Pendency???

[edit]

This page says, again and again, that "X was traded during the pendency of the 1956-77 season and contested y games for the XXX and z games for the YYY."

Now, I looked up "pendency," and it means "during the time something is pending." But what seems to be the case here is that what is meant is "during the season," not "while the season was pending." And what's up with "contested"? How about "played"? GeneCallahan (talk) 13:45, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The usage of the words "pendency" and "contested" was introduced at the article's inception by editor User:Jahiegel. It is also prevalent in the articles List of National Basketball Association career rebounding leaders, List of National Basketball Association career assists leaders, and List of National Basketball Association career steals leaders (also created by User:Jahiegel). I would be fine with changing the wording. — Myasuda (talk) 14:40, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Started making the changes, as well as replacing "styled as" with "named." "Pendency" was just plain wrong, and the other two are non-idiomatic. GeneCallahan (talk) 07:01, 13 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Change Colors

[edit]

A chart with dark yellow and slightly less dark yellow is no good.

Field goals

[edit]

Some editors have been erroneously replacing the two-point field goals made in the two-point field goal column with the total number of field goals made by the player. Editors should be careful to avoid this error. To get the number of two-point field goals made, just subtract the number of three-pointers from total field goals. --JamesAM (talk) 15:55, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kobe

[edit]

The page has some major problems. Namely, it lists Kobe Bryant as #1 on the list when he is nowhere near #1 as of current date. Further, Kobe is listed later on down the list as #21. As of today he is #19. Either way he should not be on the list twice. I would fix this but I am not familiar with the editing of tables and I do not want to screw the page up.--CooliLowe (talk) 04:15, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bill Laimbeer

[edit]

Laimbeer is'nt even mentioned on the list even though he is #2 all time with 13,790 points accoring to http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/laimbbi01.html. i would fix the article but i am also table-retarded.

I don't know what you saw there, but the above was not there. It must have been a lot time ago he was even in top50 since he is now a little over 5,000 points short of it. Of course in ABA he would have been #1 because the leader has only 13,726 points but you said #2, so it doesn't fit there either. 85.217.36.71 (talk) 01:52, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Julius Erving

[edit]

This list is missing Julius Erving. His total career points is 30,026 which would set him at number 5. I'm unable to correct this. 11:37, 07 November 2010 unregistered.

Julius Erving is not included because this is for all-time scoring leaders in ONLY the NBA. Erving's 30,026 was ABA + NBA. His NBA points were 18,364. ABA figures are not included in NBA. --Coulraphobic123 (talk) 20:03, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Total years

[edit]

I would appreciate a new column "Total years" right after "Team(s) played for (years)". The rank and Position columns can be narrowed down a bit. What do you think? Thanks Kvsh5 (talk) 12:24, 24 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's something I'll definitely think about. The only thing about it is that the number of years played doesn't really have any impact on or association with the stats themselves (whereas field goals, 3s, free throws, total points, games played, etc. all do). I suppose the position doesn't have anything to do with the stats either, though, so it's something I'll consider. I'd have to do the same for the other regular season career stats lists if I were to do so. Also, I think the placing of a "total years" column would fit best by the "total games played" column simply because those two seem to be more tied in with one another. I guess another thing I could do is in the "teams played for" column after each team entry, I could put in parentheses the number of games they played for during their tenure with that team and seasons...a lot of possibilities there! Coulraphobic123 (talk) 01:21, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Great - thanks.. I still think the "total years" fits best after the listing of the years played, but do what you think is best :-) Kvsh5 (talk) 12:09, 28 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Playoff Points

[edit]

I notice that there are players on this list that have been scoring points in the 2012 NBA playoffs the past few days, but these points have not been added to this list. This article does specify that it is for regular season points only, but there are other career scoring lists on the Internet that do not make this distinction and are not updating their numbers to include points scoring during the current playoffs. So the question is: Do points scored in the playoffs not count toward career totals for some reason?
--Cogniac (talk) 14:09, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The very first line of this article specifically states that this is for regular season points only. To see a list of playoff points leaders go to List of National Basketball Association career playoff scoring leaders‎. Coulraphobic123 (talk) 22:51, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Your response is downright offensive. It's blatantly obvious that you didn't even read what I wrote before calling me an idiot. "...This article does specify that it is for regular season points only..." Right from my paragraph directly above. I did not ask for a list of career playoff scoring leaders. I asked why playoff points seemingly are not considered part of a player's career point total.
--Cogniac (talk) 18:42, 2 May 2012 UTC)
Please assume good faith. He didn't call you an idiot from what I can see. He probably responded without fully reading your question. As for your question, the NBA often lists regular season stats separately from playoffs stats. We are just following that.—Chris!c/t 20:39, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I was in no way insinuating you were an idiot or trying to give off that vibe. The problem is that I read what you wrote as "this article doesn't specify" instead of "this article does specify" and I wanted to point out that the first line of the article states that. I didn't mean to be offensive...and please don't put words in my mouth either. At least the question is answered and solved. Coulraphobic123 (talk) 22:50, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Leading average

[edit]

Jordan & Chamberlain are each listed at 30.1 PPG, the highest career values of any players. I wanted to know who was really #1--as I'm sure others would--and would like to provide these values in the table as 30.12 and 30.07, respectively, as is done on some other stats pages. Is this okay with the community? Matchups 01:06, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The reason why they aren't rounded to the hundredths is in keeping with the format of significant figures which is used in statistics. If those two were to be rounded to the nearest hundredth, then so would all other scoring averages in that table, and since scoring stats are almost always just rounded to the nearest tenth, that's why they both remain at 30.1. Coulraphobic123 (talk) 05:55, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This isn't really a "significant digits" issue: we know exactly how many points each scored, and exactly how many games they played. All digits we could possibly calculate are significant. But if we just want to round to 1, that is fine. GeneCallahan (talk) 01:01, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Field goal percentage

[edit]

Hey guys, is it possible to add a field goal percentage to this list? The 3-point scoring leaders and the free throw scoring leaders both have a percentage column.

I'd be glad to add it if it's OK with the mods Hexxagonn (talk) 19:49, 29 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Progressive lists

[edit]

@Spparky: (there might be others who contributed here too) I like the concept of the progression lists, but everything but the career points progression seems irrelevant to this page. Have you considered moving these to a dedicated progression page on general scoring records? There is precedent in other sports/non-sports domains at Category:Record progressions.—Bagumba (talk) 01:58, 17 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Bagumba: Please feel free to make any changes you feel are appropriate. Spparky (talk) 10:23, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Extra column

[edit]

What is the purpose of the second column in the first table? It seems to be completely empty. TdanTce (talk) 04:50, 14 January 2017 (UTC)TdanTce[reply]

It was vandalism, so i deleted second column.Montell 74 (talk) 11:10, 15 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Active leaders and collapsible cells

[edit]

Hey all! About ten years ago, I actually began to reformat and religiously update this page (and all of the other career stats leaders and playoff leaders pages) before "retiring" from it about five years ago, but I like to check in now and then to see what has changed. I also would like to get back into editing these again as I'm a big stats junkie. I like the progression charts and such, but I have a couple of suggestions. The section on this page about the "next 10" active players that are not on this list, I don't feel this section is necessary. It's not on any of the other stats lists and I just feel it's superfluous. Would anybody else object to deleting that section?

Also, I had received a suggestion many years ago when I would update these pages each night at the end of each game. Someone suggested that for those players that played on multiple teams throughout their career, that in the cell under "team(s) played for" section, we could create cells that would be collapsible. The default state would show the team(s) played for as hidden and just say something like "5 teams" or "3 teams" followed by their career totals, and then when you click "show" it lists the individual franchises they played for with a further breakdown of the totals per franchise. So for example, with guys like Kobe Bryant and Reggie Miller who only played for one team would just show "Los Angeles Lakers" and "Indiana Pacers" on that line with their career totals following. But for guys like Kareem, it would be a collapsible/expandable cell that could read as "2 teams" with his career totals, and then when you click "show" it expands to show the Milwaukee Bucks (followed by his totals with the Bucks) and the Los Angeles Lakers (followed by his totals with the Lakers). I think it would make the chart look less bulky as once you visit the page, all 50 players' career totals would be only one row thick, so the table would take up less room...then the reader could expand/collapse the players' "team(s) played for" cell to see a further breakdown of their stats if they so wish. Now, admittedly I'm not sure how that would affect the "sortability" of the table...in fact, as I continue to ponder this, it could very easily screw up the sortability of the table. But does anybody out there who has more of an advanced background in dealing with table formatting know the compatibility with collapsible/expandable cells and sorting?

Thanks all for keeping these pages neat, organized, and vandalism free. Can't wait for the new season to start! Coulraphobic123 (talk) 04:55, 12 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism

[edit]

Some idiot is putting stupid jokes in the list. LeBron passed Wilt tonight with 31,425. I don't know how to edit the table, but no use until either this fool gets bored and goes away, or somebody with higher powers puts a stop to it.Wood Monkey 06:17, 15 November 2018 (UTC)Wood Monkey 06:18, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

OK, someone restored the list, but now it should be updated. Points per game "average"

[edit]

Is it just me or is it redundant to have "average" in the column name? It's like adding "count" to the end of all the other stats columns. Just want to make sure I'm not missing something. —LOL T/C 00:47, 19 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Have only seemed to have changed the name column and the team column. Unnecessary vandalism.
