Yes, A limited, extremely generic listing of the symbols for graphic/animated smiley's would be helpful. I found a nice, animated list here http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/misc.php?do=getsmilies&editorid=vB_Editor_001 (don't laugh at the source; it's not funny.) :-) But, since I'm not a Web designer, I had trouble finding information on whether these are relatively generic symbols that will work in many forums. Nevertheless, they are easily understood, with symbols such as  and , so they can be used in text form even if the site doesn't convert them into graphic form. I do know that they are not Java or Flash based because they work in my browser when I disable these plugins.

There are a lot of sites where you can copy and paste custom smiley's but they are not universal and have no text symbols to make them work in various forums. I am hoping the ones I linked here are universal, and we can find some more.Gggirlgeek (talk) 09:17, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

List of emoticons origination in eastern asia?

is it just me being politically correct or do i feel like that's not necessary. sure, it's an encyclopedia, but does the origin of an emoticon really matter on the internet? i'm sure at the time of it's "origination" an american kid saw it and used it at some point. i just feel anything that is strictly the internet community should be seen as a whole. the internet itself is a sort of separate "public opinion". just my two cents. i don't care enough to change it.

The Nose ^ is now occultus nostrum!

I agree with the above,... the original standards are fading. The use of the ^ (carrot) for a 3/4 view nose was very common. Examples: :^) ;^) ;^D =8^O. Gives a bit of 3D to the face, helps enhance the personal connection, and reduces the tendency to loose the emoticon in the message, but isn't shown here in any way. If you need a provenence reference, I've personally used it since my BBS message days c.1989, but it was in obvious use prior. Jopower (talk) 20:15, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

I searched for the meaning of :^) but did not find it in the list (article page) but only on this discussion page. Please add the "nose ^ emoticons" to the list on the article page. Thanks! Arnehe —Preceding unsigned comment added by Arnehe (talkcontribs) 09:48, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

"Next-generation" unicode emoticons

Hi, I found a entire new style of emoticons. They are making use of those special combined characters of some languages. That way you can combine multiple characters one one single place. Here are some examples:

٩(-̮̮̃-̃)۶
٩(●̮̮̃•̃)۶
٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶
((•̪●))
  • From someone's nickname:
santa (●̮̮̃•̃) clause (The "eyebrows" are supposed to be above the "eyes")

They don't work with every font tough.

About Japanese 2channel emoticons

Hey who removed a lot of 2ch emoticons? I used to find them here. I can't type them out without copying from here! Isn't that a function of an encyclopedia? (╯‵Д′)╯╧╧ Hermesw (talk) 18:36, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

No, actually that is not the function of an encyclopedia. I Feel Tired (talk) 01:28, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Why so few examples?

In the past there was a lot more examples of emoticons, now they have been drastically decreased. Where have every emoticon gone? This is a list article! There should be many examples in it. In the emoticon article they can be kept at a minimum. Actually the emoticon article has more examples of emoticons than this article has. As some of those before me pointed out, there are even some very common ones missing. I think we should bring back some (which were good) of the emoticons once being in this list. Is the problem that it has to be proven that they are commonly used? In that case, why don't make a new section or even a new article, containing all emoticons, even unverified (it has to be mentioned of course in the section or article title)? It is clear that many people are missing the removed ones. --Kri (talk) 22:58, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

In fact I couldn't see anything wrong in the original article. Unclear meaning of emoticons? Not to remove so many I guess? And now somebody propose to delete this article. Which rule of wikipedia is violated? Can somebody explain it to me? Listing stuff is no good? Hermesw (talk) 00:08, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Semi protecting this article

Maybe it would be a good idea to put a semi protection on it too, for preventing non-registered users from adding nonsense emoticons. --Kri (talk) 12:59, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

I think that is a good idea. Companioncube31 (talk) 21:40, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

It seems a little aseptic now.

I used to link to the "List of Common Emoticons" page to find interesting symbols. Now that there are but a half-a-dozen examples of each type, it's useless and boring - aseptic.

I took it to be about something dynamic/ changing/ alive, not stale and historic. I think someone has taken an over-zealous, pedantic approach to editing it and sucked all the life out of the subject.

MHO.9kevin9 (talk) 05:19, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

We require reliable sources and verifiability for all articles. Find citations for some of these emoticons and you're free to re-add them to the article. --MZMcBride (talk) 08:22, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
Okay, I have put together a small list of web sources that I could find.
How about those sources? Take notice: Common emoticons are probable to appear in two or more of the listed links. The links are not sorted in any specific order. --Kri (talk) 11:39, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
Actually, my addition of the standardized codes of smilies was the only possibility to make this list a relevant article of an encyclopedia. I clearly put the sources, which were all reliable (one of them was from Media Wiki, which is absolutely relevant for Wikipedia). I can not understand why you (MZMcBride) reverted it without even giving a reason.--Demoeconomist (talk) 15:49, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
Either cite the additions using reliable sources or they will continue to be removed. --MZMcBride (talk) 22:08, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Since we aren't able to have a long list....

I propose just using my user page. I used it to preserve the list when it was being considered for deletion. Companioncube31 (talk) 21:22, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Source citing

You say we have to cite all sources, well the references we have are probably wrong. Genealogy online, come on, how many emoticons can that book possibly contain? Every anonymous user who is editing this article is referreing to that source; they are guaranteed just copying and pasting some row in the first table, keeping the reference at the end of the description, especially since they are changing emoticons which are already cited from that source. This is not working out in my opinion, but you can do whatever you want to do with the article. --Kri (talk) 19:56, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

It was not aimed against anyone specific. --Kri (talk) 21:56, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Who the fcuk removed the list

While i understand all the citation and verification policy, but people are you totally BLIND? It is foolish to blindly follow rules like bunched of trained monkeys instead of actually thinking about the reasons and consequences of it. It is in order to prevent from flow of incorrect information, in case of something like list of emoticons this is totally ridiculous. Because this article is basically about list of user created content. And searching for "source" of something that you created on your own is kind of unreal.

You mark a point but I like this list. I got myself a website dedicated to the emoticons, smileys and other kaoanis (Emoticones Avenue) but they are all animated gifs, nothing like those found here. I think I might learn how to type some from this list because they are funny and when I go to an internet cafe and I can't use my msn messenger, I have nothing nice to show my mood. Now I have no excuse, just have to learn some from this list. PS: don't delete that list because at least, I know where to find it. --58.8.220.180 (talk) 04:16, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Gwengoat

Why are emoticons being deleted?

Why are 2/3 of the emoticons gone? If it's because of no sources, then why are the other un-cited emotes still up? Why does the "Emoticons" page have more emotes and the "List of Emoticons" page? Don't delete this page!

As trivial and idiotic as this topic is, it's actually very useful, since emoticons are so widely used. Given the nature of Wikipedia - and the plethora of dubious information in it - what harm is there in trivia articles that reflect something that's become so prevalent on the internet. And given the lightweight nature of the topic, it's taking the citations policy too far to demand it except in the case of facts with some gravity or controversy to them.Farawaychris (talk) 06:11, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

I don't think this page is T & I, but agree to usefullness. I get odd emots and need to look them up sometimes. Emoticons have become a very important shorthand for the vast majority of users. Further, they represent the re-entry of a pictographic lexicon to the Arabic (and related) alphabets of the World. I believe they will be solidified in all corospondence at all but the most ultra protocolic levels by the end of the 21st century, a.c.e. (i.e.: only such communications as the official invites by the Queen of England, et al., will exclude them). Emily Post, we may not be feeling your pain. ;^D Jopower (talk) 19:48, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

I disagree concerning your "dislike". I "dislike" that Man has perpetraited various and sundry holocosts upon himself and his environment, yet the facts about these events must be presented honestly and accurately. This is (supposedly) an encyclopedia and should present the facts in it's articles. African natives often go naked and Hans Christian Anderson's Mermaid doesn't wear a one piece swimsuit. That's the life and art of the World. Emoticons have their own minor annoyances to some. (I hardly wonder at your opinion of some graphic and animated emoticons availible on some internet forums). Possible vandalism

I don't know much about emoticons, but it looks like vandalism:

":-D :D 8D xD XD =D =3 <=3 <=8 laughing,[1][2] big grin,[3][4] <=3 <=8 8===D 8===B penis[1][2][3][4][5]"

Notice emoticons present in both rows and =3. And there was NONE of them in the sites that are supposed to be "sources". Please confirm and delete.

I concur, and I think it's irresponsible to lock the page due to vandalism without removing the vandalism. --72.34.180.28 (talk) 18:51, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

;( Debate on whether angry or sad / crying ... Sad / wink.

I have seen references unfortunately however from commonly stated non-credible sources that the ;( emoticon is often seen as a sad crying / sad winking face opposed to an angry faced emoticon as shown in the article. Nor however have I seen reference to the face being that of an angry emoticon and as use and context of these emoticons deem their use and meaning it is rather subjective and difficult to determine in some cases their true meaning. In that case... Should the emoticon be either i) Removed from angry to sad to crying (Such as ;*( which is very similar), or ii) Be used in both. I also pose that a poll on a well known and public polling website may be entered as to determine public opinion on the use of the face. --D Namtar 02:27, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

It would also be beneficial to reference commonly used emoticons on popular chat software and facebook, and discuss the differences. Some emoticons have also found their way into business applications such as Microsoft Word and their usage should also be listed here.

The upside-down U shapes are closed eyes, but in a happy, anime-like fashion. The _ calls to mind a slight smile when combined with the happy eyes. List cleanup

Checked the refs in the list and took out non-reliable ones and removed all unsourced emoticons. Some formatting necessarily followed, such as removing the 2chan section. I also took out the uses of {{main}}, as they all went to the same article which is linked in the lede. The reference removals were made separately in case something needs to be reverted, but now that I think about it, it's not very helpful since the emoticon deletion was all in one go. Oh well. Anyway, I think all additions to this list should be accompanied by a reliable source from now on.

If there's interest, I feel good about getting rid of most of the sources I left in too, since they're all simple lists themselves with no claim to notability for individual emoticons. I don't think being on a list of hundreds of emoticons qualifies any single emoticon as notable, but I'll refrain from going so far on my own. Cheers, — Bility (talk) 10:17, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

Let's remember that notability does not apply to article content: WP:NNC.
--Qwerty0 (talk) 02:25, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
All you did was ruin the page. If 2chan (the single biggest representation of Eastern internet culture) isn't a reliable source, I don't know what is. --Rntebsdfhssdeda (talk) 18:39, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
The page is silly to begin with. 2chan is user-generated content where anyone can say anything. Pretty much the definition of "unreliable". — Bility (talk) 16:50, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
I agree that 2chan's user-generated contents are not reliable, but commonly used emoticons in these contents ARE widely accepted. They should be considered as reliable. We don't always need an "official emoticon list" to be reliable and perhaps we can never have one. --Soimort (talk) 17:33, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
Since the inception of this list (as "List of common emoticons") there has been a worry over original research, as this list in particular is ripe for it. Sourcing the emoticons in the list ensures that we're reporting on actual, documented information, not new inventions. I disagree that the list can't or shouldn't be reliable; I believe it's a policy that everything on the wiki be verifiable as the minimum threshold for inclusion. — Bility (talk) 18:48, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

Bility - in principle you are correct. There is no reliable citation which will fulfill your need for verification. As you have already mentioned, ALL of the citations are inherently unreliable (they're just subjective online lists). If you truly cared about this issue, you would have deleted the whole page, because a "List of Emoticons" page without any actual emoticons is pretty useless. ALTERNATIVELY...you could just ease up a little bit and allow this extremely relevant and useful page to continue to exist. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.191.93.70 (talk) 23:47, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

Considering that it has survived two attempted deletions, there appears to be a consensus that the list should be around, so I didn't take it to WP:AFD. I did want to clean it up though, as it seems to have been bloated with original content and emoticons from unreliable sources. Unfortunately, without good sourcing it's hard to say which emoticons should and shouldn't be included, hence why they were removed. If these emoticons are very common, then they should show up on a reliable list somewhere, right? Just provide the sources and I'll put them in. — Bility (talk) 00:01, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

There is absolutely no reason why this article should be the exception to Wikipedia policies and guidelines. There has to significant coverage from reliable sources for every thing in this article for it to stay. That people use any of these emoticons in the wild is interesting and deserves to be catalogued but that's not Wikipedia's purpose, it is here to provided encyclopedic content based on the research that other people have done. As it stands now, anyone can add an emoticon which violates the guideline on original research among other problems. SQGibbon (talk) 00:43, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

Here is a small sample of scholarly articles related to emoticons (I've looked at many, but there's no need to link them all): http://www.microlearning.org/ml_files/azuma_maurer_pa_proceedings_2007_final.pdf http://ceres.imt.uwm.edu/cipr/image/409.pdf http://www.ohio.edu/visualliteracy/JVL_ISSUE_ARCHIVES/JVL18(2)/JVL18(2)_pp.201-215.pdf http://delivery.acm.org/10.1145/1560000/1557809/p133-yang.pdf?ip=85.191.93.70&acc=OPEN&CFID=75330338&CFTOKEN=38618066&__acm__=1324951367_e6bb46bcc1d4436cc31d5e42aae66885 You will find that they either 1) do not reference the source of their emoticon list, 2) reference the same unreliable subjective web lists that are currently the source for this article (or, hilariously, reference the wikipedia emoticon list) or 3) generate an unfathomably small dataset compared to the extremely wide domain of emoticons (in this particular case some listserv communications from the spring of 1994). This is because there is no scholarly list of emoticons for them (or us) to use. Which means that we can 1) have a large, useful, questionably generated list, 2) continue with the current small, virtually useless and (as Bility mentioned) still questionably generated list or 3) delete the article. I personally think options 1 and 3 are valid and defendable. I think option 2 is completely pointless. As the article stands now, it still violates all of the rules that the previous list did but only provides about 1/100th the value. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.191.93.70 (talk) 03:03, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

First of all, I don't think "usefulness" has much meaning on Wikipeida, since it's subjective. I personally find the list totally useless, but that's an opinion, which is why we use notability and verifiability instead. From what I can tell, the list inherits the notability for inclusion of its subject article and anything that can be verified can be added. So I don't think deletion is the way to go. I would suggest a fourth option, which is to fill the list up with verifiable emoticons so it can be "useful" and still comply with the verifiability policy. — Bility (talk) 08:59, 27 December 2011 (UTC)
To IP 85.191.93.70, I looked through the links you've provided (thanks!) but I don't see anything to be added. The first link cites this very list as the source of its East Asian emoticons and the other ones it uses are from a blog. The rest of the links have emoticons that are already on the list. EDIT: Ahh, just reread your post and see that you already said all that, sorry. — Bility (talk) 17:32, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

I added some Asian emoticons back in, but need help with the meanings. So if anyone knows what they mean or if we need to combine/split apart some of them, that would be helpful. Thanks, — Bility (talk) 18:38, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

Why did you delete all of the 2channel emoticons? This is ridiculous. You ask for a 'source' when the source is 2channel itself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.51.20.63 (talk) 01:11, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

This is not a 2channel wiki—we record information that is notable to the world, not a small subsection of the internet. All the 2chan emoticons are in a thread linked from the sidebar of that site, by the way. — Bility (talk) 17:03, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
Please read WP:NNC. .froth. (talk) 07:37, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, my point was about undue weight, not notability, I should have been clearer. Having a section for 2chan emoticons would give the impression that they're as important to the world as

Western or Eastern emoticons, when really they're a very small subset of the latter. Anyway, the main problem is whether they're sourced. I don't think anyone has a problem putting any emoticons they use on 2channel in the list as long as they're properly sourced. — Bility (talk) 10:03, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Oh please, you're not going to be able to find reliable sources for such a phenomenon. The western ones are old and could be sourced, but you need to be more flexible about the 2channel emots. This is clearly a situation of "we know it when we see it." A little text image conveying an emotion/sentiment is prima facie an emoticon and should be included in a list of emoticons. We don't need a neutral source to tell us "yes this looks like a face and conveys an emotion or sentiment." .froth. (talk) 06:27, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
We don't need a source to tell us it looks like a face, we need a source to include it in the list. You seem to be advocating using original research, at least on this list (when you say "you need to be more flexible about the 2channel emots."), but that's not how the wiki works. Also, please don't use {{edit semi-protected}} for participation in normal talk page discussions, that's not its purpose. Thanks, — Bility (talk) 10:25, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Looks good, thanks for finding this! I'm putting it in the Western section, but let me know if it should be on the other section. — Bility (talk) 10:06, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

"Sources"?!?!?!?!?

Smileys are used in conversation between friends / in a chatroom. How can you show a "reliable" source then? A screenshot of 2 japanese friends or what? I've seen MANY of the smilies used all over the internet, adapted by the western community aswell, in particular Flipping the Table http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/flipping-tables-%E2%95%AF%E2%96%A1%EF%BC%89%E2%95%AF%EF%B8%B5-%E2%94%BB%E2%94%81%E2%94%BB , Look of Disapproval http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/%E0%B2%A0%E0%B2%A0-look-of-disapproval and many more

That cut was uneeded for the most part. The only things I've never seen is the "typically german" etc because that's more of an "ascii art" picture then a smiley. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.197.122.200 (talk) 22:54, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

I concur, there is no reason to remove commonly accepted emoticons from this list. Following this ultra strict adherence to the rules would require the whole page be removed, and this abuse of guidelines is trolling. jschleappi 16:45, 27 December 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jacobcia (talkcontribs)
We need some sort of standard to prevent anyone from inserting random garbage. A "reliable" source would be a secondary source mentioning people using particular emoticons. Ideally it would be news media, academic research, a book, or a reliable website. Self-published lists of emoticons shouldn't be considered reliable sources. I'm not well familiar with the knowyourmeme website, but it seems to be a perfect case-study. It looks like it's open for anyone to submit anything, therefor arbitrary entries should not be considered reliable. However it also appears the website has some sort of process for tagging acceptable entries as "Status:Confirmed". Knowyourmeme may qualify a low-end reliable source making the second-party statement that people use specific emoticons. If I understand the site correctly, "Status: Confirmed" entries should probably be acceptable. Alsee (talk) 17:20, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

Yes, sources and/or proofs are needed not just because this is a Wikipedia policy but because this is the only way to make this article useful. The fact that YellowKitty13 has once used a particular combination of characters in a chatroom on 17th of November, 2007, doesn't turn this combination into an emoticon, even if the same combination was used, with possibly similar meaning, by RandomHacker666, on 2th of February, 2011. I would say that MOST of this list is actually garbage, and only a small subset of it are actually used. Because this is my impression of how emoticons are used, could I legitimately delete most of this list?

For example, of the "happy faces" >:] :-) :) :o) :] :3 :c) :> =] 8) =) :} :^) -- only :-) and :) are used (in my opinion),  :] means "I'm feeling robotic" and :o) means "I'm a piggy", :> mean "yak yak", 8) means "sunglasses", and the rest mean "I'm addicted to old-fashioned chatrooms, can't you see". The only way to clear up this list is refer to some sources or even doing some original research (although original research is not allowed by Wikipedia policy). In addition, many categories here do not refer to "textual portrayals of a writer's mood or facial expression in the form of icons". Octopus and snake are neither moods nor facial expressions.

However, emoticons have been used for quite a long time, so there must be some research done on them. In linguistics or some similar field. For example, I checked www.sciencedirect.com, and there are 132 scientific papers saying something on emoticons. The references in this article are not reliable sources but just random webpages reflecting their creators' opinions and nothing more -- but some of them are better than nothing.

It would also be useful to mark the emoticons as to how common they are and whether they are generally used (so that one can expect more or less everyone to understand without a need to go back to this list) or known only by some groups. My impression is that only :) :-) ;-) :P :( :-( :b :D 8-) are generally known, maybe a few more, and anything beyond that is a matter of improvisation. This may be different in other cultures, e.g. Japanese chatrooms that I know nothing about.

Considering that most of this list is already garbage, why not let anyone add what they want? Or else, check out the REALLY reliable sources (not just random lists that anyone can put on the internet) and delete the garbage. Alternatively, experts of Korean or Malaysian or Japanese or whatever emoticons could create their own lists.

Lebatsnok (talk) 14:46, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

If you think any of the sources on the list are unreliable, of course you're free to remove them and any emoticons sourced to them I've gone through all of them and found them reliable however, so discussing it first would be nice. I agree it would be good to add how common they are, but it's hard enough finding reliable sources that they exist, let alone which are the most prevalent. As for the "garbage" I think I've gotten rid of any random lists that anyone can put on the internet. Maybe if you were more specific about which sources you find objectionable I could give a better answer, sorry. — Bility (talk) 18:07, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

Reliable sources or not?

I noticed a substantial number of emoticons were removed under the claim that they weren't reliable sourced. By the very nature of emoticons, they may not be sourced by a reputable source, so having a link to prove they're used should suffice. I also question the opening sentence - "This is a list of notable and commonly used emoticons or textual portrayals of a writer's mood or facial expression in the form of icons." The title of the article isn't "List of commonly used emoticons". I understand removing the ones that don't have any sources at all, but if there is a source to prove they're used, what is wrong with using them? I don't exactly expect there to be high-quality sources on a variety of emoticons, and limiting the article to ones that are in high-quality journals and the Wall Street Journal wouldn't exactly be representative of the topic. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:37, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

I agree with your thoughts on the opening sentence of the article—perhaps you can fix it to more accurately represent the information found on this list? As for the sources, we're trying to avoid original research. If we use your criterion, I can go post anything I can think up on an anonymous imageboard, then link to it and put it on the list. Although anyone can then remove that content as "not widely used" or "made up one day", then we're in the position of constantly arguing over what are "real" or "popular" emoticons. So hopefully you can understand why it is necessary to use reliable sources to make these inclusion decisions. Yes this means some emoticons won't make it onto the list, but it also means whatever is on the list shouldn't be controversial. — Bility (talk) 21:52, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
But as you can see above, the list has proven controversial. There are only so many variations on :) and º_º Should we call it a dynamic list or something? --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:03, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
The removals were controversial I guess, but no one is arguing about the verifiability of the emoticons that are on the list right now. By dynamic do you mean emoticons will continually be added? Maybe a note about new emoticons constantly being created so the list will never be complete? — Bility (talk) 22:22, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
Well, yea. It's dynamic as long as there can be a reliable source, so it may never be complete. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:47, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
Sounds good to me. Bility (talk) 01:18, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
