Observation by Rae C Wright
[edit]Sotto Torre is a bay off the island of Sant'Antioco (which is connected by a land-bridge to the Island of Sardegna) located in the Mediterranean Sea. The bay is approximately 300 yards by 300 yards and it's sand beach and waters are enjoyed by bathers during the summer months. I have observed the life in the bay for the previous 5 years for a period of three months in June, July, and August. I observed between 21 and 28 individual pinna nobilis living in the bay in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. In 2019 an intensive search found not one living pinna nobilis, and a single broken shell on the sea bottom.79.52.84.151 (talk) 17:05, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
Disease origin
[edit]The cause of the disease causing mass mortalities of Pinna nobilis is still uncertain. First it was thought that Haplosporidium pinnae infection was the origin but recently a newly discovered picornavirus has entered the ecuation. This virus probably immunosuppresses the individuals letting H. pinnae and other pathogens to infect them. So, in the end, it would be a multifactorial disease.

A widespread picornavirus affects the hemocytes of the noble pen shell (Pinna nobilis), leading to its immunosuppression.
