References

[edit]

Most of the awards listed here are verified by this ANC website. I do not think it is too much to ask that new entries should be backed by references. We should also strive to find references for the recent awards. A more stringient stance towards unreferenced additions is warranted, or we'll soon end up with a tangled web. --Ezeu 05:30, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think the page is still thin on references. most of there things are not common sense or reasonable to deduce. I would suggest that every award has a citation to prove it, not just a few of them.Melquiades Babilonia (talk) 03:39, 15 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you, so I added a refimprove tag.--HCPUNXKID 14:18, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sandcastle award at Brighton Beach, Little Timmy Taylor, aged 6 came second

[edit]

Is anybody watching this page? This piece of vandalism sat here for about 24 days before I removed it. It claimed Mandela had won a 'best sandcastle' award for his sandcastle at Brighton beach, and that a 6 year-old called 'Timmy Taylor' had won 2nd prize. It strikes me as odd that a retired 70 year old from South Africa won a sandcastle-building award in England, beating a 6 year-old. A simple google revealed no such event ever took place. A simple google for "Timmy Taylor" and "Nelson Mandela" proves this was a complete fabrication.
My point is, I'm adding this to my watchlist.

Eight UK degrees

[edit]

In case anyone is wondering... I have listed the eight universities in the order in which the degrees were conferred, which was also the order in which the universities were created - hence Oxford first, then Cambridge, etc. I have only listed the degree when it is known which degree was conferred. The LSE degree was a degree of the University of London but was awarded by the LSE. It is wrong to speak of the University of De Montfort or of Glasgow Caledonian. I have had to deal with the Oxford degree separately because it is not an honorary degree. It may seem like one, but it isn't. Degrees of Divinity and Medicine were also once conferred by diploma but these days it is only the DCL and it is apparently conferred only on heads of state and the chancellor of the university.--Oxonian2006 (talk) 17:06, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Postnominals

[edit]

Does anyone know Mandela's full postnominals, including all degrees? I would presume that if he wanted to put them on a business card he'd need a rather large one! Timrollpickering (talk) 22:48, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bestowed upon?

[edit]

Should this really have such a complicated name? Why not name it the same as all the other lists of awards: List of accolades received by Nelson Mandela? That Ole Cheesy Dude (Talk to the hand!) 07:30, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Notable enough?

[edit]

There are two species of spider, at least that I am aware of, named after Mandela: Stasimopus mandelai (named in 2004), and Anelosimus nelsoni (named in 2006). Should these be included in the list? --TeaDrinker (talk) 01:39, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I added one of them from the main article. I agree that the other should be included, too. -- Khazar2 (talk) 20:01, 3 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Summary of his Orders?

[edit]

What are the criteria for duplication of a small set of the awards into the Summary of his Orders section? At first, it seemed like it was only things with the word "order" in them, but there are exceptions. Is the section necessary? Why not just add the ribbons to the by-date listings above? —[AlanM1(talk)]— 01:31, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

summary of his orders

[edit]

In the last part of the page it states that he was rewarded 'Knight of the Order of the Gold Lion of the House of Nassau' and that that is from Luxembourg. The order, however is from both Luxembourg and the Netherlands, as one can see if one follows the link to the wiki page of the medal.... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.208.66.53 (talk) 10:48, 25 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
