Newfie stamps

FYI, on removal of link about newfie stamps--the newfie stamps themselves are interesting, but I, too, object to the fact that they are surrounded on all sides by commercial links. WP in general tries to avoid having links to commercial pages unless it's, for example, the home page of the company that the article is about. Elf | Talk 04:21, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

newfoundland-puppy-dogs.com

I've reverted this link for the 5th time since the first warning - to the user who keeps posting the site, i would ask that you stop, as it it is a violation of the External links guideline and wikipedia policies, thanks. - Trysha (talk) 19:47, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

I agree, the site is heavy on advertising, this site keeps being readded, unfortunately by different IPs. I believe it should stay that way unless consensus is reached otherwise. Alf melmac 19:52, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
I don't have strong feelings on it. The feelings I have, I expressed in my edit comment. Yeah, it's goofy and amateurish site and, yeah, I assume the anon who keeps adding the link is the person who runs the site and is trying to promote it. But I don't think it's typical linkspam and it's borderline-interesting. For one thing, the site is not, at least not at the moment, trying to sell anything directly. I'm sure he's trying to build traffic so he can convince people to put their ads on it, but that's not quite the same.
I'm sure you won't agree but if nothing else I'd think the page http://www.newfoundland-puppy-dogs.com/collecting-stamps.html is worthy of being linked, unless someone knows of a better site with similar content.
Just my $0.02. I'm not connected to the site in any way, BTW. But I plan to tell my wife about it, because I think she'll enjoy the site... Dpbsmith (talk) 21:15, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
I don't see any problems with that site whatsoever. It's much more informative to a layman than many other breed-specific sites, and beyond the homepage, there's no advertising at all. (UTC)

Who put they eat children in the intro? I took it out as no links were provided and it was obviously just a troll.

History error

can someone check the history. By 1880 the lab had been imported to the UK for almost 100 years. So the statement that these dogs were found in 1880 is not accurate. Please crossref history and sources on labrador retriever for more. Some of the info there may be useful here. FT2 (Talk | email) 19:35, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned references in Newfoundland (dog)

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Newfoundland (dog)'s orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "CKC":

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 07:46, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Any one going to mention it? http://news.yahoo.com/nphotos/Great-Dane-Guinness-World-Records/photo//091007/480/814d5aa343ab46929db3bfedd0bde5e3//s:/ap/20091008/ap_on_fe_st/us_odd_biggest_dog —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.32.68.134 (talk) 22:23, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

images

I removed the puppy image as it was improperly stamped with a link/credit and I removed the "female" image as the dog has an appearance that does not generally differ in regards to sex and it was a poor image. There was also a general crowding and stacking of images discouraged by WP:IMAGES and WP:IUP. VanTucky (talk) 18:42, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Someone should replace the main picture. Others may not have noticed, but it has an erection. I'm sure that's not the aim of whoever placed the picture on this page! :) Violet 23-April-2008 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 218.214.143.127 (talk) 01:04, 23 April 2008 (UTC) the peter pan dog was not a newfoundland it is a st. bernard!

Famous Newfoundlands

Re: "Canton and Sailor - A female and male pup aboard a foundering British ship in Maryland that were bred with retrievers to form the Chesapeake Bay Retriever"

Does this really have a place here? Canton and Sailor were what was then called "Lesser Newfoundland" Dogs, or St. John's Water Dogs. At the time, the large breed were known as the "Greater Newfoundland." JoKing (talk) 00:01, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

I'd like to suggest that fictional dogs be separated from real dogs on this list. Perhaps another section or subsection on Famous fictional Newfoundlands. JoKing (talk) 15:59, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

Bouncer. (I have additional citations of illustrations etc of Bouncer if you would like to see them.) Suggested addition, * Bouncer: The children of Newfoundland presented Bouncer and a specially commissioned dog-cart to the Duke & Duchess of Cornwall and York (George V) during their royal visit to the colony in 1901[1] Sable Chief, bred from Bouncer, was presented as mascot to the Newfoundland Regiment before leaving on the S.S. Florizel heading into WW1.[2] Klossoke (talk)klossoke

quotes

I added a quotes section, I thought it would be fun, and shed some more light on the breed. If you know/can find anymore quotes add them there. ABart26 09:04, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Fictional Noofs

Much as i like the idea of Sirius Black being a noof, I can assure you the only Newfoundland who is called Sirius is my own dog. The dog seen in the movie was a generic big black dog with more in common with an Irish Wolfhound in terms of appearance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.40.204.123 (talk) 00:23, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

shedding

we have a newfie/lab mix female, she very much looks more like a newfie than a lab. my question is in respect to shedding, is it exsesive, i understand they will shed, but.,...our dog seems like she's shedding too much. i tried looking it up and found nothing, so any comment on the "shedding" aspect would be very helping. her name is JYNX and she's 2yrs old, thanks for your help or comments. michelle marion, lincoln, nh. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 76.178.205.86 (talk)

I can tell you that shedding is very common for Newfies. My parents have three Newfs and they have fur everywhere - it ends up in food, on your clothes, on 'clean' linen, it even ends up back at my place after a visit to see my parents! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.167.87.112 (talk) 02:02, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

Really badly not NPOV

This article is a bit ridiculous. I know it's written mostly by people who have Newfoundlands, but there's just no need for a picture of "8-year-old 'Brandon.'" I have a Newf, and I love him and the breed to bits, but I'm not going to upload a photo of "2-year-old 'Siegfried'" because that's just not what Wikipedia is for.

It's also not for singing the praises of things. The temperament section needs a complete do-over; the only valid, impartial bit of information in it is that most kennel clubs will describe the dogs as 'sweet.'

The 'Famous Newfoundlands' section should really only have Boatswain, Brumus and Seaman on it, if it's going to exist at all, because the rest of them really aren't famous in the slightest. They're just random Newfs that people have owned. Winning the Westminster Dog show doesn't make an animal famous outside of some very small circles. And the only famous fictional Newf of any note is Nana. Really, neither of those sections are necessary.

On top of that, the History section, while not atrociously biased, is in desperate need of citations, and why the hell does the "Quotations" section even exist?

Basically all this article is is a bunch of sycophantic nonsense about how great Newfoundlands are, and it frankly makes the people who own them look like idiots. There's plenty of legitimate, interesting information out there on Newfoundlands (how about something in the health section about their propensity for skin disorders?) and there's no need for this much opinion in an article. I'd think a good half of it can just be deleted, and the rest needs to be rewritten by someone who knows about both Newfs and informative writing. I really don't know why it's rated a B on the quality scale for dog articles, because I think it's well up there with some of the least encyclopaedic articles of any size on Wikipedia.

Not Encyclopedic

This article is written like a grade school student telling their friend about a new puppy; the "you's" are in poor choice. Overall, I'd say this article could use a bit of a re-write. 64.246.144.52 23:56, 14 July 2007 (UTC)MaytrixInk

Agreed - the temperament section in particular reads like a craigslist ad trying to sell the dog. Way too over the top, needs at least a minor rewrite. Cophus (talk) 18:14, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

If there is to be a rewrite, perhaps the following could be improved and made a little more credible: "They are incredibly loyal and make incredible working dogs." Dawright12 (talk) 07:45, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Redirect from "Nanny dog"

You removed the phrase Nanny dog and created a redirect for it to Pit Bull. I don't think this is well thought out. This is a new invention, without long standing WP:RS and has been convincingly been debunked. King, C. (8.04.2010). "The Nanny Dog Myth Revealed The Truth About Pit Bulls". Retrieved October 27, 2012. {{cite web}}: Check date values in: |date= (help) As the website convincingly demonstrates, Pit Bulls are no "nanny dog". 7&6=thirteen () 15:06, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Nanny dog

As you probably know a nanny is one you can leave small children alone with, who will take care of them. This is a terrible thing to call a dog as it is a very bad idea to leave a child in the care of any dog. I've been working on Fatal dog attacks in the United States and have seen case after horrific case of a small child left alone with a dog and ending up dead, and reason dictates that there must be more such cases where the child was not killed but hurt. Some of these cases involved very small, weak dogs, so it's even worse to imply that such a large and powerful breed can be used in this way. We don't have to pass on everything in WP:RSes, especially irresponsible, even dangerous claims such as using a dog as a nanny. Chrisrus (talk) 19:06, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

Presidential Newfies

My quick research indicates the following: James Buchanan 15th U.S. President (1857-1861) Lara: Newfoundland Ulysses S. Grant 18th U.S. President (1869-1877) Faithful: Newfoundland Rutherford B. Hayes 19th U.S. President (1877-1881) Hector: Newfoundland

The claim as to John Adams seems bogus. I can only find reports of "Juno" and "Satan", which were dogs of indeterminate breed. 7&6=thirteen () 13:34, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

The dog in Stephen King's novel, "Cujo", is a St. Bernard, not a Newfoundland.

"...He got up quickly and saw a huge dog emerging from the barn. For one absurd moment he wondered if it really was a dog, or maybe some strange and ugly species of pony. Then, as the dog padded out of the shadows of the barn's mouth, he saw its sad eyes and realized it was a Saint Bernard...."
