JU Rastrick - Letter from JUR to Mr Railston, of Morpeth, held in the Northumberland Record Office
[edit]JUR was asked by Mr Railston of Morpeth for details of his father's birth and his letter of response is found in the Northumberland CC archive, ref. ZAN M16/B2 4A14.
The letter is dated 31st August 1831 and includes "I am very imperfectly acquainted with his history or inventions was at an early age, I was sent to school in Yorkshire and home very little in Morpeth or in his own employment."
I have not amended the entry re schooling directly because although I have been researching JUR for an anniversary project (next year is the 160th anniversary of his death in 1856), I have not sought the permission of the Northumberland Record Office to use any of its documents. His father, John Rastrick, was primarily an agricultural engineer. His grandfather William Rastrick was a millwright, so engineering ran in the family. I have not been able to find out which school he attended in Yorkshire. He deposited his original engineering plans for the Sussex railways in the local record offices before he died. His tomb is a splendid pink granite wheel in the "Rastrick" area of the Extra Mural Cemetery. JUR's obituary refers to him being articled to his father at 15 and then at the age of 21 travelling to the west midlands. I assume you have used that:
"At the age of fifteen, young Rastrick was articled to his Father. At this period he was remarked among his associates, for the possession of particular energy of purpose, untiring perseverance, clearness of intellect, and sound mechanical and mathematical knowledge. At about the age of twenty-one he went southward, to gain experience as a machinist and millwright, particularly in the introduction of cast iron for machinery then almost in its infancy. He remained for some time at the Getley Iron Works, in Shropshire, and soon after entered into partnership with Mr. Hazeldine, of Bridgnorth, as a mechanical engineer, taking special charge of the iron foundry." 31.54.4.102 (talk) 10:37, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
