MY Farley Mowat → MV Farley Mowat – Match the sip listing at https://www.seashepherd.org.au/images/who-we-are/fleet-SSG-Fleet-Poster-01-3000w.jpg, to match SSCS facebook pages as well. The island class vessels are all Motor Vessels, not Motor Yachts. Terrillja talk 01:08, 9 January 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose without better information - This has been discussed at other pages for years. See here and here for examples. Essentially, SSCS plays fast and loose with ship prefixes. Typically it registers vessels as pleasure craft (motor yachts) because MV requires a captains ticket while MY does not but there has been more than one case where SSCS has listed an "MY" vessel as "MV" on its websites. Indeed, this is the case with MY Steve Irwin, which is listed as "M/V" on the image linked to by the nom when SSCS has previously listed it as "M/Y".[1] We really need to see the actual registration information before any move can be considered. For the record, I've requested input from the people at WP:SHIP. They may be able to provide some guidance with this ongoing problem. --AussieLegend (✉) 05:54, 9 January 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose per Aussie Legend. Unless and until solid independent evidence is provided then the article should stay at the MY title. I'm not interested in SSCS's habit of calling it a MY or MV depending on which is the most convenient for them at the time in question. Mjroots (talk) 18:31, 9 January 2018 (UTC)
- Weak oppose but first let's get three things out of the way - there is nothing official about the use of these civilian ship category descriptive prefixes which some love so much (not just on WP, but also many of the RS that we use); they are all used by choice of the writer, shipping company, publisher - secondly, they are only rarely part of the name (and most registration authorities forbid their use as such, though there are exceptions). Then, thirdly, they are not mutually exclusive, ie MV is a motor(ised) vessel, conventionally limited to internal combustion engines to distinguish from steam ships (SS). Just because other more specific prefixes may be used for a vessel, eg MT (motor tanker), MFV (motor fishing vessel or MY (motor yacht), it does not mean that describing them as MV would be wrong, and some may choose to do so, as may WP.
- So, to the case in hand. If WP wishes to affix such prefixes to at least some ships, as it does, it should surely follow verifiable facts from reliable non-POV sources (which therefore excludes SSCS and those parroting it). As AussieLegend notes, a ship is registered as a specific type of vessel as this affects the regulatory regime under which it falls - passenger vessel, tankers, bulk carriers, fishing vessels, workboats etc etc of different sizes and areas of operation have different international rules as well as national ones, as do yachts - and large commercial yachts (ie used for charter or hire) differ from other yachts which are for private use only. This Farley Mowat was first registered under US flag (USCG #1264948) as a "recreational" vessel [2]; last autumn she transferred to Barbados registry - that register's data is not available online, but the Barbados telecoms administration notified the allocation of call sign and MMSI to the ITU and a skeleton record shows her ship type description as "YAT" (=yacht)[3]. So choosing to use MY is perfectly reasonable and not misleading if a prefix is wanted and I see no reason to change to MV (even though I do not believe that it would be wrong). a knife or a boat?
[edit]Type "cutter" in Google and see this: [4]. Now tell us that we don't need to specify the article is about a boat. Per WP:EASTEREGG: Do not use piped links to create "Easter egg" links that require the reader to open them before understanding what's going on. BatteryIncluded (talk) 22:21, 9 January 2018 (UTC)
