Place names
[edit]For locations with multi-lingual names, using the English name is appropriate. I understand people's positions on the English version of some place names, but nonetheless there are literally thousands of reliable sources that support the common use of the English name. I suggest that the common usage, consistent with the article names within Wikipedia, should be used within this article for the places of Montreal and Quebec. Isaac Lin (talk) 14:51, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
- The list passed through a featured content review with the accented place names, and most other MLB featured content relating to Montréal uses the accented spelling. It's not a matter of an "English name", just a matter of ignorance of diacritics, which is a big problem in MLB in peoples' names to begin with. I have made every effort to make sure that diacritics are properly applied, and this is one place where they are. KV5 (Talk • Phils) 14:56, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
- Common usage for a place is not restricted to MLB sources; all sources must be considered. It would seem inconsistent for the articles on Montreal and Quebec to use the English versions of their names, but not the text in links to them. Regardless of origins, the de facto reality is that the English names are well established in history. Isaac Lin (talk) 15:01, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not talking about MLB sources; I'm talking about MLB on Wikipedia in general. There seems to be an ignorance of spelling, and that's what I'm trying to avoid. Personally I think that the articles on Montreal and Quebec should be moved, and that the Expos should be merged, but neither of those has anything to do with this issue. The fact remains that both spellings are correct, and that is why we have redirects. KV5 (Talk • Phils) 15:19, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
- Since the scope of this matter is broader than just this article, I'm starting a thread on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Baseball. Isaac Lin (talk) 15:27, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

- When "Montreal" is used in English text, is it an English word or a French word? If it's a French word, then I'd agree with KV5 that it's misspelled without the accent. On the other hand, if it's an English word then there isn't an accent, since accents aren't used in English words. I think we all agree that "Rome" is an English word and not a misspelling of Roma, and similarly for other major cities such as "Munich" (München) and "Havana (La Habana)." If those are all considered to be English words, I think it's reasonable to regard "Montreal" as the English name of that city as well. BRMo (talk) 02:17, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
- If the majority of you accept that it's actually an English word rather than a corruption, I'll go along with it, though I disagree. — KV5 • Talk 11:48, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

- Place names keep or lose the accents based on if there is a common english version. Both Montreal and Quebec have long been determined on wikipedia to have common names with out accent, which is why the main articles on them lack the accent. And as you know from the hockey project I am a pro-diacritics editor...so if I accept it there must be something to it lol. -DJSasso (talk) 17:04, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
- Oh I totally didn't notice it had the accented names in this article. Yeah, it should be changed to unaccented, even though my preference would be to have the names with them. But I know better than to get into diacritic wars on wikipedia. You've seen how heated they get and how long they last. -DJSasso (talk) 17:09, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
- The most relevant Wikipedia guideline appears to be Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English)#Modified letters, which recommends that we "follow the general usage in English reliable sources." While this guidance allows for use of diacritics in some cases, I think it would be hard to argue that "general usage" supports diacritics in the cases being discussed here. BRMo (talk) 03:47, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
- Wikipedia's guidance on geographical items is directly relevant. Isaac Lin (talk) 03:55, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
Possible merge?
[edit]I created List of current Major League Baseball managers a few weeks ago with the intention of getting it up to FL status independent of this list. Now, I'm rethinking things. Perhaps, instead of adding prose to discuss tenures of managers, past managerial jobs, etc., at that list, it should be merged into this article, such that this article contains an examination of current and all-time managerial positions. That might make this list strong enough for Wikipedia:Today's featured list, no? – Muboshgu (talk) 17:54, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
- That was the original intent of this list, with the hatnote to the MLB managers template taking the place of a "list of current managers", per se. — KV5 • Talk • 23:32, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
- Any particular reason that was abandoned? I merged the two in a rough fashion at User:Muboshgu/List of MLB managers, just for the sake of consideration. We could find other improvements to make with them combined. Should I go ahead and do it? – Muboshgu (talk) 23:43, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
- Ah, I didn't realize that you meant list of current managers in table form. At the FLC for this list, I believe that was deemed unnecessary due to the template hatnote and unstable. That's just my vague recollection, though. The current managers were (originally) all present in the paragraphs on their teams, rendering a table superfluous. Difficult to maintain, though, and I lost the motivation to do so when my Wikipedia time became severely restricted over the past 18 months. — KV5 • Talk • 00:56, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, I did mean integrating the table into the article. I noticed that articles that make WP:TFL seem to have a decent amount of both text and table(s). I'll check the FLC, and perhaps monitor it myself. – Muboshgu (talk) 01:47, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
- Ah. In the FLC, a reviewer suggested adding the table, but you objected, and the reviewer was okay with your reasoning. – Muboshgu (talk) 01:49, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
- OK. Well, would you be open to something slightly different, perhaps separating current National and American League managers under their individual leagues? To me, the single table just looks big (guess I shouldn't talk after this though). — KV5 • Talk • 01:54, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
- You mean the NL manager paragraphs then an NL manager table, followed by the AL manager paragraphs and the AL manager table? That could work. My issue with it as it currently exists in my userspace isn't that its too big, but that going from all that prose to a big table has no flow. Maybe splitting it up by leagues will help. – Muboshgu (talk) 02:05, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
- Please check out what I did at my userspace, linked above. If there are no objections, I'll add the tables as they are next week. If there are objections, we can keep talking. – Muboshgu (talk) 19:24, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
- I like that flow a lot better. Go for it, just make sure to drop the hatnote from the current list when doing so. Cheers. — KV5 • Talk • 00:09, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

[edit]What on this page is outdated, exactly? I don't see any justification for that tag on this talk page. – Muboshgu (talk) 06:37, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
Win-Loss records
[edit]Is there any possibility of getting the win-loss record of the current coaches like the other sports current coaches pages(NFL NHL and NBA)? 72.15.25.104 (talk) 03:50, 24 December 2014 (UTC)
