Script errors

[edit]

This article keeps appearing in Category:Pages with script errors because the templates try to do too much work, and the allowed Lua time expires (the limit is 10 seconds). I have done a couple of massive edits to use a function in Module:Biglist as an experiment. One benefit of the new function is that the wikitext is simpler because the temperature value does not need to be duplicated.

The edit replaced lines like the first of the following with the second:

| style="{{Weather box/cols|183.0 }};"|183.0
| {{#invoke:biglist|weatherboxcols|183.0}}

The weatherboxcols function accepts one or two parameters. The first parameter determines the color. The value displayed is the second parameter (if not empty), or is the first parameter.

Searching the html source of the article for "NewPP" shows these results:

Parameter Before edit After edit Unit
CPU time usage 17.589 4.441 seconds
Real time usage 17.861 4.569 seconds
Preprocessor visited node count 420034/1000000 23003/1000000
Post‐expand include size 812162/2097152 396126/2097152 bytes
Template argument size 402825/2097152 851/2097152 bytes
Highest expansion depth 12/40 10/40
Expensive parser function count 3/500 2/500
Lua time usage 9.278/10.000 2.888/10.000 seconds
Lua memory usage 3.93 3.96 MB/50 MB

It would be possible to enhance the syntax of the wikitext so, for example, the Jan–Dec–Year values in each row are entered in a single row with spaces between each item. If that happened, there could be a template with a decent name rather than the #invoke shown above. That can happen later, if wanted.

@JohnBlackburne: I think you were trying to fix the script errors so I am pinging FYI. Johnuniq (talk) 10:57, 27 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good to me. It kept appearing in the category, often as the only article doing so. Purging the page would temporarily fix it but a permanent fix is much better. Making the wikitext cleaner and simpler would be good too, but fixing the performance is far more important, not only to stop the errors but to make it easier to edit.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 12:07, 27 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Variation of detection count causing erroneous comparison

[edit]

Different countries use different devices to measure sunshine duration

https://doi.org/10.1007/s00704-014-1125-z Thus one could not compare one sunshine count to another. Meirfishman (talk) 16:01, 16 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Criticism sof Europe sextion

[edit]

The entire section looks like bulIshit. It simply cannot be that Sarajevo which is located in Southeastern Europe gets less sun than Minsk. And it also cannot be that Tallinn, a smug northern city way to the north from Minsk gets more sunshine than Minsk. Look up Tallinn photos, they are not fancy and sunny at all.

Stockholm also cannot be just barely below Minsk in sunshine hours, because that's a cold northern city where sun is rarity.

It looks to me that the reason for this atrocity of a section is link amalgamation. Different (and variously biased) sources were used to compile the table, and that's wrong because quantitative tabular data is only useful within a context of single research effort. If you compile numerical data from different sources you'll get chimaera like this table.

I have no obvious solution to this. Maybe this table shouldnt be in Wikipedia at all after all because its compilational nature borders on OR. I just want to warn people who look at this table for pragmatic reasons: take it with a huge grain of salt and dont trust it. Visit the cities and countries you look to live in and judge with your own eyes instead. 178.121.39.90 (talk) 19:06, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect there are large issues in general with measurement differences across countries, an example that stood out to me was Taipei, Taiwan has less sunshine than London, United Kingdom. I found a source for the data from Taiwan so the issue isn't improper sourcing which leads me to think it is measurement differences. 129.105.62.170 (talk) 16:52, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Undoubtedly in such a large list there might be errors; but all of the issues presented here are perfectly normal and expected; reporting differences can cause differences, but generally not to this extent.
Northern does not equal more cloudy (in many cases cloudiness peaks at the middle of the mid-latitudes), and fog is an important factor limiting sunshine as well as 'regular cloudiness'.
Sarajevo is an inland city with a lot of winter fog; Talinn is rain-(cloud?)shadowed slightly by the mountain ranges in Norway, Minsk is not and is on the European Plain.
Taipei is a foggy city, so its sunshine is limited much like a city like Lima (though the two cities are in very different contexts; they are united by frequent fog). Compare Taichung, which is not foggy. Uness232 (talk) 21:58, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Importance of sunshine on well-beingness and social interactions factors

[edit]

It is known that sunlight help with better mood and health (not only Vit.D) and foster people going out and engaging with other people (friends or strangers) at parks, publics pools, beaches, street strolls, sports, etc. It should be mentioned and expanded upon

Sub-articles

[edit]

The template message says it’s better to create sub-articles because this one may be too long.

We have one for Europe right now. I was thinking wether it is a good idea to have articles for Asia and/or Africa as well.PAper GOL (talk) 08:41, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
