Name of This Line

[edit]

According to the Metrovías website (July 2013), this line is called "Line P", not "Line E2".

It looks like this page will be in need of a major overhaul (including a name change, and a new icon)... --IJBall (talk) 20:56, 7 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It does appear from the website that the line's official designation was changed from E2 to P. However, I haven't seen any news of such a change reported anywhere, and I cannot immediately find any notice (of a change in the designation) on the operator's website. It was definitely E2 for many years (you can even see from the infobox photo that E2 was displayed on the cars, and I've visited the line myself), and in a quick Google check I can't find any photos of cars on the line displaying any route letter other than E2. If the operator changed the formal designation but has not updated any of the signage on the cars or stops, then I'm not sure the page should be moved until that inconsistency disappears (such inconsistencies are not all that unusual on Latin America transit systems). Wikipedia policy is to use the common name of things, not necessarily the official name. As it stands currently, this article is based on past sources which have always referred to this line as E2 (as that was correct at the time). Those sources were not cited (they should have been), but they certainly exist, and I'll try to add some when I have time. SJ Morg (talk) 01:58, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've now added several references to the article (and made some corrections). The E2 vs. P issue remains unresolved at this point, as I don't have any sources reporting that change, but at least the article is no longer unreferenced. SJ Morg (talk) 08:59, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Revisiting

[edit]

OK, revisiting this topic again, after a year and a half. I really think by now that this page does need to be moved to PreMetro P (Buenos Aires), as nowhere does the operator Metrovías' website still refer to this line as "E2". The only reference to "E2" seems to be the out-of-date map that accompanies this article. But the up-to-date Metrovías map (see here) indicates the line as "P".

So, I'll ask again – is there any objection to moving this article to "PreMetro P (Buenos Aires)" at this time? --IJBall (talk) 22:53, 18 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think we still don't have enough information to make an informed decision about a new title. It does appear that the line's designation was changed, but the subject remains unclear. Can you cite even one prose-text source – newspaper article, magazine, book – that refers to this line as P? I cannot find one, and all you have provided are a link to one map and one graphic, nothing in sentence form. Every single photograph I've seen of vehicles on this line shows "E2" in the signbox, but they probably are just out of date. A brief page about the line on the official City of Buenos Aires website refers to it only as line "Premetro E2", no mention of P. If the title of this article is changed, it should probably be "Premetro Line P (Buenos Aires)", considering the absence of evidence of anyone but bloggers referring to it as "PreMetro P" or "Premetro P", but I think more time needs to be spent trying to find out what the current common name among professional writers is before adopting a new title. We simply don't know what the current common name is (in prose text), and we do know that the name commonly used by multiple sources for at least the first several years of service (many of which are cited in the article) included "E2". It's bad enough that there seems to be no information online as to when the designation was changed, but we don't even have enough information on what the common name is (beyond just "P", which is too brief for a title). The Spanish version of this article includes an (unsourced) statement that Metrovías "usually" refers to the line as Line P or the Premetro Line, but that is contrary to its official name, and that the line's official designation is still E2. I can only speak for myself, but I can't support a name change without more information. SJ Morg (talk) 08:04, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I dislike even more the thought of renaming this as "P (Buenos Aires Underground)" – a format parallel with that of the other lines in this system – because that would imply that this line is an underground/metro/subway line, like the others, which of course it is not. It is light rail (in terms of right-of-way) or tram (in terms of capacity or vehicles). SJ Morg (talk) 08:13, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Neither the Premetro line, nor the Urquiza Line (commuter rail line), are truly "part" of the Buenos Aires Underground, so their article titles should definitely not contain the words "Buenos Aires Underground" as a disambiguator. If moved, I think Premetro Line P (Buenos Aires) would be the best available choice, in my opinion. --IJBall (talk) 18:30, 20 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
