Would it be a good idea to list the sources where we found that these people are Old Sydneians under a references heading? Just an idea. If this page is put together well enough it may well be worth considering nominating it for a featured list. --mdmanser 08:47, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's always a good idea to list sources for any page on Wikipedia. It is the only way our work can be considered as reliable as Brittanica etc. There are some good books about SGS that refer to famous old boys. There's even one just for those who fought in WWI and WWII called College Street Heroes according to my knowledge. GizzaChat © 12:43, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I've heard of those, and that's probably a start. But I know there's a long list at Cricket.com.au. Would that be a reliable source if it was to be included under references during an RFA?. --mdmanser 13:24, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If the notable OS's mentioned are cricketers, then I am sure it is. GizzaChat © 07:04, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted "Michael Faulkner, The largest water bed and lava lamp salesman in Surrey, UK" from the politics and law section.

[edit]

I'm making an effort to reference each person with a link stating that they were educated at Sydney Grammar School. This is so that the article is more credible, and helps push it towards a featured list nomination. I do, however, feel that there are a few things that may prevent this list from ever getting featured:

  • The list is very "point of view". What defines "famous." There are hundreds of possible candidates to get on this page if we simply go by a weak definition. We need to have some sort of qualification system for including people on here, such as an existing Wikipedia entry or a biography on another internet page.
  • The layout is poor - should we make the list in the form of a table and include a column stating when that person attended Grammar?
  • Perhaps we should change the page title to "notable" rather than "famous."

Any opinions? --mdmanser 05:13, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Notable is a better word. Simon Hannes in the business section for example, is infamous not famous since he's a criminal. For notability, anyone with a Wiki page and/or can be supported with refs and will page WP:BIO. If someone can pass WP:BIO but doesn't have a page yet, we will create it, hopefully good enough to be a DYK. GizzaChat © 07:52, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Australian Dictionary of Biography Online

[edit]

Whilst I went through referencing as many names as I could, I kept on coming across ADB Online a lot. At first I thought that some editor must have used this site as a start to add people onto this page, but when I did a search on for "Sydney Grammar School" on that site, I was astonished that 1077 names came up. Does everybody think that perhaps we could expand this article much more with perhaps "less significant" names in order to reach a list rivalling that of List of Dartmouth College alumni which is a featured list? It could be argued, however, that those people are listed on that biography site for a reason, and are certainly somewhat notable at least. --mdmanser 05:05, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps if the 1077 names appear in at least a few more sites or books, then they all should be notable. That featured list has an interesting format. I am guessing that the "class year" is the year they finished their education, or is it when they entered? GizzaChat © 06:55, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm guessing that's the year they graduated from Dartmouth. We could probably use that for this one too (just look up old Sydneian books from the library). One name that confuses me a bit is "James Fairfax". On that site they have about half a dozen entries about supposedly different people. A number of them said that they attended Grammar but which of the James Fairfax contingent are the most notable?
Also, would it be a good idea to put picture thumbnails of each person (if available) if we were to use a table, similar to Australian national cricket captains? That allows us to fill up the spaces from the "field" column with a much more in-depth summary of each individual's life and achievements. It could also allow us to narrow down what defines "famous". My only conern here is about the page getting too long. --mdmanser 07:09, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There are less restrictions in article size when it is a list. WP:WIAFL doesn't specifically mention size. Perhaps we can ask at Wikipedia talk:Featured lists if size is ever an issue. GizzaChat © 04:48, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The source given for Edward Barton, first PM of Australia is from Cricinfo, because he was an umpire at first-class level! There must be a better source. GizzaChat © 23:41, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think we should try to avoid sourcing ADB as much as possible, not because it isn't valid but that we should try to stop relying on one website. If there are two online refs for someone famous who went to Grammar and one is ADB, use the other. GizzaChat © 00:27, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Are the 26 of them notable enough to be listed, or at least some? GizzaChat © 03:10, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely. I had a look at that website yesterday and thought about adding them in.
Also, in response to your query about the pictures, I was thinking that each section could probably get a short three or four lines introduction, in which we could also slot in a picture. Perhaps each section introduction could go into a bit more depth about how some of those people in that section have been acknowledged at school, such as the AB Banjo Paterson Library and the Edmund Barton Room. I think that adding text to the body of the page is very important to add to both the appeal and usefulness of the article as a whole. --mdmanser 04:19, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you completely. On List of Dartmouth College alumni, if you assume each alumnus has on average one reference, they have around 256 notable students. This list has a little over half of the students referenced, which means there are around 80 here. So we still have plenty more to add. GizzaChat © 04:39, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Class years

I doubt if we can this info online. We'll need some books. GizzaChat © 04:18, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Post-election changes

[edit]

Current Attorney General of New South Wales Bob Debus and Shadow Attorney General Andrew Tink were teacher and student at SGS, respectively.

Unfortunately no longer. Debus is moving onto federal politics, Tink has retired from politics.

Extraordinary Brothers

[edit]

Any old Sydneian with school information (or ideally a photo !!) of Clarrie Wallach or any of this extraordinary family of six Sydeneian brothers who all fought in WWI ? Add to the article or talk to me. -Sticks66 12:11, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
