Hi, I'm here on behalf of United Airlines as part of my work with Beutler Ink. As someone with a conflict of interest, I will abstain from directly editing the article and instead post requests to be reviewed and implemented by volunteers.
Currently, this article uses "Template:Infobox officeholder", which is typically for entries about politicians or political officeholders. This does not apply to Oscar Munoz, who has never run for public office. I'm requesting replacement of "Infobox officeholder" with "Template:Infobox person" which has more applicable fields for an executive.
I propose the infobox displayed to the right, which shares the same information to readers as the current infobox except removes the "Political party" field. Mr. Munoz does not discuss politics publicly and "Democratic" is currently unsourced.
Will an editor please review this request and update the infobox markup appropriately?
Thank you. Inkian Jason (talk) 18:21, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
- @AngusWOOF: Hello again. I'm curious if you'd be willing to help with this request to swap the infobox, per your recent help on the Scott Kirby draft? Thanks, Inkian Jason (talk) 19:54, 20 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Theroadislong: Hello! Since you helped with the Scott Kirby draft, are you able to review this request to switch out the infobox as well? Thanks. Inkian Jason (talk) 14:04, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

- @Theroadislong: Thanks for your (quick!) assistance. I'm submitting a request to update the Career section below, if you're willing to review another simple request to improve this page. Inkian Jason (talk) 15:37, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
Updates to Career section
[edit]This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
I am back with another request to update this Wikipedia article on behalf of United Airlines.
Mr. Munoz has served on the board of trustees at University of North Florida as well as the PAFA advisory board of Vanderbilt University. Additionally, he has received coverage for forgoing his salary during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. I propose the following two additions to the Career section:
- He has served on the board of directors for Continental Airlines, followed by United Airlines, as well as on the University of North Florida's board of trustees and the PAFA advisory board of Vanderbilt University.[1][2]
- In response to the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic, Munoz announced that he, along with president Scott Kirby, would forgo their salaries until June 30, 2020.[3]

@Theroadislong: If these additions seem appropriate to you, would you mind updating the article? I've provided specific markup and sourcing.
Thanks for your consideration, Inkian Jason (talk) 15:37, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
- Not done Being on the board of directors of a company isn't especially notable and foregoing his salary is just news, and rather promotional. Sorry. Theroadislong (talk)
- @Theroadislong: Template:Infobox person has a field for notable board positions, so I assumed adding mention of such roles was appropriate. Am I misunderstanding? Inkian Jason (talk) 15:59, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
- It's already in the lede section so I suppose it could be added to the info box. I'll let another editor review. Theroadislong (talk) 16:07, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
- The introduction is currently outdated and does not mention the University of North Florida and Vanderbilt University positions specifically. I'll try to get feedback from some other editors as well. @AngusWOOF: Would you be willing to update the Career section with these notable board positions? Inkian Jason (talk) 16:14, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

Early life and Personal life
[edit]This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
Hello again! I'm back to propose some additional improvements for community review. I've saved a draft article here: User:Inkian Jason/Oscar Munoz. I don't want to give editors too much to review at once, so for now I'd like to focus specifically on the Early life and Personal life sections, both of which are quite short.
For the Early life section, I propose replacing the current text with the text I've drafted here. The text is similar, but mentions Munoz's full birth date and the year in which he graduated from the University of Southern California. If editors believe this is an improvement, can you copy and paste over appropriately?
The current Personal life section confirms Munoz is married with children and that he had a transplant following a heart attack. The draft I've provided expands on this by also mentioning a couple philanthropic efforts, Munoz's hobbies, and a bit more context around his health and its impact on his work. Again, if editors believe this is an improvement over the existing text, please update the live page appropriately. These 2 sections use some of the same sources, hence grouping for this request.
@Atvelonis: I'm submitting this request on behalf of United Airlines. Since you helped with the Scott Kirby image request, I was wondering if you'd be willing to help here as well? Happy to address any questions or concerns. Thanks for your consideration. Inkian Jason (talk) 18:20, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
- Sure. Looks fine. I notice that the lede spells his surname both "Munoz" and "Muñoz." Which one is correct? —Atvelonis (talk) 23:15, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Atvelonis: Thanks for updating the article. "Munoz" is correct and I will be submitting additional requests to make the article consistent. In the meantime, are you willing to update the Health subsection under Personal life per User:Inkian_Jason/Oscar_Munoz#Health? Inkian Jason (talk) 14:24, 13 May 2020 (UTC)
- Done. —Atvelonis (talk) 08:18, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
Career and introduction
[edit]This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
Hi again! I am back with an additional request to improve this Wikipedia article on behalf of United Airlines. Currently the page has a lengthy introduction and a limited Career section focused primarily on the passenger removal incident. I'd like to reverse this to make the article more compliant with Wikipedia's manual of style, so I've saved a draft article here for editors to review and update the live page appropriately. Following are some issues with the current article:
- the Career section lacks a thorough background of the subject's early career (specifically his executive roles at CSX Corporation) and related accomplishments
- the passenger removal incident has been widely covered in media, so I've left the language mostly as is but tidied up for flow and readability
- United Airlines' website is used as an inline citation multiple times
- notable board roles (University of North Florida, Vanderbilt University) are not mentioned
- as noted by another editor above, "Munoz" and "Muñoz" are both used in the introduction
The Career section I've proposed provides an accurate and neutral overview of the subject's career, based on reliable third-party sourcing, and moves some detail from the introduction to the article body. To clarify, the passenger removal incident has been covered in journalistic sources. The new draft does not remove this information but does eliminate the subsection heading. The draft also adds detail about Munoz's involvement with UA's achievement of new union labor contracts, where he has been directly credited. The section has been reorganized for flow and readability, and is more robust than the current article. UA has verified accuracy.
@Atvelonis: Since you helped with the Early life and Personal life sections, would you have a moment to take a look at the draft page and update the article's Career section and introduction as well? I am not proposing any additional changes to the infobox at this time. Again, I'm happy to answer any questions.
Thanks again, Inkian Jason (talk) 14:17, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- I made a few stylistic changes, and I don't think that introducing free snacks on flights is exactly notable, so I have omitted that line. I also do not think that foregoing one's salary is worth mentioning on this article (feels like PR, and out of place with the rest of the description you provided). The rest looks good to me. —Atvelonis (talk) 22:07, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Atvelonis: Thanks for your help! Now that some leadership changes have occurred, would you be willing to update "On December 5, 2019, Munoz announced he was stepping down as CEO of United in May 2020. He will be succeeded by the current president of United, Scott Kirby, and will serve a one-year term as executive chairman of United Airlines Holdings." to "In December 2019, it was announced that Munoz will transition to the role of executive chairman of the board in May 2020. President Scott Kirby will take over the CEO role from Munoz in May 2020 at United's annual meeting." in the introduction, per this source? The tense should be corrected. Thanks again, Inkian Jason (talk) 20:11, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, I've added the information and that source. —Atvelonis (talk) 01:18, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Atvelonis: The meeting took place on the day the source was published, so "will take over" can be changed to "took over" so the tense is correct. Thanks for your continued help here! Inkian Jason (talk) 18:25, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, I've added the information and that source. —Atvelonis (talk) 01:18, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
- Whoops, fixed. —Atvelonis (talk) 18:18, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks again! Inkian Jason (talk) 14:56, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
- Whoops, fixed. —Atvelonis (talk) 18:18, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
