World Soccer Player of The Year

The award mentioned above is missing in the awards.

It is with other players.

Add to that all the "man of the match" performances

If you want things added, please provide a reliable source (wikipedia is not itself a reliable source). Also please note that man of the match will not be added as it is not considered an honour. Qed237 (talk) 15:22, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
If those Wikipedia pages have reliable sources, than they are reliable sources. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.129.124.251 (talk) 13:46, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
What now?
  • All the major UEFA and LFP honours (Best Player, Best Forward, Team) are included and always have been. UEFA Ultimate Team and CL Squad are not notable; the first is simply a tally of players' appearances in the team of the year and the second is redundant to that edition.
  • Honours by single media outlets (newspapers, magazines, networks, agencies) are not included as explained here. World Soccer, Onze Mondial and L'Équipe may carry prestige, but we have to draw a line somewhere. Is it really notable that a five-time World Player of the Year was also the Best Latino in La Liga? You are of course free to join that discussion if you disagree.
  • ESM Team of the Year unfortunately can't be sourced. If you have reliable sources for the 2006–07, 2007–08, 2008–09 and 2009–10 seasons, it can be included.

So there are basically different standards for different players, e.g. C. Ronaldo, if that's on purpose, I would stop asking.

Cristiano Ronaldo has 5 hattricks in the CL now, by the way, so the record is shared now and that fact should be mentioned. Cheers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.94.42.98 (talk) 09:45, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

I believe that it is important to include the "Assists" statistic in his overall stats chart (other prolific players such as Francesco Totti have an additional column for "Assts"). With respecto to the information required, it is available at Messi's Spanish Wikipedia page, where the column "A" stands for "Assists" (https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lionel_Messi).

Please let me know what sort of information or doing on my part would be necessary to include this information.

Kind regards,

Gorecb137 (talk) 17:27, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

Not done There is a WP:CONSENSUS at Wikipedia:WikiProject Football that no assists should be added to stats tables, so there is not much you can do unless that consensus changes. Qed237 (talk) 22:33, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

"An Historic Table"

So I made an edit yesterday (I think) about an historic, which I changed to a historic. This edit was reverted though, and I was just wondering if anyone actually knows why it's an historic? I looked at a few different websites but for all of them I couldn't find anything to support an historical. In case anyone has the wrong impression I'm not annoyed with whoever reverted it I'm just really surprised that an historic is accepted and it's been on my mind since it was reverted. Deyaaanog (talk) 16:05, 26 May 2016 (UTC)

It feels like an affectation to me. Oxford Dictionaries says both forms are acceptable but "a" is more common, so let's go with that. Prayer for the wild at heart (talk) 16:24, 26 May 2016 (UTC)

Is Messi a devout Catholic?

In the Early Life section, Messi is written to be a devout Catholic. Devout Catholics do not get convicted or have children out of wedlock. This is unfair to devout Catholics and is more about idolizing Messi. [1] 73.90.209.126 (talk) 18:02, 10 July 2016 (UTC)

Who says devout Catholics don't get convicted? Of course they do! Being a devotee of a religion doesn't exclude you from those things... – PeeJay 19:43, 10 July 2016 (UTC)

Custodial sentence

Messi's recent criminal conviction for tax fraud, custodial sentence, and fine should be regarded as a more serious life event than "Messi holds the record for most assists made in La Liga", and so should be included in the lead.Dingowasher (talk) 07:00, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

Agreed. Added. Tiller54 (talk) 18:15, 9 July 2016 (UTC)
Not noteworthy enough for inclusion in the header, though. Messi will still be known as the superstar footballer and not the tax cheat, and this story will soon be forgotten unless he screws up again somewhere down the line. He's hardly the second coming of Donté Stallworth. sixtynine • speak up • 01:59, 10 July 2016 (UTC)
Agree with sixtynine that this is not necessarily lead material. However, if it is included, it should be done in a manner proportional to the rest of the lead and body. Anything more than a sentence is overkill. Cramming it in the opening paragraph borders on trolling. Prayer for the wild at heart (talk) 09:01, 15 July 2016 (UTC)

Is this bias?

Many in the sport DO rate Messi as the best ever. What bullshit is this? Fredgoos (talk) 11:12, 25 August 2016 (UTC)

A lot of sports people are called "the greatest ever". It's only bias if you oppose doing it for some and not others. Personally I think that for this encyclopedia one of the greatest is enough for anyone. And "what bullshit is this" is neither necessary nor civil. Britmax (talk) 15:03, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
It's pretty convenient that once Ronaldo's "rated by some in the sport" line was removed from his Wiki page, so was Messi's "rated by many in the sport." Fredgoos (talk) 23:12, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
There's a whole debate about who is better: Mess or Ronaldo. So, I believe someone removed that line because they didn't agree Messi should have that "rated by many in the sport" line, whilst Ronaldo is just stuck with "often considered the best player in the world." Fredgoos (talk) 23:15, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
Bias? It sure is. Fredgoos (talk) 23:16, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
I apologise for saying, "What bullshit is this?" Fredgoos (talk) 23:28, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
This matter concerns this article as well as Diego Maradona and Pele, since these are the three players who are verifiably considered by many to be the greatest footballer ever. Pinging @Irn:, who previously made an attempt at discussion at Talk:Diego Maradona. I don't particularly care what description we use for any player, as long as it doesn't (appear to) indicate a fringe view ("some say"). Both "one of the greatest" and "the greatest" can be reliably sourced as being widely held views. Prayer for the wild at heart (talk) 10:08, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
As an aside, I'm not sure this type of statement (e.g. "Lampard is widely regarded as Chelsea's greatest ever player") isn't a violation of WP:PEACOCK. I may start a RfC on this at a later date. Prayer for the wild at heart (talk) 10:10, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
And that's my point. Not whether anyone is greater but whether it is in the remit of a general encyclopedia to peacock anyone this far. Britmax (talk) 14:29, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
When it comes to peacockery, there is little difference between "one of the greatest" and "the greatest". Assigning any level of "greatness" to a person is potentially problematic. But that's another discussion. Prayer for the wild at heart (talk) 16:50, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for pinging me on this! There's a big difference between being considered "the greatest" and "one of the greatest", and I think that Wikipedia should reflect this. Hundreds of footballers are considered "one of the greatest" but only a handful are ever named "the greatest" and of those even fewer could be said to be considered the greatest by many. (I don't know football very well, but I think a good example of this would be Garrincha, widely considered one of the greatest, but consistently overshadowed by Pelé and, thus, rarely if ever considered "the greatest".) Wikipedia doesn't have to take sides and determine who is, in fact, "the greatest", but we can – and should – reflect what is found in reliable sources. If reliable sources say that Messi is considered by many to be the greatest, we should go with that; if they say that he is considered by many to be one of the greatest, we should go with that. In either case, this should be fleshed out with the relevant sources cited in the text of the article and only summarized in the lead. As the text stands right now, he's widely considered to be one of the greatest. -- Irn (talk) 15:20, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
Regarding your last point: Can't be arsed to check now, but the Reception section says something to the effect of how a majority of European experts now deem Messi the greatest ever*. I don't know how to expand on that without creating a WP:QUOTEFARM. (*Whether that is objectively true I don't know, but a respected newspaper makes that claim so that's sufficient for our purposes.) Prayer for the wild at heart (talk) 16:50, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
You're right. I had missed that. Cheers, -- Irn (talk) 17:44, 26 August 2016 (UTC)

Dear Editor!

According to this Wikipedia page, Lionel Messi holds the following records alone:

  • Only player to be top goalscorer in five UEFA Champions League seasons (2008–09 to 2011–12, 2014–15)
  • Only player to be top goalscorer in four consecutive UEFA Champions League seasons

However, Cristiano Ronaldo also has done both of these achievements, for more info please visit this page: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/List_of_European_Cup_and_UEFA_Champions_League_top_scorers#By_player

Therefore it is not true that Messi is the _only_ player. :)

Thank you in advance for your modification! :)

Shadon Shadon (talk) 16:11, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

Ronaldo haven't been top goalscorer in four CONSECUTIVE seasons. It means 4 in a row. Csknowitall (talk) 16:26, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

Actually, looking at that other article, Shadon is right: by being the top goal-scorer last year, Ronaldo got four in a row and his fifth overall, making Messi no longer the only one to have achieved that. -- Irn (talk) 17:52, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

Well, Csknowitall, I know what does CONSECUTIVE mean. And the page, I mentioned, contains the seasons in which CR7 won the top scorer's title: 2012–13, 2013–14, 2014–15, 2015–16. Any more questions...? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shadon (talkcontribs) 19:39, 7 January 2017 (UTC)
