Juan Soto (baseball)Juan Soto – Similar WP:PRIMARY issue as discussed at Talk:Víctor Robles#Requested move 24 July 2017 for another young baseball star. As in that case, the subject of this article is considerably more notable (and the article itself is significantly more robust) than the subject of the existing Juan Soto article, which is a stub without references and could either be deleted or disambiguated as Juan Soto (referee). Odd play -- fly ball deflected

[edit]
(I have renamed this thread for clarity. Softlavender (talk) 01:26, 17 September 2018 (UTC))[reply]

− Soto was involved in an odd play on August 7, when he hit a fly ball to center field, where it deflected off the glove of Atlanta Braves center fielder Ender Inciarte, hit the outfield wall, and went into the glove of Adam Duvall. Thinking the ball had fallen right into Duvall's glove, Nationals baserunner Trea Turner ran back to first while Soto kept running to second, resulting in Soto being called out when they passed one another.

  • This text above seems to be a matter of some edit warring on this article with multiple reverts going on but no one actually discusses the changes. Can we please stop the reverting and come to some sort of agreement? Looking at the edit summaries I am seeing the arguments for deletion being "This is a trivial anecdote, no enclylopedic value" while reverts have no actual explanation for Why it should be included in the article on Juan Soto as far as I Can see. I would like to invite all editors to chinme in, especially Sakaimover, it would be great if you Can explain WHY you want to keep that text in the article. I cannot ping the IPs but i Will notify Them. MPJ-DK (talk) 21:56, 15 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • UpdatedAutopsyReport seems to be involved too. MPJ-DK (talk) 21:59, 15 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • It's not even edit warring. I flagged it as what I now know is WP:TRIVIA and the other guy thought that "removal of sourced content" which made it valid. I don't think that guy cared about the content of the paragraph, just the fact it was removed. Not sure if the guy even knows who Juan Soto is. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.173.218.150 (talk) 00:10, 16 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • But enough to raise it at the notice board. Based on feedback from both sides this horse is not being lead to the water, so I guess that's all we needed. Lights out, carry on. MPJ-DK (talk) 00:15, 16 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don’t care one way or the other. Sakaimover (talk) 01:33, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm with Sakaimover. I don't really care, I just thought it was a rather interesting tidbit. UpdatedAutopsyReport (talk) 02:20, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Removing it then. --Tarage (talk) 19:46, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Juan Soto officially traded to the New York Yankees

[edit]

Joel Sherman has officially reported that he has been traded. Its official. Please change the team from Padres to Yankees and confirm that the trade has been done. https://www.mlb.com/news/juan-soto-yankees-trade

Read the source, last sentence of the first paragraph: The clubs have not confirmed the deal. – Muboshgu (talk) 04:12, 7 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The Yankees official Twitter has confirmed that the trade has gone through. Soto is now a Yankee. https://x.com/Yankees/status/1732616100045623370?s=20 Red Card For You (talk) 04:28, 7 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

resumption of suspended game

[edit]

According to scoring rules, the resumption of a suspended game is considered to have occurred on the date the game was suspended. Thus, Soto's home run on June 18 officially happened on May 15...5 days before his debut. This is indeed an oddity, but yes, he did appear in a game before his debut. Sounds crazy but that's how it works.

Suppose the May 15th game was the next game after a 29-game hitting streak, and the player in question had not yet had a hit when the suspension occurred. He then goes on to hit in 30 more straight games. Until the suspended game is completed, his streak is in limbo: 29 + 1 + 30. If he hits in the completion of the suspended game, the streak is 60 games...if not, 29 games. For better or for worse, that's how they do it, it's in the rules. 96.237.184.133 (talk) 15:33, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Signing with the Mets

I understand this, but the trading-card company Topps just publicized a card with Soto pictured as a Met, with an autograph from Soto where he writes "my first Mets auto" under his name. Given that, it seems odd to not mention the signing (even if only as rumored) in the article. 100.10.36.205 (talk) 21:57, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
They don't hold themselves to the same standards we do. Topps is a for-profit company, Wikimedia Foundation is a non-profit. I wonder if they made any Topps Now cards when Carlos Correa was signing with the SF Giants a few years ago. – Muboshgu (talk) 21:59, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Edit Request: To Add the Obviously Permissible Reference to Fact that it’s been Now Ubiquitously Reported Fact that Virtually Every Major News Source Has Reported the Soto-Mets Agreement — Which Has Now Been Confirmed by the Mets Owner Himself

[edit]

The requested edit is one that would appear as a new second-to-last — and then a last — sentence of the article's opening paragraph, and read as follows:

'1. FIRST Added Sentence (with Sources):'

"On December 8, 2024, it was widely reported by several major news outlets that Soto and the New York Mets had reached an agreement whereby Soto would join the Mets in exchange for the largest compensation package in MLB history — $765 million, to be paid by the Mets to Soto over a period of 15 years (with the potential to increase above $800 million), including a $75 million signing bonus.”

The principal source for the foregoing revision would be this — https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna183526 — with additional support coming from (to list only a few among the gazillion other sources) the following: https://www.mlb.com/news/juan-soto-agrees-to-contract-with-mets-sources; https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/42774498/mlb-free-agency-2024-2025-juan-soto-signs-record-contract-new-york-mets-passan; https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/42864917/sources-mets-land-juan-soto-15-year-765m-deal; https://apnews.com/article/soto-mets-record-contract-3b2514520a93781d2a19199c6f92f0c1

'2. SECOND Added Sentence (with Sources):'

The second-added sentence would read as follows — “On December 9, 2024, the deal was confirmed — exclusively to John Heyman of the New York Post — by Mets owner Steve Cohen himself.” — and would be supported by the following reference: https://nypost.com/2024/12/09/sports/steve-cohen-wasnt-sure-mets-won-juan-soto-sweepstakes-until-he-heard-yes/.

Regarding the opt-out

[edit]

The 2029 option is a player opt-out with an escalator clause. My understanding is that the Mets can void his opt-out if he decides to exercise it by raising his salary, not that the Mets have to decide whether or not to commit an extra $4 million per year before Soto makes his decision. Spark2212 (talk) 04:08, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The cited source says: If Soto does want to reenter free agency as a 31-year-old, the Mets have the opportunity to override his opt out by adding an addition $4 million per season to the final 10 years of his contract.[1]Bagumba (talk) 04:38, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
