Is Tornado an it or a she?

[edit]

Both are used in the article. I don't know which is WP standard, but it looks untidy to mix and match. 81.158.1.233 (talk) 00:27, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can't see where 'it' is used at all. Currently in the article, the locomotive is either referred to as Tornado or she, but as far as I can tell, never 'it'. MickMacNee (talk) 17:37, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
How about "Once on the main line, Tornado is not expected to leave it again until its ten-year fire-tube boiler re-certification in late 2018." It's also troubling that sometimes the name Tornado is not italicised, though mostly it is. 83.104.249.240 (talk) 20:48, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Notes and references

[edit]

Something seems to be currently wrong with the notes and references section LNER_Peppercorn_Class_A1_60163_Tornado#References - the floating numbers at the top.

Also the diagram (above the references)- is not - it's a picture. I'd suggest to get rid of it. A technical drawing would be a good idea though. — Preceding unsigned comment added by FengRail (talkcontribs) 20:19, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tornado vs Jaguar

[edit]

Hot off the press. Tornado has been hired by the BBC for one of Top Gear's famous races which is being staged tomorrow (25 April). Jeremy Clarkson in a Jaguar will race the train from London to Edinburgh. McWomble (talk) 13:28, 24 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Subject heading "Draughting"

[edit]

I was momentarily misled by this heading, which I took to be about (possible improvements from the original design in) the arrangements for drawing air through the grate and the tubes. The section is actually about the drawings. I suggest changing to "Drawings". (But this is my first ever contribution, so I'm not venturing into editing the page directly.) —Preceding unsigned comment added by RichardGMellish (talkcontribs) 11:40, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Diagram

[edit]

Is the 'diagram' of Tornado really necessary? There are already enough images of the engine, and this one is not particularly high quality (it looks like it was made in MS Paint in my opinion). TurboJUK (talk) 11:06, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm removing it, there were already comments in the archive about it, it seems the consensus is, it isn't needed. MickMacNee (talk) 15:59, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

tractive effort

[edit]

you have given horspower, tractive effort is a force not a power, and is such a unit measured in lbf or newtons. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.92.32.38 (talk) 01:20, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tornado works when electrics don't

[edit]

I have been sent the following news item: http://www.kentonline.co.uk/kentonline/news/2009/december/21/steam_wins_the_day.aspx - what can we get from that? --Redrose64 (talk) 22:15, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fastest operational steam locomotive in Britain

[edit]

In this section it states that the trust was persuing perrmission to run Tornado a t a speed of 90mph. I would just like to point out that the A1 trust has recived aproval to run Tornado at 90mph. So if anone would care to update that section I would appreciate it as i am new. Bmccoy78 (talk) 23:20, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It sounds interesting; but unless a WP:RELIABLE source can be found, such facts cannot be added. Is this something you found in a book, a magazine or website? If you add the details below here, we can look into it further. If it turns out to be WP:VERIFIABLE, it can go into the article. --Redrose64 (talk) 23:34, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
"Fastest operational steam locomotive in Britain" This really is Weasel words a less atention grabbin subheading should be used here 88.109.2.86 (talk) 13:43, 12 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Engineering Heritage Award

[edit]

I've added the 2009 Engineering Heritage Award in the list of key dates. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pallata (talkcontribs) 13:09, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Project Milestones?

[edit]

The first half of this list do look like project milestones, however the latter entries look less and less notable - was it really a project milestone to visit Paddington station? Suggest editing some of the less notable ones out.

Project milestone from wikipedia page: "Within the framework of project management, a milestone is the end of a stage that marks the completion of a work package or phase, typically marked by a high level event such as completion, endorsement or signing of a deliverable, document or a high level review meeting." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2ghoti (talkcontribs) 17:46, 12 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I came here to make that same point myself. The list is much too long, and has too much minutiae for a general-audience encyclopedia. ("First synchronous smooth wheel motion" is a good example; that's the sort of thing that goes on a dedicated Tornado/new-build site, not on Wikipedia.) It gets worse after mid-2009, when despite dozens of entries there are hardly any references. And it gets worse still lower down: we do not need every first appearance at such-and-such a line/station/gala to be mentioned.
The Top Gear race is notable, as it received wide media coverage. The repaint is probably also notable. Reaching 10,000 miles on the Torbay Express? Not a chance. I don't have enough time right now to have a go at fixing the list, but if someone else wants to do so that would be great. For the moment I've simply deleted the line about visiting Norwich station. This seems entirely non-notable, and to compound matters was accompanied by the name of the promoting company. It read like an advert, so it's gone. Loganberry (Talk) 15:22, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Removed some of the more obvious claimed 'milestones' which are more suitable for a specific Tornado site or 'fan' page. Will look at list for others that may not belong here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2ghoti (talkcontribs) 14:03, 8 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Detailed service history

[edit]

Might I suggest that the detailed history of Tornado in service be split off to a separate page? It's already long, and will get much longer over its life, and it detracts from having a crisp, pointed article. Noel (talk) 00:17, 5 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think that this should be done. Indeed, I think that what we already have is more than enough; we are not here to chronicle its day-to-day use, nor the maintenance schedule. We should be sticking to the primary events. --Redrose64 (talk) 09:56, 5 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm OK with that (it likewise achieves my basic aim, to make the article crisp) - but then someone should remove some of the extraneous fluff ("day-to-day use ... the maintenance schedule") that's already there. Noel (talk) 15:20, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

100 mph!

[edit]

Tornado has reached a speed of over 100 mph on the mainline as part of certification tests to allow her to run at 90 mph. Obviously that source is inadmissible here, but it's sure to be picked up by sources that we can use. Word is that BBC Radio 4 covered the story. Mjroots (talk) 08:39, 12 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It has attracted a lot of media attention. Heritage Railway magazine cover the story here on their website (which I guess is more official than their facebook page). Also covered by the Telegraph here, and the BBC here.
But I'm guessing it would be wrong for the article to say that it was achieved "in passenger service" as it was a test run (without passengers) to support 90 mph operating (and has to achieve 10% over proposed maximum speed to give a safety margin). What kind of fuel does the Tornado use?

[edit]

Is it coal? Oil fired? Unicorn magic dust? Nuclear power? The article doesn't say and it need to make clear what the fuel is for dumb people like me! 73.181.225.112 (talk) 20:27, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Before asking such a question it would have been wise for you to have read the article. The infobox has a field "Fuel type" which says "Coal". If you search elsewhere in the article for the word "coal" you will find numerous instances. --David Biddulph (talk) 20:52, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Like I said, I'm dumb! How would I search for "coal" if I don't know what fuel it use? The steam locomotives I'm familiar with in my area are mostly oil fired. It should be plainly obvious. I edited the opening paragraph to show what fuel it use. One should not have to search the entire article to find this out.73.181.225.112 (talk) 00:04, 14 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
A certain amount of searching is unavoidable, because we can't put every fact into the opening sentence. You could have searched for "fuel", that occurs four times, two of which would have provided you with "Fuel type Coal" in the infobox, and "in favour of the original design of coal firing, due to the large increase in global fuel prices" in the text. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 14:26, 14 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Paddington 2

[edit]

Should we mention about Tornado's appearance in Paddington 2? It appeared in the chase scene in the climax. Visokor (talk) 06:52, 7 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Was it significant to the plot? That is, if a different locomotive had been used, would the outcome have been different? If the choice of locomotive was irrelevant, mentioning the film appearance is nothing more than trainspotting. But if it was important that this loco was used, we need a third-party reliable source explicitly saying that. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 00:32, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Operational top speed

[edit]

I’ve tweaked the 'Operational top speed' section; the sources for some of the claims there pre-date the claims themselves. I’ve also tweaked the reference to DR.18.201 and it being the fastest operational steam locomotive in the world; it stopped being that when it became non-operational. I trust everyone is OK with that. Moonraker12 (talk) 11:52, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

There are some of them in here. Anamyd (talk) 23:31, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Trainz 3

[edit]

Can we talk about Tornados appearance in Trainz 3? It’s a purchasable engine in the app. 2603:7000:6E3B:9266:D11A:1BD0:F01C:AB38 (talk) 10:44, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No, per WP:NOTFORUM. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 17:56, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Err…Redrose64, she DOES appear as a playable engine. 2603:7000:6E3B:9266:24F4:67F0:53EA:B6A6 (talk) 23:09, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Pronoun

[edit]

I see this was raised back in 2009. Why is the locomotive, a machine, referred to as "she"? It isn't a ship. John (talk) 22:59, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@John: Yes, I think that I caught them all. --Redrose64 🦌 (talk) 00:22, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nice work. Thanks. John (talk) 01:03, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
