[edit]Where's the stress in Maori? First diphthong is more than 4 moras from the end, but 4th mora from the end is the second half of a diphthong. In such a situation, does stress fall on the 3rd mora? — kwami (talk) 23:56, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
- The "o" is long (kaikōura), so 4th mora from the end is not the second half of a diphthong. Nurg (talk) 23:12, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks. Fixed. — kwami (talk) 23:49, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
Analog TV
[edit]I believe analog TV service was progressively switched off and became digital, and the process was completed in December 2013. Akld guy (talk) 07:32, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
Macron
[edit]As the official spelling of Kaikōura has the macron, I propose the title of the article reflect this. Please comment below if you disagree with me. Kind regards, Socrates420 (talk) 02:45, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
- See Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (New Zealand)#RfC: Proposal to add macrons to New Zealand naming conventions. If this proposal is accepted, then this article is likely to be renamed. If the proposal fails, then you can propose the renaming of this article as an exception, but you will need to make a good case. Until the proposal is closed, there's not much point in debating macron usage in individual articles.-gadfium 03:26, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

Further development of this article
[edit]I am keen to further develop this article, but want to share my current thoughts before proceeding, to allow for feedback.
- Wildlife and conservation: I propose to add a new section that would tentatively be "Wildlife and conservation". I would use this section for notable wildlife and conservation topics in the Kaikōura region. I plan to follow WP:SUMMARY, and add sub-headings that include the "main" template links to the existing articles about Hutton's shearwater, New Zealand fur seal, Whale watching in New Zealand, etc. This section would also include content on notable species in Kaikōura such as Banded dotterel
- Infrastructure: I propose a new section on infrastructure. Some existing content about buildings and other infrastructure that is currently in the History section would be relocated to this new section. I also propose to expand coverage about the large scale of investment in the recovery from the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake, particularly the restoration of State Highway 1 and the South Island main trunk railway in the Kaikōura district. I anticipate a sub-heading specifically about the impact of the earthquake, and the recovery.
- Geography: I propose another sub-heading and "main" template for Kaikōura Peninsula, to give more prominence to the useful article that already exists.
I am keen for feedback, and will wait a week or so before making the proposed changes to this article. However, I intend to begin now on collecting content for the proposed "Wildlife and conservation" topic. Keen for feedback Marshelec (talk) 05:25, 13 September 2021 (UTC)
- I support your proposals. The History section seems to have grown like topsy and there is much in there which could moved to Economy and Tourism. Gertrude206 (talk) 23:56, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
- Kaikōura District should be split off. Schwede66 16:16, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
- New separate article Kaikōura District has now been created. Still more work to do though. Marshelec (talk) 07:21, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
- Kaikōura District should be split off. Schwede66 16:16, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
Biodiversity section - split off ?
[edit]@Giantflightlessbirds,@Schwede66, @Alexeyevitch The Kaikōura region has been described as a biodiversity hotspot. This article about the town currently includes content about biodiversity that applies to a region much larger than the town itself. I am considering whether or not to split off detailed content into a new article (possibly titled Biodiversity of the Kaikōura region). The biodiversity of the region is clearly important to the town, and requires some coverage in this article because of multiple factors including tourism and economic benefits. However, the detail here covers topics far beyond the town, and seems too much for an article that should (probably) focus on the town.
Splitting off the biodiversity content is not entirely straightforward, because of topics such as the NZ fur seals around the Kaikōura Peninsula, the breeding colony of red-billed gulls that is located on the Kaikōura Peninsula (within walking distance of the residential areas), the Hutton's shearwaters that crash-land in the town, the little penguins that have been observed near the town, the banded dotterels that breed on the stony beaches immediately adjacent to the residential areas, and the local conservation efforts associated with these species.
I briefly considered expanding the Kaikōura District article to include biodiversity, but articles about Districts are usually more focussed on territorial administration, and so I am not sure that it is appropriate to include biodiversity of marine areas in an article about a District.
Other articles titled "Biodiversity of ..." are typically at the country level, so I am unsure about the merits of an article just about biodiversity in the Kaikōura region. Would it be best to split off the biodiversity section into a new article, or should we just leave things as they are at present ?_Marshelec (talk) 20:12, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
- I suggest that "Biodiversity of the Kaikōura region" makes most sense. Schwede66 20:15, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
- "Biodiversity of the Kaikōura region" could definitely have an article of its own, considering how significant Kaikōura is in its whales, penguins etc. and there is an abundance of sources relating to it. Coincidentally, I was reading a journal related to the blue penguins of Kaikōura before I got your message. Cheers, Alexeyevitch(talk) 02:50, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
