This railway line was the dream project of the Travancore Royal family and other upper classes of the kingdom. It literally gave them a safe passage to Madras and to the rest of British-India. Going by other routes was full of dangers.

See this QUOTE from TRAVANCORE STATE MANUAL: In the same year 1066 M.E, the negotiations for financing the construction of the Railway from Tinnevelly to Quilon were concluded, the Travancore Government guaranteeing interest at four per cent on the capital required to construct the line within the Travancore limits for a period of fifteen years.
