District renamed from 'Karimganj' to 'Sribhumi'
[edit]Well, while the district renaming has been announced through various news channel, social media, and official X handle of CMO, there is no confirmation that, the district rename has been passed officially. I request editor's to wait. (edit) Jor langneh (Talk) 17:32, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Jor.langneh: Hi, have a look at this article. Thanks. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 17:44, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi. Unfortunately I couldn't read the link as it is behind a pay wall
requires a subscription. I checked other news, i could only find "..Cabinet has fulfilled.." as the only worthy for confirmation, but not sure what it really mean. I suggest we wait for another 24 hours, for more clarification from official channel (edit). Jor langneh (Talk) 17:54, 19 November 2024 (UTC)

- Hi @Fylindfotberserk. Rename has been officially done. Alongwith the headquarter of the same district. - @Jor.langneh: Do a proper move request as guided in WP:RM here. Do not do unilateral or cut-paste moves like you did at the district article. It is disruptive and blockable. Cut-paste moves remove the history of the article. You are an experienced user, you should know that. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 09:15, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Fylindfotberserk: Thanks for the direction. TBH I wasn't aware of the page request feature. Jor langneh (Talk) 11:19, 23 November 2024 (UTC)

Requested move 23 November 2024
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: not moved. Consensus seems to be to not move, with arguments of Common Name. (non-admin closure) ~/Bunnypranav:<ping> 08:22, 14 December 2024 (UTC)
Karimganj district → Sribhumi district – The district has been renamed, and notified to public through Official X channel. (News1) Jor langneh (Talk) 11:27, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose - Too soon as of now. Karimganj/Karimganj district is still the WP:COMMONNAME. Also see WP:OFFICIAL. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 11:55, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose: "Karimganj" remains the WP:COMMONNAME as it is widely used in official, historical, and geographical contexts. While "Sribhumi" reflects the recent renaming. Wikipedia prioritizes the most recognizable name for articles to ensure clarity and accessibility. Aryan{Talk} 17:29, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Support - The actual name of the article should be Sribhumi district. I am a resident of the town since 2000, Sribhumi is actually the WP:COMMONNAME. Not only the town but also most of the people in the district used to refer 'Sribhumi' instead of 'Karimganj'. Earlier, before the renaming, Sribhumi was the WP:COMMONNAME and 'Karimganj' was the WP:OFFICIAL. Now, both the WP:COMMONNAME and the WP:OFFICIAL name is 'Sribhumi'. - User:Goswami21 (talk) 20:40, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- You are confusing district name with town name. *Wikipedia doesn't accept first source (here which is you). They have to be confirmed through news article. *All in good time. Jor langneh (Talk) 22:45, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- The claim that "Sribhumi" is the WP:COMMONNAME lacks evidence and relies on anecdotal references. Being a local resident does not validate the claim, as WP:COMMONNAME requires widespread usage in reliable sources like government records and media. Without proof that "Sribhumi" is more widely used than "Karimganj" beyond local contexts, the argument does not meet Wikipedia's naming criteria. Aryan{Talk} 02:19, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose - Renaming the article to the official name at this point is premature. "Karimganj"/"Karimganj district" is the WP:COMMONNAME and is widely recognized (officially recognized since 1878).[1] While the official name is already mentioned in the article, forcing this change seems politically motivated. Given the religious sensitivity of the region, especially with Muslims forming the majority who oppose this change, the current title is more appropriate.

- Note that Wikipedia naming conventions do not cater to 'political sensitivities' or 'feelings' of particular demographics. They are solely driven by policies and guidelines. Since the name of the district has been officially changed, it will surely reflect here in the future when the new name becomes the WP:COMMONNAME. As of now, it is simply too soon for such a change. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 17:40, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Fylindfotberserk
- yeah, I know that
- I have just explained the matter. - Cerium4B • Talk? • 17:56, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Cerium4BAn elected government of Assam officially made this change, which reflects the democratic process and should be acknowledged as factual. Including the official name in the first paragraph and infobox is not politically motivated but aligns with Wikipedia's guidelines for neutrality and accuracy. Retaining the current article name ensures stability, but ignoring the official name undermines objectivity. How do you justify prioritizing sensitivities over factual representation under Wikipedia’s neutrality policy? Aryan{Talk} 10:17, 26 November 2024 (UTC)

- I see a lot of assertions about COMMONNAME and little evidence. Would editors like to provide sources, preferably sources written after the name change (WP:NAMECHANGES) and preferably not just sources writing about the name change itself? I have little familiarity with the subject, but I tentatively support, seeing some sources using Sribhumi district: [1], [2]. Adumbrativus (talk) 01:33, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
