@MX: You said, "There are 77 statues. See the first 37 here and the remaining 40 here. There's a book that covers them in detail. Spanish Wikipedia has an article already but doesn't cite any sources."

I've started this list. In the first link you shared above, I see there are a total of 38 statues mentioned, not 37. The current list has 38 entries. I believe 2 statues were relocated or removed (Juan Antonio de la Fuente and Miguel Ramos Arizpe), and two new ones were installed in 2006: Plutarco González and León Guzmán. However, I do not speak Spanish, so perhaps I am misunderstanding.

I have not yet looked at the "remaining 40" (or so), but I was wondering if you might be willing to take a look at the list I've put together so far. Are there any notes you can add about the statues? I'm not looking for details about the people, just the statues themselves, such as when they were installed, the artists, etc. Really, anything will help. I gather each state of Mexico gifted 2 statues, but I'm not comfortable drafting a history of these statues without outside help from Spanish speakers. If you're not interested, no worries! ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:47, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@ProtoplasmaKid: I see you've uploaded some images of these statues of Wikimedia Commons. Do you have any interest in helping out here, or know any other editors who might be interested in making this list better? ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:00, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Help identifying subjects

[edit]

commons:Category:Sculptures in Paseo de la Reforma has many images of statues installed along Paseo de la Reforma. Can anyone help by identifying depicted individuals? Ideally, we could add images to this list, and have subcategories at Wikimedia Commons for individual statues. Feel free to create new categories at Commons, or simply identify subjects by file name here and I will do the rest. (This source should help.)

Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:51, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Tbhotch and MPJ-DK: I figured I'd ping to see if you'd be interested in helping with this project to: 1) make sure the list of statues along Paseo de la Reforma is complete, 2) create stubs for the people depicted in the statues, and 3) identify images of statues at Wikimedia Commons. I'm also not sure if any of the statues should have their own articles? Either way, happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 05:02, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

New subcategories

[edit]

Ok, I created the following subcategories at Wikimedia Commons:

I've included numbers above, which correspond to how the statues are currently displayed in the list. I'm open to displaying the statues differently, but for now hopefully this will help confirm which statues are illustrated at Commons and which are not. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:55, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly identified

Pending

[edit]

@Another Believer: Are there other files that need to be identified or subjects that need pictures (note that the female statues are pending to be pictured and many of the male statues have been vandalized over and over again during 8M protests)? (CC) Tbhotch 01:31, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid I haven't fully reconciled this list with commons:Category:Sculptures in Paseo de la Reforma, which has many images of statues needing to be placed into subcategories. I would very much welcome assistance with comparing this list with Commons to see which statues still need to be photographed. ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:51, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This source may be helpful (scroll down a bit to see the map). StellarD (talk) 10:08, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Some of these subjects have articles at Spanish Wikipedia, but not English Wikipedia. Care to help turn red links blue? ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:18, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

MexicoMaxico seems to be a personal blog, but I think they are basing their article on this, which is an official source. As libraries are closed in Mexico City, I can't get the full book, but yeah, this list has potential. (CC) Tbhotch 02:14, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Tbhotch, Yes! Thank you for sharing. I don't know if these statues are individually notable (like the sculptures in the National Statuary Hall Collection are), but I would love to see this list expanded and illustrated. I don't know enough about Mexican culture to identify the depicted people in photographs at Wikimedia Commons. I sure enjoyed walking down Paseo de la Reforma, though, and seeing all these statues and other sculptures. Made me want to learn more. Thanks for any improvements you're able to make here. ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:21, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Most of them are probably not (especially if the subject is unknown to the general public). The main problem I'm speculating right now is that Reforma's length is almost 15 kilometers (the touristic Reforma goes from Campo Marte to Garibaldi). It starts 5 kilometers to the west of Chapultepec, and ends a few blocks away from Misterios metro station. So there might be more statues other than the ones listed here. Another option would be to create articles about sculptures and/or monuments. Those that are renowned already have articles (excepting es:Fuente de Petróleos (Ciudad de México) and Monumento a la Revolución, that as far as I know is not in the avenue, just near it).
