[edit]What's the standard for all of the listed tracks being "famous" posse cuts? Wikipedia demands sources for such statements. Alvis (talk) 06:22, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
History
[edit]I've removed some of the un-referenced history which seems to strongly contradict other sources.
This part seemed particularly wrong - "Posse cuts are arguably the original form of the hip hop track; in hip hop's infancy, tracks would more often than not take the form of a freestyle cypher, where one rapper would deliver a usually mostly improvised verse before passing the microphone to the next, with this repeated until all the rappers present (or, all of "the posse") had a chance to rhyme."
As cited in Freestyle rap, Kool Moe Dee in his book There's A God On The Mic says that freestyling as a form of improvisational rapping didn't even properly exist until the mid to late 80s, so it would be odd to claim here that it is part of the "original form". Jeff Chang's Can't Stop Won't Stop and the book "Yes, Yes Y'all" suggest that MCing originally developed out of DJs promoting themselves over the mic, so cyphers, and most definitely freestyle cyphers, came much later.
