Area
[edit]The kilometer to mile conversion appears to be incorrect in the statement, "about 60 km (35 miles) long and nearly 40 km (more than 10 miles) wide." Using Google Maps, it looks like the island is nearly 40 km wide at the widest point, and more than 10 miles wide at the narrowest, but why would there be a different measuring standard for different units? - From the revision history, it appears that the estimates in km (also the one regarding the distance from the other islands) are estimates that were made by a Wikipedian on the basis of Google Maps, and added to the figures in miles without care as to whether the newly inserted figures even fit together with the ones already present in the article. Using the distance tool, I arrive at figures that are well compatible with the area estimate of 3300 km² but incompatible with all the other figures, including yours: the island appears to be about 110 km long but about 30 km wide on average. Unless Google Maps is completely misleading or incorrect, the alternative figure of 700 km² given on List of Antarctic and subantarctic islands is quite off. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 16:31, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
- The dimension of 35 by 10 miles are sourced to the Geographic Names Information System,[1] although it is unclear whether these are nautical miles or land miles. The area of 3300 km² (1274 mi², 962 nmi²) is inconsistent with these dimensions, the island is roughly rectangular so its area would be about 35 x 10 = 350 square miles. I will delete the area from the infobox. Verbcatcher (talk) 17:08, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
