Does anyone know where I might find Dr. Allen's essay, "The Patriarchalization of Native American Tribes?" Thanks, Slrubenstein | Talk 16:40, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Enrolled with the Laguna Pueblo?

[edit]

User:CorbieVreccan I have doubts that Allen (and her siblings Lee Francis and Carol Lee Sanchez) was enrolled with the Laguna Pueblo. The Laguna Pueblo has a blood quantum requirement of "one-eighth (1/8) or more Laguna blood AND must have a combined total Indian blood equaling one-half (1/2) from a federally recognized tribe(s)." The article says that she "identified with" the Laguna Pueblo, but doesn't say if she was a member. If her father was Lebanese and her mother was mixed Native and white, then she couldn't meet the requirement. That would make her a descendant. This book says her great-grandmother was Laguna and her grandmother was half Laguna. As I was writing this I saw that she is listed in "Unpapered" as a non-enrolled Native descendant. EDIT - my mistake, those are the naturalization requirements. The blood quantum for regular membership is one-quarter Laguna. Either way, she's still not enrolled. I've wondered about her as well. Thank you for looking this up. I agree, none of those sources indicate she should be listed as enrolled. Unless something better turns up (and at this date I doubt it will), we can't list as a citizen or simply "Laguna Pueblo". At best she could be called a descendant... but only if we're certain about the mother and grandmother. Are we certain? I have to admit I've had doubts about her community/cultural connections as on the one hand, some Natives did seem to accept her, but on the other hand she also collaborated with some rather harmful frauds and exploiters. - CorbieVreccan 20:58, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@CorbieVreccan I think she was a legitimate descendant, just not enrolled. The great-grandmother Meta Gunn Atsye was listed as Laguna on an early 1900s census. The Carlisle Indian School has a photo of Meta Atsye. Bohemian Baltimore (talk) 08:36, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's proof of being a descendant. Yes, she can be called a descendant. - CorbieVreccan 19:00, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
