Plot and characters
Needs to have the plot up front and integrate the character info into it. Also we surely don't need a complete credits list - we ought to leave that kind of thing to IMDB. --Lee M (talk) 18:59, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
References
If movie/TV references are listed, could they be explained? I'll add Ice Age (Alex bumps/slides downhill just like Scrat does) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.165.194.66 (talk) 18:59, 16 June 2005 (UTC)
BTW, Shrek is actually mentioned in the movie. (When Alex is looking for his friends) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.165.194.66 (talk) 20:09, 18 June 2005 (UTC)
- Should someone mention that the movie includes loads of stuff from other places (eg. Wilson from Cast Away, the National Geographic theme music ...) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 219.77.80.200 (talk) 14:25, 21 July 2005 (UTC)
- As mentioned above, the movie is full of references. It would be a good thing to integrate them into the main page.
- Sequence of steaks falling all around Alex ==> falling rose petals from American Beauty.
- Ship hijacking, ship running ashore ==> Speed 2: Cruise Control

- There was a bunch of stuff deleted around 12:00, July 8, 2005 by 203.45.144.223. Most of it quite useless, belonging to IMDB, but e.g. the movie references could be used - if explained. So here is the list as of date above:
- Movie and television references:
- I think it would really be nice to have these on the page, but it only makes sense with some references to where they appear. I might just watch the movie again sometime... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kreia (talk • contribs) 03:31, 20 August 2005 (UTC)

The Great Escape is also referenced. --Holy (talk) 21:27, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
The "Leap of Faith" Marty makes at the beginning of the flim is a paraody of a similar leap in the earlier Dreamworks moive Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. Somebody has deleted all but the bare bones of this article, starting with my story synopsis. It's true that the article was too long, but now it's too short. I'm putting the story section back up and we'll see what happens next. --Lee M (talk) 13:13, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
Mort
What kind of animal is Mort, the "mouse lemur"? --Helix84 (talk) 13:37, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
- For information, go to http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4135670.stm. --Jason Palpatine (talk) 23:05, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
- He is a species of giant mouse lemur known as Mirza zaza, -- scientific name Microcebus lehilahytsara. It has a long bushy tail and is about the size of a grey squirrel. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jason Palpatine (talk • contribs) 04:35, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you. Would you add this info into the article? How did you find out anyway? Now I tried to google on 'madagascar "Mirza zaza" Mort' but nothing relevant turned up. Seems it's not too widely known. Are you sure about it in connection with the character of Mort the Lemur or you just found a "mouse lemur"? --Helix84 (talk) 13:23, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
- From the article: Microcebus lehilahytsara, or Goodman's mouse lemur, lives in eastern Madagascar's rainforest. It is little bigger than a mouse, with short, rounded ears and a white stripe on its nose." Mort fits the description to a T. I looked it up without using his name -- it missleads the search-engine. You see, Mort is the title of a Discworld novel by Terry Pratchett and also the name of its main character. --Jason Palpatine (talk) 15:10, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
- Mort the Lemur -- note short, rounded ears and a white stripe on his nose.
- The real thing for comparison -- note short, rounded ears and a white stripe on its nose

- Would you please look up the other lemurs, too and add them to the article? Existing source identifying them is preffered. Thanks. --Helix84 (talk) 18:19, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
- Mouse lemur. --61.230.72.211 (talk) 13:53, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
Not convinced about Mort's species type
Despite the addition of the new citation that supposedly demonstrates that Mort is a Goodman's Mouse Lemur, I'm not entirely convinced. The source is from film.com, not something I would consider a reliable source. For all we know, the brief mention of Mort as a Goodman's Mouse Lemur could have been come from a reviewer who looked here on Wiki for more information. Can no one come up with a better source? Wouldn't it just be better to refer to Mort as a Mouse lemur, since distinguishing between the 16 species outside of the academic world (and especially in the academically-challenged Hollywood circle) is not likely to be accurate? –Visionholder (talk) 19:36, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
Okay, I decided to see if I could get to the bottom of this, and here is what I found: I have only found 2 websites that mention why people think Mort is a Goodman's Mouse Lemur—one on bebo.com (a blog) and one on allexperts.com (another online encyclopedia). Both say exactly the same thing, character for character: "Mort the Lemur -- rounded ears and a white stripe on his nose show him to be a Goodman's Mouse Lemur." Regardless of which came first, it appears the author of one of these two pages made their own personal assesment, possibly using online pictures of mouse lemurs, like those found here on Wiki. From there, it looks like it took off and started popping up all over fan sites and blogs, eventually turning into "Internet FACT" (if something gets posted on enough blogs and fan sites, then it has to be true!!). Let me just say that as someone who studies lemurs and who has worked hands-on with mouse lemurs, the "rounded ears and a white stripe on his nose" do NOT demonstrate that Mort is a Goodman's Mouse Lemur. Consider this Gray Mouse Lemur photo that I helped take. Also, if you look in "Lemurs of Madagascar" (2nd ed., p. 94-96) by Mittermeier, et al., you'll see that all the mouse lemurs match that description. For this reason, unless someone can produce a source that comes directly from DreakWorks studio that states otherwise, I am considering this information to be hearsay and consequently false. Therefore, I am changing the reference to Mort to read "Mouse lemur" instead of "Goodman's Mouse Lemur". (P.S. - Now I remember why I try to avoid pages that relate to pop culture...) –Visionholder (talk) 20:12, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
Penguins and Alex
The penguins were not stowed away on board. (When using stowed as 'To hide oneself aboard a conveyance in order to obtain free transportation.') I reworded it to show that they were also being shipped to Kenya (why penguins would be shipped to Kenya is beyond me but after viewing the film again, the box that the penguins are in says Penguins and has a shipping lable to the wildlife preserve in Kenya). Also Alex is concerned about himself rather than the group when facing the celebrity status of Shamu. --ImmortalGoddezz (talk) 22:26, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the rewrite, I was wondering about that myself. It seems they shipped the ENTIRE zoo.
- As for Alex, self interest is not a crime. --Jason Palpatine (talk) 22:23, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
- Penguins dont live in Kenya, I know that. Mabye the people were going to air or land ship them from there... --DPG (talk) 14:04, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Worst films of 2005 by... who?
"Madagascar is considered one of the worst films of 2005 according to the International Ratings of Filming Trust (IRFT)." This seems a little out-of-nowhere; I've done searches on this 'IRFT' and got no results, or anything even resembling them... even the name sounds like it's not resembling any real organization. Is it really notable at all? --Wrath of Mn7 (talk) 14:43, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
Foosa or fossa?
Since the spelling of this word keeps getting changed between the actual animal (fossa) and the spelling used in the movie (foosa), let's just make a template. That way, when someone wants to change the spelling, they'll only have to change it in the template and they'll get all of the wording in one fell swoop. Any objections? --Val42 (talk) 05:08, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
- No, the actual animal is "fossa" as well. The movie simply pronounces the word as "foosa", but I don't think this is correct. --Dora Nichov (talk) 04:33, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- In the soundtrack book it says foosa and as long as it pertains to the subject I would keep it that way. --DPM (talk) 01:32, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- I know they SAY foosa, but it's NOT correct! Also, the TRUE spelling is fossa, so there! --Dora Nichov (talk) 08:27, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
- Since the movie pronounces it "foosa" I think it would probably be more sensible to pronounce it "foosa"; even if it is incorrect enlish. --eskimospy(talk) 01:19, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
- Does that mean you'd spell "which" "wich"? --Dora Nichov (talk) 14:26, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
- Actually, they spelled it right on the DVD, (Fossa Whack, the game, etc.). I'm siding with Dora Nichov on this. We should leave it as Fossa and not Foosa. --64.105.136.146 (talk) 03:31, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
- It's clearly written as "foosa" on a sign in the movie though, when Alex is heading into their territory. --MoraSique (talk) 03:48, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
FOOSA --Lovethelord801 (talk) 21:53, 19 July 2015 (UTC)
Can somebody fix this?
It's FOOSA, not Fossa. I don't know how to change headings. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Heatherfire (talk • contribs) 21:01, 5 December 2006 (UTC).
- OK, I did. --eskimospy(talk) 16:01, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
- Ask any animal expert you want -- it's FOSSA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyways, I searched google for "foosa" and nothing relevant turned up. Just because a silly old movie spells it that way doesn't mean it's true. --Dora Nichov (talk) 10:40, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
- You would be correct if this were an article about the animal called fossa. However, this is an article about the film Madagascar. We should document that this film spells the name of the animal incorrectly, but then state that the spelling in this article is going to use that as used in the film. --Val42 (talk) 19:41, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
- Uhh... How 'bout we use correct English and state the film is incorrect? I mean, if a filem spells giraffe "jirafe" you wouldn't spell it that way in the article of the movie in question. --Dora Nichov (talk) 09:44, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
- Is this an article about an animal or a film? Should we then not document the film rather than the animal? But let's see what the consensus is. -Val42 (talk) 19:10, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
- Just because fossa are little-known and that this is a film article doesn't mean you can misspell a word. --Dora Nichov (talk) 09:31, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
- Same as Val42 and, the sign says "BEWARE OF FOOSA" in the movie. If the correct spelling of foosa is fossa, that doesn't mean the sign said "BEWARE OF FOSSA" rather than "BEWARE OF FOOSA". (note: I already changed the article to say "BEWARE OF FOOSA".) --168.103.242.193 (talk) 16:51, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
- Also Dora Nichov is the only user who thinks the spelling in the article should be fossa so the spelling should probably be foosa. --168.103.242.193 (talk) 16:54, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
- I reverted the vandalism as well as the "foosa" change. Reading the fossa (animal) article, it seems obvious this is the animal intended to be portrayed in the film. I, too, remember seeing a sign that read "BEWARE OF FOOSA"; but I would take this as comedic license indicating the indigenous lemurs can't spell. I can remember many cartoons that portray misspelled signs that have been created by the creatures/animals in the cartoon; it would never be assumed that a misspelled sign was meant legitimately to infer a completely different meaning than the properly spelled word -- simply that our characters can't spell. — pd_THOR | =/\= | 19:43, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
- I understand what you are trying to say however, even if "BEWARE OF FOOSA" was supposed to be a joke, that is what the sign said and it should be stated in this article that "BEWARE OF FOOSA" is what the sign read. --168.103.242.193 (talk) 21:54, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
- I agree with that but in all other places we should use the correct spelling. --Dora Nichov (talk) 09:36, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
King Julian
While tagging some articles I found King Julian. As that article is linkless, and it doesn't seem to be notable to have its own article, I suggest merging any valuable content here. Someone who is in touch with this article and knows the importance of the character should be able to decide if that article has something to offer that has not been said here. Once merged, or if there is nothing to merge, convert it to a redirect to this article. Thanks! --ReyBrujo (talk) 17:53, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
- Redirect. I agree that it's not worth its own article. --Elonka (talk) 23:55, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
- Merge and redirect — Put information in this article. --Val42 (talk) 04:04, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
- Merge and you migth as well delete the King Julia article as well. --Bedford (talk) 13:22, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
- Merge I don't think there's anything substantial in this article that isn't in the main Madagascar one. There's really no point in having a separate King Julian article unless is says something other than character ID. If you have some sort of analysis of the character, fine, but if it's just a mere bio, it is not necessary. --Kimwells (talk) 14:37, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
- Merge the article, definitely. There's no reason for it to have its own article. --Crazysunshine (talk) 04:09, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- Well, given that there appears to be no opposition here, I put in some notes about the king in the separate article into this one, and then turned King Julian into a redirect. --Crazysunshine (talk) 04:14, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- I am going to change the location of the redirect to "http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Madascar_(film)#The_Lemurs" is was "http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Madascar_(film)" previously. --eskimospy(talk) 14:25, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Deletion proposal
In the section "inaccuracies" most of the ideas (represented by bullets) are extremely obvious and also, this article is about a ""fiction"" movie so, I think it is best to either: a. delete this section b. delete all unneccasary information from this section c. scatter the bullets amongst the whole page. --eskimospy(talk) 01:26, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
Please post your feelings about the above proposal here. --eskimospy(talk) 02:53, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
- The inaccuracies section should be deleted; it's totally superfluous, like pointing out that lions can't talk, penguins don't normally carry lit sticks of dynamite, and zebras as a matter of course don't set up cabana bars. Is Alex's acid trip accurate? Was there enough snow on the ground in Antarctica? C'mon, let's stick to what's relevant. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.205.32.53 (talk) 05:54, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
Popculture references
It seems I am getting into a editfight with someone about the section of popculture references. This is not my intention, my goals are sincere and I will explain here why I deleted some of the adds.
- Gremlins. Mort may resemble Gizmo from the movie, but he does not act like him in anyway. Besides, as seen above, Mort is inspired by the mouse lemur. Just because he reminds of the furry little creature does not mean that it is a intended reference to another movie.
- Dune, The Madness of King George, Good Morning, Vietnam, Little Ghost, Napoleon Dynamite, Ravenous, - no explanation or sources. See WP:V.
Just because the IMdB has them listed as references does not mean they are intented. See where I'm getting at? The IMdB doesn't have any sources either, so to say that they are listed on that website does not mean they are needed here.
I hope I made myself clear. If there are any conflicts, I suggest we take it up to resolving disputes. WP:DR

Critical Response
I removed the IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes ratings. The mention of mixed reviews (along with popular appeal and box office take) should be enough--there's no need to include info from other sites which is subject to change anyway, right? --Maxrandom777 (talk) 02:13, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
- I put the reviews back in for three reasons: they are not subject to change, vaguely saying "mixed reviews" does not give the reader of the article an accurate picture of the film's standing, and the review information has remained unchanged since the article was created, so I see no reason to delete it now. --Justanotherguy (talk) 02:15, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
Characters
Can we make a new page for all of the characters of Madagascar? It was done with the Ice Age page and it makes things alot tidier. --EwanMclean2005 (talk) 22:23, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
The "inaccuracies" section
I took this off the main page because it seems ridiculous to point out these facts in an animated film. "Chimpanzees aren't monkeys"? "A giraffe can't bend its neck in every direction"? They also can't speak English and sing "I Like to Move It, Move It," but it's called suspension of disbelief! So for posterity's sake, I'm leaving this section here.
Factual Inaccuracies
- Fossa do not hunt in packs.
- Lemur troops are usually led by a female.
- Lemurs don't form multi-species troops.
- Hummingbirds don't live in Madagascar.
- Saguaro cactuses are not found in Madagascar.
- The nearest current to Madagascar tends to flow in a counterclockwise direction, so in real life Marty, Melman, Alex, and Gloria, would end up in either Pakistan or India.
- A giraffe cannot bend its neck in every direction. If one tried, it would break its neck.
- Adelie penguins don't live in Africa. This was mentioned by Skipper and is probably a joke.
- The Central Park Zoo does not own or house lions, giraffes, zebras or hippopotamuses. To see these animals in New York City visitors have to visit the Bronx Zoo instead.
- Chimpanzees aren't monkeys.
- There are no restrooms in in that area on the downtown 4,5,6 Lexingtion line subway station.
--Procrastinatrix (talk) 17:20, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- The animals aren't really talking, they're making animal noises. --68.166.188.217 (talk) 04:53, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Notable roles
Two IP addresses (possibly the same editor) have added "notable roles" to the cast information and I've removed this both times. If anyone wants to know what the actors have also appeared in, they can check the articles about the actors. It's information overload to include in that table other films that they have appeared in. The choice of other work could be controversial, with different editors disagreeing about which other films should be mentioned. Oh, and the formatting was wrong... --BencherliteTalk 09:40, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
Suggestion of alternate reference
In the "Allusions and parody" section, I do not agree with the proposed reference (second to last) about the line "It's been a pleasure serving with you, boys"... I believe this line is a reference to the film Titanic, when the musicians are playing during evacuation of the boat and must stop because of the high raising level of the water "Gentlemen. It has been a privilege playing with you tonight.". I did not change it in the article as I wish to start discussion on this matter. --Smumdax (talk) 22:47, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
Page history merge
Since there are THREE Madagascar films, one from 1994, one from 2005, the third being the forthcoming 2008 sequel to the 2005 film, "Madagascar (film)" SHOULD be a disambiguation page!...at least I think so... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Okapi7 (talk • contribs) 03:15, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Madagascar (2005 film) → Madagascar (film) – The 1994 film has had 234 views, compared to 10645 for the 2005 film. I think it could hardly be more obvious that anyone typing in "Madagascar (film)" would be seeking out the 2005 DreamWorks film, and not a far more obscure 1994 property of the same name. And if they're looking for the sequels, or the franchise as a whole, then those are already linked from the 2005 film's article. If someone is looking for the 1994 film, then a hatnote pointing to it should be fine. Ten Pound Hammer • (What did I screw up now?) 00:21, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose. There has been several discussions on Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (films), and move discussions throughout this year like here and here, that a disambiguation phrase in parentheses that solely consists of the word "film" is still ambiguous and vague, even though one of the films may have significantly more recent traffic. WP:NCF#Between films of the same name has been changed accordingly to read, "For the other films (or all the films, if none of them are the primary topic), add the year of its first verifiable release ... Do not use partial disambiguation, such as Titanic (film), when more than one film needs to be disambiguated." Zzyzx11 (talk) 02:01, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Well, that's a stupid rule. Ten Pound Hammer • (What did I screw up now?) 02:50, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC (which does not apply to disambiguators). "...Anyone typing in 'Madagascar (film)' would be seeking out the 2005 DreamWorks film..." Hardly anyone will actually type "Madagascar (film)" anywhere. S/he would likely type something like "Madagascar", "Madagascar film", or "Madagascar movie" either using Google or the Wikipedia search function and would then be lead to this article through the country page or a Google or Wikipedia search results page. Using "(film)" as disambiguator makes this process no easier than using "(2005 film)" as a disambiguator. But using "(2005 film)" serves much better to eliminate ambiguity in settings such as the Madagascar (disambiguation) page where several films are listed. — AjaxSmack 03:23, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- That view (that PRIMARYTOPIC doesn't apply to disambiguators) is controversial and under discussion, as codified at WP:PDAB. Just a note. --BDD (talk) 17:53, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose per convention as discussed and codified. --Tassedethe (talk) 04:39, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose per NCF --76.65.128.222 (talk) 12:51, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose per NCF, but redirect Madagascar (film) here per WP:PDAB. As long as there is no consensus to remove PDAB, this film is one of those "occasional exceptions" it refers. Tbhotch.™ Grammatically incorrect? Correct it! See terms and conditions. 21:24, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose per the guidelines because the term "Madagascar (film)" is inherently ambiguous when we have two articles about films titled Madagascar. Topics that are not the primary topic (in this case, Madagascar) should be disambiguated from each other. This kind of request is unnecessary housekeeping. Erik (talk | contribs) 21:36, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose. Moving a disambiguator to another page with a disambiguator just seems silly, unless what's inside the parentheses needs to be changed without affecting other articles (like the whole "entertainer" thing a while back). Taylor Trescott - my talk + my edits 16:55, 17 August 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose. If we have to disambiguate anyway, I see little to be gained from this move. We don't have a hierarchy of PRIMARYTOPICs with nested disambiguation. bobrayner (talk) 12:28, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

Home Media Release/Edit Request 1/19/14
When was Madagascar released on DVD and VHS? I do know that it was Dreamworks Animation last CGI film on VHS but not the last overall. The last Dreamworks Animation VHS was Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, which came out onto DVD and VHS on February 7, 2006. However, I can't edit the page because don't know the home media release date and the page is protected from vandalism. Could the Madagascar article please be edited to mention the home media release date? --24.147.1.197 (talk) 21:23, 19 January 2014 (UTC) Jacob Chesley
