Longest history of wine production in the US?
[edit]I would like to see a specific, credible inline reference to back up the statement "New Mexico has the longest history of wine production in the United States", which is the opening statement in the article. Specifically, such a reference would have to address the issue of the dates of introduction of vines to other Spanish-settled parts of the present USA. (Not promotional material from the state's growers please.) It is well documented that the conquistadores brought vines to South America already in the 16th century, so if they brought them everywhere they went, it's not immediately obvious that New Mexico was first in the US. Proposed merge of List of wineries in New Mexico into New Mexico wine
[edit]Wikipedia is not a WP:DIRECTORY of non-notable local businesses. Per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of wineries in Ohio this is better merged to the main article with only notable locations. Reywas92Talk 17:44, 7 November 2021 (UTC)
- List of wineries in New Mexico is not and never has been a directory of local businesses. It is a list of wineries that have had independent coverage in reliable sources. It does not and has never linked to the websites of the businesses, so calling it a "DIRECTORY" is lame and untruthful. Skyerise (talk) 23:26, 7 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Reywas92: Also, you have not specified which of the 7 prohibited types of list it falls into. None of the criteria prohibit lists of businesses local to a state, all of which are notable enough for a list article based on sources. It does not fail (1) because the listed items are closely, not loosely, associated. It does not fail (2) or (3) as it is not genealogical nor does it provide contact information of any kind, neither phone numbers, email addresses, or even web links. It does not fail (4) as it does not list current events, current promotions, or any of the other items prohibited under that heading. It does not fail (5) as it does not provide pricing or availability information. It does not fail (6) because it is an encyclopedic cross-categorization as evidence by the fact that there is a Category:New Mexico wine. It does not fail (7) as it gives the historical and geographic context. If you want to use a criteria to merge or delete an article, you must be specific about how it fails the criteria. There is nothing in the criteria you reference which prohibits a cited list of businesses of a certain type with a state. Skyerise (talk) 23:45, 7 November 2021 (UTC)
- Topic meets WP:NLIST as a notable topic due to two books on the subject, listed under Further reading... Skyerise (talk) 17:56, 8 November 2021 (UTC)
