is this article necessary?

this article seems a bit ridiculous and I'm not sure it should stay. Calling phablets a class of device with only reviewers acknowledging their existence makes the term less of a real thing and more of a slang term. Companies and users do not use this word. Also, drawing a firm line on their size it ridiculous, as they are not a standard thing, but a concept. just saying... lukemags (talk) 05:06, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

iPhone 6 PLUS

Apple's released on September 9th their first phablet at size 5.5 inch. Anyone wants to write it on the article in detail?

Verizon Hub is not a phablet

It does not have capability to make calls using a voice network, it only supports VOIP. If this qualifies as a phablet then so does every Android tablet on the market. -FoxMajik (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 21:40, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

IPA pronunciation

Who wrote the phonetic pronunciation guide for the word "phablet"? I do not claim great knowledge of IPA but that appears to me to say /fab-lay/, akin to "chalet". This is wrong. It is /fab-let/ - the leading "f" sound from "phone" and the remainder from "tablet". Liam Proven (talk) 09:32, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Trademark

I removed the following sentences:

The South Korean company LG Electronics applied for a trademark of the term Phablet on 26 October 2011, according to Trademarkia.[citation needed] The current status[when?] of that application is Non-Final Action – Mailed.[citation needed]

They appear to be out of date according to the website trademarkia.com. Searching for Phablet shows that one of LG's application is now classified as ABANDONED-FAILURE TO RESPOND OR LATE RESPONSE. There's another LG application, and also one from Cyber Acoustics, which are classified as NON-FINAL ACTION - MAILED. If someone wants to sort this out it can go back in the article.Jess (talk) 15:55, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

Seven-inch barrier (not meant to be as suggestive as that sounds)

Someone -- probably rightly -- has added "citation needed" to my sentence: "The Asus FonePad, with its seven-inch screen, is remarkable for its having broken through the 6.9-inch diagonal screen measure barrier which has traditionally separated phablets from true tablets."

That's fine, but I call ironic attention to the very first sentence of the article, itself, to wit: "A phablet is a smartphone class featuring screen sizes from 5.0 to 6.9 inches, designed to combine or straddle the functionalities of a smartphone and tablet, eliminating the need for two devices."

And the citation for that is the article's very first: Newman, Jared (April 2, 2013). "Phablets Are a Niche, Not a Fad". Time.

One could say, then, that my sentence is referenced in the article, itself; supported by an actual reference. But I concede that we probably need to do it better; and so I am not contesting that my sentence has "citation needed" next to it. I remember reading it on... hmm... I think it was GSM ARENA, but I'll have to hunt it down. I also haven't read the Jared Newman (TIME) piece, which may very well state it, hence the reason it's the reference for what is the definition of a phablet. But I don't have time to figure it out right this minute. Patience, please.

Phonelet

Perhaps it should be added that it is sometimes also called Phonelet: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=phonelet --Fluffystar (talk) 13:14, 25 January 2014 (UTC)

I've never heard it called that. Could you perhaps find a more reliable source with such name, so it may be inserted in the article? Piguy101 (talk) 16:09, 20 April 2014 (UTC)
Also TabPhone. I wasn't even aware of the Phablet term's popularity before today, I thought everyone used TabPhone. •ː• 3ICE •ː• 10:31, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

Why was it moved from 5.0" to 5.25"?

I remember it was always that phablets are from 5" inches to 6.99". Just because LG and Samsung made made their flagship phones over 5 inches doesn't mean we should change the rule. The rules should be fixed so they measure to it, not the other way around. If it's push on both sides than it's pointless having rules in the first place. It must be brought back to 5 inches. Luka Mlinar

It should be 5.3 inches and higher the size of the original galaxy note. Devices like the moto x 2014 with 5.2 inch screen should be removed from this page as it not a classified phablet Leitrim 1997 (talk) 14:07, 27 March 2016 (UTC)

a photo of a person holding a phablet to his/her ear?

hello, i wrote the german article about the phablet a couple of months ago and am still searching for a good photo showing a person actually phoning with a phablet. since this is the key feature which separates the phablet from the tablet, it would be good to have. i don't own a phablet, but maybe some of the authors here does? the community and wiki commons would appreciate it. thanks, Maximilian (talk) 17:50, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

How about this? Rwxrwxrwx (talk) 18:18, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
excellent! thanks! Maximilian (talk) 21:05, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

Article is a Point of View.

As far as anyone can tell "phablet" is just a meme created by tech bloggers and not in professional use by carriers or manufacturers. This does not even reflect public opinion and even if it did it would still be a point of view and should state this accordingly.

All of the sources are tertiary links to tech blogs and tech media sites and there are no references to any standards bodies, manufacturers or carriers calling or "classing" their devices as a phablet or stating what method is actually used to class a devices as a "phablet" or a "smartphone". A tech blogger inventing/"coining" a word does not instantly reward it with a wikipedia page. Furthermore the sources are most likely just being used to boost SEO rankings of those sites.

There is no clear difference between the devices listed here and the smartphone article. Some users will have different hand sizes so may be able to use larger devices with one hand more comfortably that other users. The definition (as written in the article here) of a "phablet" based on screen size has changed over time reflecting the controversiality of the article. There would need to be a very clear distinction of how a "phablet" differs from a "smartphone" if this article were to remain. Also there would have to be citation of the word in use by a primary source.

Personally I think the name "phablet" is ridiculous and just shows how far the tech blog mob have taken over. If the device is not intended to be held to the ear then it is clearly not a phone. But if the device is meant to be held to the ear then I am sorry but it is still a "smartphone".

As far as I can tell the term "phablet" if used for a Galaxy Note is just referring to a PDA, which already has an article. The devices primary function is a PDA/Computer not phone.

No the PDA did not die, the O2 XDA series was a "PDA phone" Pocket PC way before the word "smartphone" article was even in widespread use. That overtime evolved into Window 10 Mobile. The apple newton (also a PDA) became the iPhone, etc. The history of both these devices is a PDA phone. A smartphone is just a PDA with an LTE modem whose primary function is phonecalls. It is still a subset of PDA.

The difference is "smartphone" actually makes sense and easily translatable into other languages. "Phablet" is a stupid name plain and simple.

When does it stop, do we create a name for phones less than 4"? Then what happens with tablets that have LTE modems and can receive incoming calls? Or what about when "smartwatches" can have their own LTE modems? Phatches?

In my opinion this article should just redirect to smartphone, PDA or be removed completely. As it is clearly just a word invented by the media. (8739ccc (talk) 06:43, 9 December 2015 (UTC))

If something was "invented" by the media, then that means there is proof there needs to be an article. This article is fine. --Frmorrison (talk) 14:31, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

Devices smaller than 5.3 inches

Devices like the moto x 2014 should not be on this list as it is not a phablet. Only devices 5.3 inches to 6.9 inches should be included (the size of the original galaxy note). Any other device that is listed outside of this should be removed from the page as it is not a phablet Leitrim 1997 (talk) 14:09, 27 March 2016 (UTC)
