Major Update to History
[edit]Hello, fellow editors! I've recently made updates to the Leisure Suit Larry series Wikipedia page, specifically in the sections detailing the games' development, cultural impact, and legacy. This expands on the previous history section with nearly a dozen additional citations plus new box art released to Creative Commons. Here’s a brief overview of the major updates:
- Original Series Background:
- Added details on the inception of the series with "Softporn Adventure" in 1981 by Chuck Benton, which set the groundwork for Leisure Suit Larry.
- Highlighted Al Lowe’s influence and his inspiration drawn from 1970s humor and culture, leading to the creation of the protagonist, Larry Laffer.
- Development and Narrative Changes:
- Emphasized Lowe's rewriting of "Softporn Adventure" into a comedic narrative for "Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards," retaining only one line from the original.
- Discussed the use of the Adventure Game Interpreter engine which supported the humor and interactive storytelling.
- Series Impact and Evolution:
- Detailed the balance between comedy and adult content, which distinguished the series from more explicit adult-themed games.
- Noted the rampant software piracy issues that plagued the series and how it inadvertently led to significant data losses due to computer viruses in corporate environments.
- Updated sales figures and market impact, including a peak with early sequels and a decline in the mid-90s.
- Corporate and Creative Changes:
- Described the shift in Sierra’s business strategy following its acquisition by CUC International and how it affected the series, including the halt in production of "Leisure Suit Larry 8: Lust in Space."
- Spin-offs and Sequels:
- Added information on "Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude" and "Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust," including development details and critical reception.
- Mentioned the revival of the series with newer titles like "Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Don't Dry" and its sequel.
- Remakes and Remasters:
- Updated the section on remakes, particularly the 1991 and 2013 versions of "Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards," highlighting technological advancements and reception.
- Voice Acting:
- Redarranged details elsewhere on the page to tell the story of voice acting in the series starting with "Leisure Suit Larry 6" in one section.

[edit]I thought Leisure Suit Larry 4 was never made, as Al Lowe said there won't be a fourth part - therefore the fifth had to been done after the third. --Abdull 16:11, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
- Yes... what is your point? :) Pictureuploader 17:18, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
I've seen LSL4 and played it. It featured graphics and text control engine similar to LSL3. The main theme was 'pleasure cruise' I guess not unlike LSL7 (though I haven't played it). The copy I had was missing some files. You could get on the cruise but shortly it would require a missing file. I suspect the LSL4 was not finished or some files/sources were indeed lost.
Separate articles
[edit]I suggest putting each game in to its own separate article which will allow to evolve them better (like adding more freely technical details and trivia). This occurs in other game series articles (Myst and King's Quest), while others follow this format here (Space Quest, Monkey Island). Waiting for suggestions. Pictureuploader 23:43, 22 August 2005 (UTC)
- Tagged for cleanup.. I guess my proposal should go on and put each game into its own article.. waiting for opinions.. if not, i am proceeding myself Pictureuploader 22:06, 29 September 2005 (UTC)
- Go ahead and split it. The first thing i thought when i read this article was that it's really lacking detail. If i can find the time, i will try and add some detail myself.
Inexplicably popular with women
[edit]- The series was inexplicably popular with women, perhaps because Larry is depicted as a complete loser and men in general are frequently the butt of jokes.
I am quite skeptical about its popularity among women... I removed it until a reference can be found. :-) Also, depicting Larry as a "complete loser" is POV. Well... he manages his way through afterall, doesn't he? :-) bogdan 00:35, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
- Larry throughout the games, dialogues etc etc seems like the victim. He is fooled easily, when he speaks to people they ingore him or tell him to buzz off and call him dork. This is expressesd even by narrator's messages through various puns and sarcastic comments about him. Pictureuploader 09:11, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
That was me. Its source was a reputed Finnish gaming magazine from that period, but from this standpoint I agree that it's not sufficient for inclusion. (Not that this is relevant anymore but..) --Kizor 19:50, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Longest running adult themed series ever?
[edit]Is it? At 19 years old (or 17 if you just count from first game to most recent) I think it just might be. Anyone think they can back it up?--SeizureDog 19:37, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
Inspiration for Liesure Suit Larry
[edit]According to this interview Al Lowe created Liesure Suit Larry as a remake/parody of a text based game called Soft Porn. I think the article should reference this in some way. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 152.30.221.68 (talk) 03:17, 1 March 2007 (UTC).
- Actually this refers to Larry 1. Check it out Pictureuploader 08:14, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
- There was also the character "Larry Dallas" on Three's Company, a popular American sitcom in the early 80s. The sitcom character Larry was a leisure suit wearing "ladies man" who bears a lot of physical resemblance and mannerisms to LSL the game character. Just throwin that in the mix... Plattforms?
[edit]Was Leisure Suit Larry available on other platforms than PC/DOS?--Hhielscher (talk) 22:32, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, of course (see SCI Games). --Vihljun (talk) 10:33, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
Voice Actor Credits
[edit]In Shape up or Slip Out!, Love For Sail!, Casino, and Magna Cum Laude, Larry is voiced by Jan Rabson. Larry Lovage, the protagonist of Magna Cum Laude, is voiced by Tim Dadabo.
I am confused. Is Larry Lovage, the protagonist of Magna Cum Laude, not the Larry Laffer who was apparently the protagonist of the other games mentioned; and both of them appear in Magna Cum Laude? Forgive me, I've never played any of these games, and I don't know anything about them. It's almost as if these two sentences were written by two different people with opposing viewpoints. 69.234.196.33 (talk) 20:25, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
- The statement is probably correct. The series changes the protagonist in Magna Cum Laude, but AFAIK there is a cameo/introduction with the "original" Larry, who ist the uncle of the "new" Larry. So the statement about the voice actors makes sense. However, since I have never played Magna Cum Laude, I cannot confirm this for sure. --91.7.82.113 (talk) 09:45, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Inaccuracy from Replay Games regarding LSL?
[edit]"On June 21, 2011 Replay Games announced on their blog that the rights to the Leisure Suit Larry series have been acquired." "Licensed" is a more accurate word; CodeMasters still own the IP. Sslaxx (talk) 14:43, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Clarify description in lede?
[edit]The lede describes it as "an adult-themed video game series", but it is not clear what "adult-themed" means: is it a comedy with sex jokes? A non-explicit dating sim? A pornographic game? A parody of dating/sex games? Some combination of the above? Does it differ between installments? This is really ambiguous.... —{{u|Goldenshimmer}}|✝️|ze/zer|😹|T/C|☮️|John15:12|🍂 09:33, 7 May 2017 (UTC)
