Political views section

[edit]

I hold doubt about how Simon Leys' quote reflects Liu Xiaobo's idea. Liu is famous for his criticism on Chinese nationalism and Leys quote attributes him as nationalist. Why don't people quote the Liu's pieces on Chinese nationalism and modernization instead of relying on a third person comment which takes a unbalanced large part in the section. Secondly, why there is a whole section on his pro-US stances on his political views section when his most famous views are the views on Chinese political system and democratic reform? His pro-US views are criticized, as reported by even the NYTimes. Unfortunately, Wikipedia policy says itself must remain neutral. That's why we have to add that in so that we have a much fuller picture of him. In fact, I wish he stayed out of jail so that we could hear more flipflopping from him. That's why I also added in his criticism on the Iraq prisoner abuse scandals.Supermann (talk) 18:52, 15 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The problem of ignorance

[edit]

has been manifested by whoever changed "gaol" to "goal" in the Thoughts § 98.4.124.117 (talk) 04:16, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

So the audit trail makes clear why I wrote above. See that it's gone back to goal and that "gaol" apparently was a typo from the very badly mangled text I originally encountered. The secondary source given confirms "goal". It in turn refers to a chapter (Using Truth to undermine a System built on Lies) in a text by (Xia) Liu that is behind a paywall at Harvard which is an acceptance speech by Xiaobo, translated by an Eva S. Chou for which the Chinese is in periodical mentioned at the end of the chapter. In any case her full translation is:

I knew at the time that Mao-style thinking and Cultural Revolution–style language had become ingrained in me, and my goal had been to transform myself from the bone marrow out. Hah!—Easier said than done. It may take me a lifetime to rid myself of the poison.

Link, E. Perry, and Tienchi Martin-Liao. No Enemies, No Hatred : Selected Essays and Poems, edited by Xia Liu, Harvard University Press, 2012. ProQuest Ebook Central, . Created from buffalo on 2017-08-16 05:45:38. "Gaol" should have been rejected prima facie, it's not a term a person with no more than basic English, or a translator would likely use but it seemed the most plausible at the time. 98.4.124.117 (talk) 12:47, 16 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
