Contested deletion

[edit]

This article should not be speedily deleted for lack of asserted importance because Wilson is making continual national news. Celebrities have commented on her murder. This is going to be a trial that the media is covering intensely. This is not a typical murder case.

Perhaps the crime is notable. She isn't, most assuredly, per WP:BLP1E. There is nothing whatsoever written about her anywhere except about her murder. I'd suggest asking this be userfied and you re-write it as a crime article. John from Idegon (talk) 02:58, 3 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Please move this Nia Wilson article into draft space otherwise it will get CSD. JC7V-constructive zone 04:17, 3 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@JC7V7DC5768: removed (non-admin) , though can't trivially rename. Obvious ATD means Speedy is inapplicable. ~Hydronium~Hydroxide~(Talk)~ 04:44, 3 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

possible BLPCRIME vio?

[edit]

I've posted at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Crime_and_Criminal_Biography#Murder_of_Nia_Wilson as am not sure what level of coverage of the suspect is considered justified/justifiable at this point in the case. ~Hydronium~Hydroxide~(Talk)~ 22:43, 3 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Cbratbyrudd: The issue isn't that there isn't a lot of RS coverage, but that there is a presumption of innocence for accused suspects (no matter how apparently strong the evidence is), and a presumption of privacy for those who outside of a particular event would not have a public profile. Wikipedia applies a far stronger standard in this respect than that applied by mainstream media. If/when someone is found guilty then BLP protections are weakened. I'm uncomfortable with the level of detail of Cowell's criminal history, and wanted input from editors used to dealing with this issue (on the possibly dangerous presumption that WP:Crime is active). ~Hydronium~Hydroxide~(Talk)~ 07:46, 4 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Photos

[edit]

Hey, I am not good with photos yet, but a few more photos (especially further down) would help convey what happened a lot more efficiently. Wikipedia has an WP:article on where to find images but I have drawn blanks. JC7V-constructive zone 23:57, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I understand the need for consensus. The part about the proud boys is just a complete misrepresentation of the source. It doesn't call them white supremacist, which is why I changed it to far right per the proud boys wiki page. The source does say anything about him being accused of being a member and the "due to the uncalled for attack against two black women, committed by a white man" line is terrible English and does not make sense and is not even in the source. As well as that mentioning that the police say there is no evidence of a racial motive is in the source and should be in the lede. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 110.77.231.131 (talk) 16:12, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The statement is cited. See the slate article quotes below:

"Many assumed that a white man’s reason for an unprovoked attack on two black women—on the eve of a planned Proud Boys gathering in Oakland—was race-based"

Also, "The gathering eventually became a protest—reporter Darwin BondGraham described it as “a mourning procession combined with a militant anti-racist rally.” It converged with a planned “pro-Oakland demonstration” that had been organized to counter a white-supremacist group rumored to be convening at an Oakland bar."

Also see the guardian article cited in the piece which states: "The Proud Boys ... classified by some as a racist hate group, were planning to gather that night in the city – two miles away from the station where Wilson was killed." https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/aug/03/nia-wilson-killing-oakland-white-man-racial-violence-america

The term "alt-right" has also been identified as a renaming of the label White-Supremacist and white-nationalists --with the intention of lessening the negative racist elements of those labels. As such, it is best to stick with the original definition as opposed to a newly invented word. https://www.cjr.org/criticism/alt-right-trump-charlottesville.php https://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/02/opinion/sunday/what-the-alt-right-really-means.html https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2017/8/15/16144070/psychology-alt-right-unite-the-right https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/ideology/alt-right https://www.adl.org/resources/backgrounders/alt-right-a-primer-about-the-new-white-supremacy https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-cage/wp/2017/08/17/heres-what-white-supremacy-looks-and-sounds-like-now-its-not-your-grandfathers-kkk/ https://www.businessinsider.com/why-no-difference-alt-right-white-nationalism-white-supremacy-neo-nazi-charlottesville-2017-8 https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/12/the-making-of-an-american-nazi/544119/ https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-us-canada-38057104/hail-trump-white-nationalists-mark-trump-win-with-nazi-salute https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/aug/17/charlottesville-alt-right-neo-nazis-white-nationalists https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2018/07/23/white-nationalists-alt-right-rally-washington-charlottesville/796998002/ http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-alt-right-white-supremacy-neo-nazis-20161128-story.html

The term alt-right has also been identified as vague and has often been replaced with more accurate language such as "White-Supremacist" https://www.tolerance.org/magazine/fall-2017/what-is-the-altright https://www.thenation.com/article/the-racist-right-looks-left/ https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2017/08/the-dark-minds-of-the-alt-right/537144/ https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/nov/22/white-nationalists-alt-right-nazi-language-trump https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/neo-nazi-never-use-alt-right-white-supremacist-far-right-labels-charlottesville-christian-picciolini-a7911756.html
