Arrested vs detained
[edit]I see the verbiage was changed from "arrested" to "detained". From the video, I recall Jimenez being told he was under arrest and that is the language used in most sources I've seen. Even the Twitter handle of the Minnesota State Patrol says "arrested" ([1]). Enwebb (talk) 18:49, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
Notability
[edit]Does Jimenez meet Wikipedia's notability standards? My inclination is that he is only notable for this event of his arrest, making him WP:BIO1E. I am considering bringing this article to AfD, but want to have a short discussion first. Natg 19 (talk) 04:59, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
- Natg 19, I was wondering, too. Is the emmy nom enough to push it over? —valereee (talk) 11:14, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
- IMHO...I think the arrest plus some previous coverage [2] [3] probably pushes him over the WP:BASIC threshold. TJMSmith (talk) 13:44, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
- I've nominated the article for deletion, feel free to discuss there. Natg 19 (talk) 05:16, 5 June 2020 (UTC)

Accent?
[edit]Jamez42 where are you seeing use of an accent? He doesn't appear to use one in his official website, and his CNN profile and Twitter handle similarly omit an accent. Enwebb (talk) 19:04, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
- +1...where is this? —valereee (talk) 19:13, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
- I was wondering that myself. CNN doesn't use it on-screen either. Absent consensus for this move, which should have been discussed to begin with, the addition of the accent needs to be removed and the article moved back. ----Dr.Margi ✉ 19:18, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
- Alright, in the spirit of BRD, I have reverted the move and undone the addition of é to the article. If Jamez42 wants to come back and discuss, we can see if there is consensus to use Jiménez instead of Jimenez. Enwebb (talk) 19:41, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
@Enwebb, Valereee, and Drmarg: Hi. Grave words in Spanish that don't end with an "n", "s" or a vowel are accentuated (eg: azúcar, sugar). This is also the case with several last names that end in "ez", such as González, Martínez, Fernández and, as you can imagine, Jiménez. Several sources in Spanish use the accent in the last name, including CNN in Spanish:
- Así arrestaron en vivo a Omar Jiménez, corresponsal de CNN
- Omar Jiménez, reportero de la CNN, detenido en pleno directo durante las protestas en Minneapolis
- Detienen al periodista de CNN Omar Jiménez en pleno directo en Minneapolis
For these reasons I believe that using the accent is the correct orthography, but I also understand if the majority of sources in English don't use it and said convention is kept. --Jamez42 (talk) 23:16, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
- Jamez42 in cases like these, I feel like it is at the discretion of the subject. If he used an accent in his personal website or Twitter handle, that would be one thing. But by spelling his name with an accent when he himself doesn't use one, we would effectively be conveying that he is spelling his own name wrong. Enwebb (talk) 00:03, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
- I understand, thanks! --Jamez42 (talk) 00:04, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
Second move to accented name
[edit]I've just overwritten a second move from the unaccented to accented use of Jimenez, done by a second editor who has otherwise not contributed to the page. I think it's important to recognize that Omar Jimenez is Afro-Latino and American born. It is not uncommon that American born Latinx do no use an accent in names of Spanish origin, including Jimenez. An accent should only be added if the individual uses it. ----Dr.Margi ✉ 20:59, 6 June 2020 (UTC)
