Cognate with Arabic "mar'"/"mar'[t]"
[edit]Is this cognate with the Arabic mar' مرء (also emre' امرئ) and its feminine form mar'a مرأة (also emra'a[t] امرأة)?
Noticing that in Arabic dialects that don't have a hamza this would be "mar[i]", which is not used in modern Arabic, but the feminine "mara" مرة is.

- Mar → Mar (title)
- MAR → Mar
– Not the primary topic for this very ambiguous trigram. And dab title seems to fit sentence case better than all caps. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 04:42, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
- https://wikinav.toolforge.org/?language=en&title=Mar doesn't show a lot of clicks on the hatnote, but it is #1 outgoing link, so it's probable we'll get better navigation outcomes if we do the move. The current presumed primary topic seems significant but is start class, since 2008, when it was created replacing disambiguation without explanation. --Joy (talk) 11:30, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose - ngram - [2] shows that of the subjects which are actually called Mar, rather than some variant or usage in combination with other words, this topic is the clear leader. The nom also doesn't state any concret rationale other than that it's "very ambiguous", without evidence. Suggest the status quo is definitely best here. Cheers — Amakuru (talk) 16:09, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Amakuru: My thought was that there are many possible targets for someone searching "Mar", not just pages strictly called that: the month, Spanish for sea (as in Mar-a-Lago), etc. Additionally, Wiktionary-listed Earl of Mar changes the pageview dynamic (the base title advantage also seems like something to consider). - This would be prejudiced against ambiguous surname usage, which is generally common (but often goes unnoticed because of WP:NAMELIST). If we go to mass views over there and then add the top entries to the page views graph like this, we see that the overall interest in people named Mar easily compares to the interest in the title. --Joy (talk) 19:59, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
- Support per nom.--Ortizesp (talk) 04:58, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
- Support the likely primary topic is March (month) , but disambiguation is also good -- 67.70.25.175 (talk) 05:50, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
- Support looking at views[[3]] it seems that there is no primary topic given titles like MÄR could easily be searched like this in English. Crouch, Swale (talk) 20:43, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
