Requested move 5 December 2016

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: not moved. In the absence of any convincing data to the contrary, the established convention for romanization should be used. What the subject of the article uses on their personal website is not terribly relevant, as we depend on secondary sources. There is no consensus for a move at this point. Park Myeong-suPark Myung-soo – 1. Popular usage. The search result of Park Myung-soo -wikipedia is 1,110,000, compared to Park Myeong-su -wikipedia which gives 263,000 results. A search for "Park Myung-soo" -wikipedia with quotation marks gives 388,000 results, where "Park Myeong-su" -wikipedia gives 58,500 results. A search for Infinite Challenge Park -wikipedia also gives Myung Soo or Myung-soo as the popular usage. 2. Myung-soo with only the first syllable capitalized is selected by WP:NC-KO#Given name. It is also how the wikipedia page for Myung-soo as a Korean given name is spelled. Autokiij (talk) 09:28, 5 December 2016 (UTC) --Relisting.  — Amakuru (talk) 11:01, 13 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. Web hits are meaningless. If you put in quotes and take the search engine results to the last page, it's 127 hits for Park Myeong-soo, 165 for Park Myeong-su. Your mileage will vary depending on whether you use quote marks, time of day, etc. It's different each time I do it. If you look at the reference section, it's three and three. He is not famous enough to have an English-language common name. We should use systematic Revised Romanization. Pandas and people (talk) 17:35, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Pandas and people: Reply to opposing argument: Then how about English-language media covering Korean entertainment? A google news search for Park Myung-soo sorted by date, gives me several news stories on 'Park Myung-soo' from this month alone (Picture Link), whereas a google news search for Park Myeong-su sorted by date, gives me one article since march. (Picture Link). Maybe we shouldn't lend to much credence to web hits, but there is a noticeable difference there. Using the search on several sources that writes about Korean entertainment regularly shows me that Korea JoongAng Daily, Soompi, The Korea Times (who previously used Myeong-su), Allkpop all use Park Myung-soo or Park Myung Soo. There is also an article on International Business Times using Park Myung Soo. The Korea Herald and BNT News uses Park Myeong-su. There might be others for both lists, if so, let me know.

Personal usage for 'Park Myung-soo': Park Myung-soo's wife, Han Su-min uses the 'Park Myung-soo' spelling repeatedly on her instagram account. The account is not verified, but in addition to the numerous private pictures, their occasional interaction on Instagram, the fact that her account, and pictures from her account has been showed on TV episodes of Infinite Challenge on more than one occasion proves its authenticity. Soompi among other sites have also linked her account.

Also, greatpark.co.kr/, Park Myung-soo's website uses the 'Park Myung-soo' spelling. You'll also find that where some of his older music releases used Myeong-soo (Fyah, 2010) on the cover. Newer releases such as You're My Girl (2013), and Tarzan (2016) spells his name 'Park Myung-soo' on the cover. (One example here) Autokiij (talk) 00:37, 6 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Park Myeong-suPark Myung-sooThis news article contains a photo of his passport, on which his name is clearly spelled "PARK, MYUNG SOO". I believe that this evidence is convincing enough to rename the article. According to Wikipedia's relevant style guide (WP:NC-KO), "PARK, MYUNG SOO" should be written as "Park Myung-soo". 173.116.174.137 (talk) 06:50, 15 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
