Changes

Ok, whoever changed the highest grossing franchises and film series should know some things: The Lion King is indeed a franchise, it's one theatrical film followed by two Direct-to-video sequels (The Lion King II: Simba's Pride and The Lion King 1½), so it is eligible for the list, so is Aladdin, Tarzan, Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, The Jungle Book, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Mulan. So you might do a better research next time you go one modifying things like that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DCF94 (talkcontribs) 09:38, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

I didn't make the change, but if we're going to allow "franchises" with only one theatrical film, we should also add the likes of Frozen and Up. Box Office Mojo includes one-film franchises on their list, so it makes sense for ours to as well. Anterras (talk) 20:11, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
The list is called Highest-grossing animated franchises and film series not only franchises or "theatrically released" films, a film series needs at least 2 movies to be a series, now, how I see it, The Lion King for example, the first film was released theatrically so it has a box office gross, the two sequels however, were released direct-to-video, even then, they are 3 movies, if it's not considerate a franchise, it is a film series for sure. And BOM is not always 100% right on all their lists, take The Wind Rises for example, they have the movie on the 2014 Worldwide grossings, when in fact was released in Japan (which is the production country) and other countries in 2013 (in summer I might add) and not only that, the foreign total is (according to them): $112,722,821 when in fact Japan has $119,513,192 alone. So my point is that wikipedia deals with facts and BOM dosen't always have all of them, if you go visit www.the-numbers.com you will see that they are considering Lion King and other film series with only one theatrically released film. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DCF94 (talkcontribs) 21:11, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
Do you mean this page? It looks like The Numbers also includes series with only one film (e.g., His Dark Materials). However, I thought it was implicitly assumed that this list only deals with theatrical films; otherwise we'd have to consider home media sales when calculating grosses. Anterras (talk) 22:20, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
I don't see that specified anywhere (about the theatrical films only thing) but what I see is the title of the section Highest grossing franchises and film series and like I said before, a film series is a film series, whether they are all theatrical or dtv; and yes, if by chance Frozen would make a dtv sequel, I'll strongly suggest it to be put on the list. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DCF94 (talkcontribs) 23:10, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
As per the first paragraph of Highest-Grossing Films, when it says "Highest grossing", what it means is "Highest box-office grossing". Maybe something similar should be added to the top of this page. And in the Franchises list, they clearly follow that rule, since Batman lists nine films even though there are many more DTV films. Anterras (talk) 23:49, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
Yeah but, Batman, unlike, Lion King doesn't have enough to get on the list, so I won't worry about that if I were you. And what are you trying to say is that you should follow BOM's "franchise" list like a sheep? event when they are clearly other series (with 2 films) like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Rio, The Jungle Book, event fuckin' Rugrats (with 3 films I might add). — Preceding unsigned comment added by DCF94 (talkcontribs) 09:03, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
DCF94, Please follow the guidelines mentioned at WP:TPNO while answering on talk pages and don't use vulgarism. And regarding the subject here, I agree with Anterras. Unless movies were theatrically released they need not be mentioned here. The term "gross" applies for the money earned by theatrical films and not other media. If the list is done by your logic, then on the highest-grossing franchises list and this list, the Cars franchise must be on top as it earned it more than $10 billion from media other than theatrical films. In theaters

I don't think Toy Story 3 and Despicable Me are still in theaters. JDDJS (talk) 05:35, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

I think it is a bad idea even attempting to mark that, it varies significantly depending where you are and quickly becomes out of date creating just another things for editors to maintain and clean up. Wikipedia is an encyclopeida WP:NOTNEWS. (Also since it the information is shown only as colour it is not accessibility friendly.)
I would strongly encourage removing it. I will remove it soon, if there are no strong reasons given to keep it and if nothing is done to improve accessibility. -- Horkana (talk) 15:48, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
I feel it should be there because then the readers know which movies can still move up. However, I don't feel strongly enough about this to revert you if you do change it. JDDJS (talk) 01:38, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
To not fail entirely and be somewhat accessible it should use colour only as a secondary indicator, there should be some text or even something as little as an asterisk* (or bold formatting but it isn't ideal). -- Horkana (talk) 02:41, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
I am not against those changes but I am unfamiliar in proper formating. JDDJS (talk) 04:34, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

I'm not sure this movie really counts as an animated film. Only sections of it are animated, most of it is live action. JDDJS (talk) 04:01, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

If no one says not to by Sunday, I'm just going to change it. JDDJS (talk) 18:47, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
I think it's entry should be restored , because Box Office Mojo has Roger Rabbit included in its animated box office list, despite its live action sequences. ~ Jedi94 (talk) 22:28, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
Box Office Mojo seems to be the primary (only?) source for this list and article, so if they include it on their list then it seems strange to go against the source on this issue unless the editor has another source. Hmmm {{One source}}? -- Horkana (talk) 15:48, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
Well I disagree, but I won't stop you from adding it back in, unless I happen to find a source that says otherwise. JDDJS (talk) 21:20, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
Although I disagree with you and I think Jedi94 makes a good point I'm in no hurry to add it back either. In December 2010 Roger Rabit was at 35, if it had been higher up the list I might have been more concerned. In case another editor does want to add it back I may as well save them a bit of effort and direct them to a diff with the Roger Rabbit details which might make adding it back slightly less hassle. -- Horkana (talk) 01:29, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
Good point, the film is already at a low point in the list, so its inclusion should not be that huge of a matter. ~ Jedi94 (talk) 20:08, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Lion King

Lion King should be updated with the 2011 figures. With it's current run it's already at number 3, possible even number 2. 184.183.26.41 (talk) 15:36, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

Not done: I do believe it is a single film and not a franchise or series, so despite the fact that it grossed over $900 million, it isn't included on the list. --Mαuri’96...over the Borderline19:35, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

List of highest-grossing American computer-animated films

The content that was present in the List of highest-grossing American computer-animated films has been merged to this page because they are both related subjects that overlap one another. There does not need to be a separate entry for every concept or subject. It is far more reasonable to cover that content (highest-grossing computer-animated films) in its own section on a page that's based on the same, yet broader subject (highest-grossing animated films in general). ~ Jedi94 (talk) 03:37, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

Question

How did Brave get from $535 million to $538 million? That was a few weeks ago. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.67.180.74 (talk) 16:17, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

Box Office Mojo reports $538 million as its total gross. It's possible that they simply had not updated the number for a while.~ Jedi94 (talk) 18:17, 9 May 2013 (UTC)
For Madagascar 3, it grossed out $742 million in Box Office Mojo, and in a different site, The Numbers, it said it grossed out $746 million. Do people still go with Box Office Mojo? I just wished that Madagascar 3 will grossed out a little more. (And the Numbers said Brave grossed out $555 million, but it's $538 million) But still I wished Madagascar 3 will grossed a little bit more.

Techniques

It seems like, if there's going to be a section that separates the films by animation technique, more techniques should be added - the most obvious one I can think of is hand-drawn (I was surprised this wasn't already there). Also, some of the subsections in the "technique" section don't really seem to actually be techniques - for example, while I think they should still be included in this article, anime and films based on television series don't seem to make sense there. It seems as though "technique" would mean the way in which the animation is done, not the style of the animation or the original medium the source material had been found in. Pixar compututer animation flim series

Should we put all the pixar's flim in one series. Reasons way can be see on this page. http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/List_of_Pixar_film_references With 13 movies so far. Earning $7,822,557,640 worldwide. If marvel gets one (also own by Disney) Why can not pixar have one. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.236.79.4 (talk) 15:30, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

Marvel's films all take place in the same universe, and are really all part of one franchise. Pixar's films are simply made by the same studio, and even if they do somehow happen to take place in the same universe, I don't think any notable media has considered them to be the same franchise. Perhaps there could be an article comparing the total amounts of money made by various film studios' films, but I'm not sure whether that could be done fairly (due to vastly different numbers of films - though the average gross of the films could possibly be used for the comparison - and probable conflicts over which film studios some films should count as having been made by) or accurately (it would probably be difficult to get reliable data on many old films, and film studios that have existed longer would probably have their average grosses unfairly skewed downward due to inflation). Alphius (talk) 05:07, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

Monster Incorporated

The 1st film is now out of cinema so you should be able to do it this time. It sands at $562,816,356 You better do it before the sconond 1 is out. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.98.167.114 (talk) 12:10, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

Has Monsters, Inc. 3D really been out this long? Where has Monsters, Inc. been in theatres, such that it was able to gross any more money anytime recently? Alphius (talk) 05:15, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

A Couple Problems

To me, it seems questionable that films should be eligible for this list before at least two in the same franchise have actually been released. While a franchise will exist in the future, it doesn't exist yet. Also, what is a "fiction comedy"? That's what Monsters, Inc. is listed as, but as far as I can tell, such a description could be true for at least most of the franchises on this list, and really, any comedies that aren't based on true stories. Alphius (talk) 05:13, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

Yes it was out that long. No.2 out next mouth. So u better update it by then. It could reach the to 5 amited fanchries of all time. And the top 25 worldwide At list someone listening. After 2 completes has be made. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.98.167.114 (talk) 14:31, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

I'm saying that Finding Nemo, Despicable Me, Monsters, Inc., and Rio all really shouldn't be on here yet (and especially Rio and Finding Nemo, since Rio won't become a franchise until next year and Finding Nemo won't become one until late 2015). They could just be added later, once they actually are franchises. Alphius (talk) 01:27, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
How to Train Your Dragon is more questionable since it also has a TV show, but it still isn't a film franchise yet. Alphius (talk) 04:18, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

Other forms of animation wouldn't belong on this article, since its title says it's specifically for computer-animated film franchises, but other articles could possibly be created for other forms of animation. However, I think it might be a better idea to create a "List of highest-grossing animated film franchises" article instead, and include this table as well as tables for other forms of animation. It was deleted by IP 108.83.25.99. Soon afterwards, it was given its own article, although the new article only lists computer-animated films and does not include anime or stop-motion films.
I'm going to try to get the new "List of highest grossing computer-animated film franchises" article to include anime franchises, mostly because the Pokemon film franchise has grossed over 700 million and I believe it is unfair to exclude such a significant animated film franchise (regardless of its lessened relevance in recent years).--Mαuri’96...over the Borderline21:44, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Television adaptation

I think we should remove the Television Adaptation section, since it's not a type of animation, and it's odd that television is singled out. (Are we supposed to add sections for films adapted from books, video games, and fairy tales as well?) Anterras (talk) 00:33, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Flash isn't really a type of animation either. It's a piece of software, and this list doesn't currently differentiate based on software used (Maya, Marionette, etc). In general, Flash-animated is a subset of computer-animated. Anterras (talk) 18:16, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
Oh yeah Anime in general Traditional animation — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.101.38.140 (talk) 19:14, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
Computer, traditional, and stop-motion are all animation types, and anime is an animation style. Flash is software that can be used to create any of the above. Television adaptations can be any of them as well, so it doesn't serve as a meaningful classification. Anterras (talk) 21:43, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

I made this change, since it's been over a week without further discussion. Anterras (talk) 21:58, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

can we make List of highest grossing Stop motion animated bigger? (in short more films) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.102.93.78 (talk) 18:13, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

In my opinion, the list is already long enough, since the lowest-ranking stop-motion films have already small grosses in comparison with animes/traditionally/computer-animated films. Adding additional five or more films currently does not make sense, since most of them had earned only a "few" thousand dollars (domestic): Animation - Stop Motion@Box Office Mojo.--Carniolus (talk) 19:59, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

O.K will u do it in the future? Is there anywhere I can go to have a look at a bigger list of worldwide total for stop-motion animated films? How many more stop-motion animated films you needed to make it longer? How many do you have so far? Could animes be longer? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.102.93.78 (talk) 21:19, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
