The Perkin-Elmer article could be improved by bringing it into line with its relationship with NASA and the history of the Hubble Telescope. [1]

I would like to see the article improved, by adding in the various companies it bought or merged with over time. Wjhonson 16:33, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising, the current opening statement is an objective description of the company. The version you propose is overly promotional, does not come close to abiding by the Policy on Neutral Point of View, and may be a case of Conflict of Interest. Labsupply co

[edit]

Ok, not directly related - but it's a question that's been annoying me for quite a while. Does anyone know why those Labsupply companies (almost) never show the price for their articles on their webpages??Lukas 07:52, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Computer company

[edit]

Perkin-Elmer was involved in computer manufacture (or perhaps re-badging) for a time. I used a Perkin-Elmer 3210 minicomputer, running some version of Unix, in 1984. Mr Barndoor 15:45, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Perkin-Elmer Computer Systems Division was formed through the purchase of Interdata, Inc. (an independent computer manufacturer) in 1974. They were a major supplier of 16-bit and 32-bit mega-mini computers (the Alaska pipeline, banks, NASA, etc.) until about 1989, when they sold the division (Concurrent Computer Corporation) to Massachusetts Computer Corporation, which was later bought by Harris Corporation of Melbourne, Florida. The 32-bit computers were very similar to an IBM System/370, but ran the OS/32MT operating system. Another company did port a version of Unix for the Perkin-Elmer machines. I know this because I worked in the Perkin-Elmer Computer Systems Division, Product Support and Test Departments from October 1973 to June 1984. The Wollongong Group provided the commercial version of the Unix port to the Interdata 7/32 hardware, known as Edition 7 Unix. The port was orignally done by the University of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, and was the first UNIX port to hardware other than the Digital Equipment Corporation PDP family, according to the University of Wollongong article.
In 1982 I used the Wollongong Group Edition 7 Unix and Programmer's Workbench (PWB) on a Perkin-Elmer 3240 at a Hughes Aircraft Company software development computer center in Fullerton, CA. [16:11, March 31, 2015‎ MarkCPhinn]
I've tried to briefly add some of this to the article. Wikipedia has some really large holes in places when it comes to the history of pre-Internet computing companies. Wasted Time R (talk) 11:32, 28 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

PerkinElmer Wikipedia Page: Suggestions for Changes

[edit]

This is Jennifer Werner from PerkinElmer. A group of us have been looking over this entry and saw that some items were out-of-date. We respect that it is improper for any of us to make these edits to the entry ourselves. So we hope you’ll consider these suggestions in the spirit intended—to improve the overall quality of this entry based on objective data. I figure this is the easiest way to outline the out-of-date items in order:

Misc: Correction: the word ‘formally’ is misspelled in the ‘History’ section. —Preceding unsigned comment added by JVWerner (talkcontribs) 17:30, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I incorporated these updates. The only one I skipped was "formally" because it's not clear to me (without spending more time) where this correction is meant. Thank you for supplying these reasonable suggestions with respectable supporting links. — ¾-10 02:55, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions for changes to PerkinElmer entry

[edit]

This is Jennifer Werner from PerkinElmer. Thank you for the recent updates. While the Summary Box is now current with PerkinElmer’s industries and products, the intro copy still references Optoelectronics and Fluid Sciences, which are no longer how that part of our business is defined.

The current text states: “PerkinElmer, Inc. (NYSE: PKI) is an American multinational technology corporation, focused in the business areas of: Life and Analytical Sciences, Optoelectronics, and Fluid Sciences. PerkinElmer's Life and Analytical Sciences division engineers and manufactures drug research and development tools, chemical, environmental, food and consumer product monitoring instruments, medical imaging devices, genetic screening tools and software for cellular imaging & analysis. Their Optoelectronics division designs and builds digital imaging and specialty lighting equipment.”

We suggest the following: “PerkinElmer, Inc. (NYSE: PKI) is an American multinational technology corporation, focused in the business areas of human and environmental health, including Environmental Analysis, Food and Consumer Product Safety, Medical Imaging, Drug Discovery, Diagnostics, Biotechnology, Industrial Applications and Life Science Research. I would like to learn more about the history of the PerkinElmer Environmental Analysis business (and products) and how that results in instruments for end markets (particularly in governments seeking to gather environmental data for decisionmaking). Update for Wikipedians: I never did incorporate this batch of updates yet, because it was going to require some time and effort which didn't make the bar of my to-do triage. I think it would be good to incorporate these updates to whatever extent they are NPOV (I didn't scrutinize details yet). I'll plan on knocking this out sometime if no one beats me to it. I also feel that PerkinElmer is justified in editing the WP article about them, but I realize the large COI potential and that plenty of other Wikipedians would probably scream shrilly about it. I don't have the answer to that other than to kick the can down the road and say that the conversation about corporations and institutions editing the WP articles about them will need to continue, and in my opinion it has some value (because it supplies person-hours of "usually pretty decent" content building, which are a scarce resource that has value to our volunteer project), as long as the users always clearly identify themselves and don't try to own the article in any way. (An example of how to do it responsibly is seen here on this page.) Besides which, we shouldn't kid ourselves: corporations are going to edit one way or another—either via aboveboard channels (if we provide such), or via stealthier means (if we don't). Some Wikipedians would tell me I'm treading a slippery slope with this thinking (opening Pandora's box? Playing with fire? Insert metaphor here), but it turns out that all of life is lived on a slippery slope. The trick to success is finessing and managing the balance and footing.
