Franco and Hitler
[edit]Franco and Hitler never met in this island. They did meet in Hendaye in 1940, but they didn't leave the train station 80.35.98.36 21:54, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Spelling of 'pheasants' in Spanish
[edit]I've treble-checked this and it changed back it to 'Isla de los Faisanes', having changed it in the first place (source: babelfish.altavista.com and every other English-Spanish online translator). of course, I should have checked before I changed it in the first place!
Should it have a capital 'F'?
Owner
[edit]Does any private citizen have ownership rights to this island?
- it’s a State condominium — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:8440:530A:C7B5:20CD:440:42E2:B4DF (talk) 02:56, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
"No visitors are allowed on the island."
[edit]Why on earth not? The source doesn't say. Kelisi (talk) 06:35, 21 April 2014 (UTC)
- The island has a BENCH on it, is this for ghosts? We demand answers! 23.240.131.64 (talk) 19:15, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
- The sentence should be removed. Sources just state that the island is "inaccessible" or "cannot be visited", but this doesn't necessarily mean that it is forbidden. It may just mean that there is no bridge or ferry for visitors.--Pere prlpz (talk) 16:57, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- Perhaps an enquiry to the Hendaye Tourism Office might clarify the situation ? RGCorris (talk) 17:04, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- Maybe, but meanwhile the sentence should be removed.--Pere prlpz (talk) 12:37, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

Exact moment of ownership transfer with time zone differences
[edit]While this isn't an issue today. I'm curious if there's any information regarding how time zone differences was handled, and/or should be handled as part of the agreement.
While France and Spain has used the same time zones for a long time, they haven't always. One example is 1940 where France was +2 and Spain was +1. If the island was transferred over at the moment Spain reaches 31 July 24:00, then France will take possession at 1 August 01:00. Similarly in 1941, if the island was transferred over when France reaches 31 December 24:00, then Spain would gain it back on 31 December 23:00.
Since EU plans on removing summer time, and countries are free to re-adjust their offset. It is actually possible that Spain goes with +0 and France with +1, making this difference occur once more.
So this isn't that much important of a detail outside of technicalities, since the island has no residents. But it would be fun getting to know who really owned the island at both 1940-08-01 00:30 UTC and 1940-12-31 23:30 UTC.

- It seems that the jurisdiction (but not ownership) handovers take place during the day (not at night), which would solve the issue you raised?
Meta: Automation of current ownership?
[edit]Is it possible to automate the current ownership status so that in the info-box, the current owner is always listed first and with the note "(current)"? If so, could somebody please integrate that? I hope I didn't accidentally destroy any existing automation with my recent edit to this page. --BigKartenhaus (talk) 15:45, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hopefully done: It is a matter of simply adding "1" to the field key of the inactive country (e.g.
country = *
vscountry1 = *
, so I had the infobox automate the addition and removal of the "1". --Minoa (talk) 01:26, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
- The ownership doesn’t change (it remains a State condominium): only the jurisdiction will actually alternately be French or Spanish. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:8440:530A:C7B5:20CD:440:42E2:B4DF (talk) 03:00, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
Name
[edit]In the Tim Traveller video linked at the bottom, he mentions that no pheasants live on the island and that the name is something of a mistranslation. He doesn't give any more info, however. Is more known about the source of the name Pheasant Island? —Mahāgaja · talk 12:22, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Mahagaja: I have added some information. The Spanish El Diario says:
- Aunque hay aves en la zona del Bidasoa, hay todo tipo de teorías como la que apunta a que es una mala traducción de otra palabra en francés más vinculada al “paso” o peaje que se cobraba para cruzar.

Reference needed regarding department, region, province and autonomous community…
[edit]As per the infobox as of today:
Quote
Administration
France
Region - Nouvelle-Aquitaine
Département - Pyrénées-Atlantiques
Spain
Autonomous community - Basque Country
Province - Guipuscoa
Unquote
How accurate is that and what references could source it?
The French viceroy does not seem to report to the Préfet(e) du département des Pyrénées Atlantiques / Préfet(e) régional(e) de Nouvelle Aquitaine.
What about the Spanish viceroy?
X. M. L.
- The island is definitely not part of Pyrénées Atlantiques or Nouvelle Aquitaine.
- Reference is required for the Spanish autonomous community / province, as is…?
- (It seems that the island actually is a territory on its own)
