Tidying up the article

[edit]

Looking at the editing history of this article, it appears very likely that much of the content has been contributed by people directly involved with the business. From this edit, for instance, by User:Poldark Mine in 2007, right up to the last month's series of edits by 81.157.200.150 and 81.157.28.161.

While anyone is welcome to contribute to this encyclopedia, we do have rules intended to ensure that the content remains properly encyclopedic and does not stray into bias or advertising. I invite potential contributors to familiarise themselves with (1) our core content policies and (2) our policy on conflict of interest – which is helpfully summarized in the page: Best practices for editors with close associations – and to take these policies into account when further editing this (or any other) article.

I've edited the article to remove some of the worst bias and to start its transition to a more suitable format – our guide on writing better articles refers.  —SMALLJIM  15:31, 16 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have endeavoured to add factual information based on evidence to hand at the mining museum and from the publications mentioned. There was no bias and no advertising but a desire to be informative and provide in depth detail. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.52.129.234 (talk) 08:05, 17 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. You have added much interesting detail about the property, for which thanks. But every editor has to contribute subject to this project's own terms – its policies and guidelines. I provided links to the most relevant of them above: have you read them? Your latest edit indicates that you haven't "got it" yet!
Wikipedia isn't like TripAdvisor where what you write is based upon your own experiences. All our content has to be verifiable, our articles should be primarily based upon reliable third-party sources, and we cannot include personal experience and unpublished information from others. I've removed your latest edit because it doesn't comply with any of these rules.
Please do spend some time familiarising yourself with our rules before you edit again. In the meantime I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have.  —SMALLJIM  11:16, 17 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
As the current custodian and owner, I have access to all pertinent information and have provided accurate details that may be verified from a wide variety of sources. Some of the sources quoted by others (?) are not in fact an accurate statement of the real position. For instance the last owners ran the place into the ground and sold off many items donated to the museum or collected by its founder, the late Peter Young. For example there are currently items from the museum for sale in an auction house in Truro (24/4/2015) that are depicted and accurately recorded in the mine museum guide book, the items were taken from here by the former director claiming these to be privately owned and yet the funds for their acquisition came from the museum sales. The archive of historic images was taken and the offices and museum ransacked. With the threat of police involvement three computers and some paper records were returned, however much remains "missing" . Many other items donated to the museum were sold off in a similar fashion, in 1999/2000 this amounted to an approximate sum of £200,000, just one of the more noticeable sales was on EBAY when an entire 95 year old historic railway locomotive was sold for circa £6000 - I have since managed to have it returned to the museum (Oct 2014) at some personal expense, the reward has been from many visitors and local people who told me personally that they were delighted. We have copies of the relative papers in our records here at Poldark Tin Mine and Rural Open Air Museum including copy invoices for the 1999 circa £200,000 sale of the machinery from the collection. I hope this serves to provide you with an insight to my peculiar position. I regret that my words are not couched in the same way as you might desire for your excellent pages but I have done my personal utmost to be as accurate as is humanly possible. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.178.49.75 (talkcontribs)
Thanks for admitting your identity! I note your comments and that you are upset at the previous owners of the property. I hope you now understand that such information cannot be included in the article unless it has been published by reliable independent sources and even if it has, it must only take up a proportionate (i.e. small) part of the article – see WP:BALASPS and WP:RECENT.  —SMALLJIM  15:31, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your reply. I note your comment re "admission" but I was not aware that my ID was being kept private which was not my intention, save that I do not wish to appear to be seen as anything other than the present custodian and do not seek any self-praise for in the attempt to rescue this historic place from the scrapman and housing developers. Considerable outrage about the former owners is expressed to us on an almost daily basis without any prompting from us, to appear to praise such owners is not only misleading and improper but an affront to many of the museum's visitors and supporters. These people, a number of whom gave their time as volunteers or presented items to the museum, include the family of the late Peter Young who collected the core items many of which were sold off piecemeal or were merely allowed to rot, are largely all of the same view. Only yesterday many items from the museum here were sold at a Truro auction by the last owner - actual pictures of some of these items are in our guide book. The brazen claim is that these items were owned personally and yet were paid for by funds obtained by selling off the other contents of the museum! This appears to many of us to be nothing more than a kind of museum money laundering! We also appreciate that these facts are only a small part of the overall picture but at the same time ought to be reported truthfully as part of the story line which is what I have tried to do. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.178.49.75 (talk) 10:15, 25 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If you intend to edit Wikipedia in the future I encourage you to create an account in accordance with our username policy. However, as present custodian of this property, you (and your employees/colleagues) should only edit this article directly in certain circumstances - per the advice in the conflict of interest policy - and you must ensure that you do not make any other edits that would appear to promote or advertise the place. You're welcome to propose changes to this article on this page; another editor will make them to the article if appropriate. We're very strict on this, because we do get many many people trying to use Wikipedia for advertising.
Now, regarding the previous owners, a brief mention sounds as if it might be appropriate for the article. If the issue has been published by any independent reliable sources (newspapers etc.) you could provide details here.  —SMALLJIM  11:51, 25 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
