Other institutions
[edit]Currently this list lists only those autonomous institutions recognised as such by the Department of higher education (DHE), but as experience at List of universities in India shows, there are a lot of other institutes too, with governmental backing, awarding degrees and acting as autonomous institutes under other departments. I think that even though they aren't recognised by the DHE, the fact that they function as autonomous institutes under some other governmental department should be enough to consider them as autonomous. We could/should probably list them too here. Some of these can be found in:
We should also note that other non-governmental institutions also exist which grant degrees without any government certification/affiliation/accreditation. Example: Dnyaneshwar Vidyapeeth
So we need to come up with groundrules on how to decide which institutions to include and which not to include. We could do this in various ways, two of which can be the following:
- First way: consider any government supported institution awarding its own degrees and not listed by the UGC, as an autonomous institution and list it here as such. Consider private institutions on a case-by-case basis.
- Second way: consider all such institutions on a case-by-case basis.
- Third way: consider all such institutions to be autonomous.
I would prefer the first since the second would be too tiresome and the third would be chaotic with no essence of the original intent left in the article.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 20:39, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
- I don't think your assessment is entirely accurate. The article is already not limited to institutions recognised by the DHE, see "Another group of institutes are the Agricultural Universities". I think the process that we used at Talk:List of universities in India worked rather well and had de facto consensus. If I try to lay it down explicitly:
- List only institutes that grant higher education degrees, though we agreed to the exception of IIMs due to prominence.
- Institutes which are already covered by List of universities in India should not be listed (e.g. some Agricultural Universities).
- Institutes which are listed by the UGC as affiliated to an institute in List of universities in India should not be listed (e.g. NISER and Serampore).
- All other institutes are considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Personally, I think we can open for discussions some groups which we agreed not to include, first due to WP:CCC, but especially as we can afford be much more lenient now that these are not called "universities". --Muhandes (talk) 09:02, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
- I don't think your assessment is entirely accurate.: You're right! I forgot the list already contains ICAR universities.
- Agree on points one and two, not sure what implications point three has, so leaving that for now. Definitely agree on point four.
- See this discussion and this discussion for examples of the third rule. --Muhandes (talk) 17:50, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
Starting the discussion, I think we should add National Institute of Fashion Technology since it is listed at Ministry of Textiles (India)(possible source) to be an autonomous body under it.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 16:48, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
- With your permission, it would be easier to comment in a separate section so I made it so.
- I have found a source which I believe resolved the issue of NIFT and some other institutes. See this document, page 9 table 1. They are talking "611 universities and university-level institutions", which introduces the term "university-level institutions". These institutes include "Institutes of National Importance plus Other Institutes". In turn, "Other Institutes include Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) (5), National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) and Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER)". We already list the IISERs, and it is clear to me we should include these three institutes, as well as any other INIs which is not listed, that is:
- National Institute of Fashion Technology
Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technologyadded- Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research
- All India Institute of Medical Sciences
- Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha
- Indian Statistical Institute
- National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research
National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscienceslisted at List of deemed universities- Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research
- Sree Chitra Thirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology
- Sorry for the late response. Great work in finding the institute list!
- Agree on all except the following:
- Indian Statistical Institute:Its wikipedia article says it was declared an INI as well as a deemed university.
- National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences:Its wikipedia article says, "On 14 November 1994, NIMHANS was declared a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 (3 of 1956)."
- Even though the UGC doesn't list them on its website list, we should check these up before including them here, because if they are indeed deemed universities, they should go into List of deemed universities and not here.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 11:41, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
- Oops, indeed National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences is a deemed university, I stroke it out. As for Indian Statistical Institute, while the article makes this claim, their website does not, not even in the RTI section. Add that to the fact that they are not listed by the UGC, and I think we can be quite certain they are not a deemed university. Perhaps they are included by some other institute and the editor who claimed that they are deemed at the article did not understand this? I cannot say. --Muhandes (talk) 18:11, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

MHRD update
[edit]The MHRD has updated their website and the new format may be relevant. I have added an archived version for one page which was cited. The relevant new page is this one. I have not given it a thorough read yet. This sub page may also be relevant.--Muhandes (talk) 19:15, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
- Per the updated page's subpage, leaving out the deemed universities, we have the following new entries:
- National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai
- National Institute of Foundry and Forge Technology, Ranchi
School of Planning and Architecture, BhopaladdedSchool of Planning and Architecture, Vijayawadaadded- Central Institute of Technology, Kokrajhar
- MHRD lists the NITTTRs among the MHRD funded technical institutions but does not call them autonomous. However, it seems they do function independently and offer degrees too. These include the following and could be listed:
- NITTTR, Chandigarh
- NITTTR, Kolkata
- NITTTR, Chennai
- NITTTR, Bhopal
- --Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 21:32, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
- I have no objection. --Muhandes (talk) 14:30, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
Need proper secondary sources
[edit]It appears that the majority, if not all, the sources are simply the institutional web sites, which is inappropriate. Including each organization's web site here violates Wikipedia policy per link farm and directory. A good secondary source would be a service that tracks higher education institutions in India similar to the The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (http://classifications.carnegiefoundation.org/lookup_listings/institution.php) which is what is used in most of the articles in Category:Lists of universities and colleges by U.S. state. Perhaps the University Grants Commission would serve. Jojalozzo 17:38, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences is an autonomous institute. Shouldn't that be added here? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vedaj89 (talk • contribs) 20:41, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
