Cleanup

[edit]

I cleaned up the last paragraph a bit, but this article needs some major revision. Robotgoose 15:19, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Panchayat - South Asian or Indian?

[edit]

Hello. The first line of the lead mentions that this is a form of governance found in South Asia. However, I doubt if any country other than India uses it (or has ever used it). The entire article then goes on to talk about the panchayat in terms of village governance only in India. Why so? I recommend the inclusion of references to verify that it indeed is a form of government for several south Asian countries. We could then also include info regarding those countries in the article. aJCfreak yAk 11:04, 16 April 2008 (

False information

[edit]

This is certainly wrong. The Panchayati was not introduce by the British. Who ever wrote this is not familar with the Shiva Purana where two brothers gave up their kingdom to worship Shiva. They said to the people to select 5 people from their kingdom to rule. At that time there were basically 5 division of labor. The four caste and the out-caste.

Women

[edit]

There should be mention of the 1992 constitutional amendment in India that reserved 1/3 of panchayat seats for women and the subsequent effects of that change. 128.42.80.94 (talk) 21:04, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article says 50%, doesn't it? Editfromwithout (talk) 00:16, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

New text moved here

[edit]

Someone added the same bolded text twice to the article. It seemed to say much the same as other text in the article. I thought to remove it and copy here, in case there is anything substantially new and useful, that could be worked into the article.

The main aim of the Panchayati Raj has been democratic decentralization, rural self – government, and rural development.Socio-economic development of rural India has been a major goal. Panchyati Raj has been designed to encourage the people of rural areas in meeting their needs locally. It develops the habit of democratic living. It strengthens the foundations of Indian Democracy. Make villages self-governing and self-reliant units. Secure a sense to self-confidence among the rural people. It acts as a system of democratic education and training and to undertake rural development by involving the rural community. To Satisfy Local needs, promote democratic living; provide political education and training, and rural development through local efforts.

Merger of Panchayati raj into Panchayati raj (India)

[edit]

On 3 January 2017, Shi Annan proposed merging the Panchayati raj article into the Panchayati raj (India) article, but did not initiate any discussion. --Bejnar (talk) 17:23, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose merger. The Panchayati raj article was separated from the Panchayati raj (India) in 2015 because they discuss two quite different systems. The Panchayati raj article discusses the traditional system once found throughout southern Asia. The Panchayati raj (India) discusses the specific constitutional and statutory system implemented in India in 1992. As the lead in both articles state, with citation: There are significant differences between the traditional panchayati raj system, that envisioned by Gandhi, and the system formalised in India in 1992. --Bejnar (talk) 17:23, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

See current discussion at Talk:Local self-government in India#Merge discussion. --Bejnar (talk) 17:57, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
