कमला vs कमल
[edit]It must me noted that
- कमल (Spelled in English as Kamal or Kamala) is masculine. It does mean the lotus (flower).
- कमला (Spelled Kamala, Kamla or Kamalaa) is feminine. Literally it means "of/associatd with the lotus. It implies a goddess sitting/standing on the lotus, in Hinduism, Buddhism or Jainism. See for example, examples from Sanchi

Kamala Harris' full name is Kamala Devi Harris, "Kamala Devi" means the goddess of the lotus, "Devi" makes it explicit.
कमला has been a very popular female name. कमल has been a popular male name in India.
Also note that
- Kamla Persad-Bissessar Here "Kamla Persad" implies gift of goddess Kamala (presumably Lakshmi).

- Agreed. Is it quite common that names ending "-a" are feminine in Sanskrit? I recall similar semantics in Latin. Avindratalk 21:46, 21 April 2021 (UTC)

Kamala → Kamala (disambiguation) – Kamala Harris is the primary topic at this point pbp 23:17, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- I don't doubt that this is true in the US, but remember that WP:PRIMARYTOPIC applies globally. Do you believe that Kamala Harris is the primary topic for the English-speaking world as a whole? - ZLEA T\C 00:19, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose More readers click on Kamala (wrestler) from the disambiguation page.[1] Perhaps this changes if she becomes president.—Bagumba (talk) 01:52, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
- Leaning oppose per Bagumba. I note by comparison that Trump still points to a disambiguation page, and Barack only points to Obama because Barack (disambiguation) has barely anything else on it (and even that is a close call). BD2412 T 01:32, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose - Per my statement above. While many Americans (which I am) might consider Kamala Harris to be the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, this is almost certainly not the case for the rest of the English-speaking world. - ZLEA T\C 03:22, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose The main competition is not the wrestler, who is known only in a niche group of American pro-wrestling fans, but the goddess Lakshmi, for whom Kamala is another name. Most likely, the vice president was named after said goddess, and she has heavy historical and long-term significance. The lack of primary topic between the vice president and the goddess leads me to believe this disambiguation should remain where it is. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 07:41, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose Harris gets a lot of media buzz right now because she's a presidential candidate, but that only applies to current events in the United States. Treating her as the primary topic over both the wrestler and the Hindu goddess (the latter of whom she is named after) would be a combination of recentism and US-centrism, two things which we work hard to avoid. Glades12 (talk) 14:22, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose. WP:RECENTISM for now, and the wrestler is still popular. Steel1943 (talk) 22:22, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose per Glades12 and Steel1943. The Hindu goddesss likely has the greatest long-term significance and the wrestler was quite popular in his day (being a featured performer in 1980's WWF is much more than "niche" notability) and as previously demonstrated, still elicits more clicks on this DAB than the Vice President. ― "Ghost of Dan Gurney" (talk) 22:11, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
I noticed Kamala Harris is linked from the general Harris page, even though there is also a specific Harris (surname) page that links to her as well. Does it make sense to do something similar for this page, given how notable she is as the VP and the 2024 Democratic nominee? GlobeGores (talk page | user page) 10:34, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
- Harris (surname) is an article about the surname itself, but it does link to List of people with surname Harris, where she is listed. - ZLEA T\C 18:21, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
- Somebody had removed her from here, then someone else has since added her back. FWIW, there was 3,414 clicks from Kamala to Kamala Harris in July.[2] —Bagumba (talk) 05:13, 12 September 2024 (UTC)
