Palmersville station was constructed for the Metro, and was opened in 1986, six years after the line through here opened. The station is on the northern half of the Tyne Coast loop.

Network Rail's Blyth and Tyne freight line shares the alignment with the Metro at this point, with a single track running behind the coastbound platform.
