Requested move
[edit]Southern Pinwheel Galaxy → Messier 83 — The name "Southern Pinwheel Galaxy" is a real name for Messier 83 (M83). However, the term is not as commonly used as Messier 83 or M83. A google search on "M83 galaxy -Wikipedia" turns up many more pages than "'Souther Pinwheel Galaxy' -Wikipedia". Professional astronomy articles almost always use M83 or another catalog number, and some professional astronomy resources (such as the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database) do not recognize the term "Southern Pinwheel Galaxy". Therefore, I suggest changing the name to "Messier 83". Dr. Submillimeter 15:58, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

- Support - This is the first place I ever saw it referred to as such, Messier 83 is more standard. WilliamKF 17:36, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- Add any additional comments:
- I checked some of my popular astronomy books, including O'Meara's book on the Messier Catalog, and they also do not use the term "Southern Pinwheel Galaxy". This is additional evidence that the page needs to be renamed. Dr. Submillimeter 09:35, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Pop culture reference?
[edit]M83 (French band) is named after this galaxy. Should a section be added to this article to note this? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 143.229.1.17 (talk) 00:09, 15 December 2006 (UTC).
- It might be worth a brief note at the bottom of the page. If the pop references get longer than the actual information about the galaxy, however, the pop references should be moved to a separate page. Dr. Submillimeter 10:23, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
- This could be expanded in a new section named 'Cultural references' or 'In culture' (see Venus) or sth. --Eleassar my talk 17:28, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
Galaxy: Exploring the milky way
[edit]Galaxy: Exploring the milky way says the Distance from earth is 15000000 Ly and the size is 140000LY. Should i put this in? Mocha2007 (talk) 18:07, 3 December 2010 (UTC)
Barred spiral or intermediate spiral?
[edit]The article says that Messier 83 is a barred spiral galaxy, but the infobox says it is an intermediate spiral galaxy. User:Hamterous1 (discuss anything!🐹✈️) 22:47, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
