Move discussion in progress
[edit]There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Jamaica (LIRR station) which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 02:03, 1 May 2018 (UTC)
Country
[edit]I have removed the mention of the country from the lead. This seems unnecessary to me as I feel like most people will have a passing knowledge of what country New York is in. If they do not, then there are several wikilinks in the very first sentence of the page. Besides, desktop users will not even have to leave the page, since the preview pop-up for the NY article literally says that its a US state. Epicgenius (talk) 16:39, 7 May 2024 (UTC)
- I agree that mentioning the US explicitly is unnecessary and it's safe to assume passing knowledge of where the state of New York is. I'd even say it would impede readability to name the US explicitly in every article about a location somewhere in the US; in the lead of this article, "town, county, state, country" would be a mouthful. - The county isn’t necessary in my opinion, it’s certainly not necessary for locations in Canada to mention the district of every town. Many UK location articles don’t mention counties, either.
- Most location articles mention their country, there’s no reason to exclude American locations unless they are in one of the places well known around the world. 2A00:23C5:289F:5601:B514:9552:46BC:F04 (talk) 19:09, 7 May 2024 (UTC)
- I agree regarding the county. Many LIRR stations, or other railroad stations for that matter, don't typically mention the county, just the town/village/city that they are in.Regarding the country, though, I think NY is one of these locations that's well known worldwide. If someone doesn't know about NY, which I don't think is likely, they could click on the link to the NY article. I don't think this is a situation where non-locals are likely completely unfamiliar with NY. Epicgenius (talk) 20:07, 7 May 2024 (UTC)
