Stub?
[edit]Why is this article considered a stub? It seems quite complete to me - it contains all the important information about the OVA series as well as a perfectly sufficient overview of every episode. While I agree that this could be merged with some other JJBA article (don't know which one, though), I think that the stub ranking is unadequate. Pardon my accountlessness. 78.24.11.1 (talk) 00:02, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
- Upgraded to start: I did not see the part at the bottom:) The lead (and list format) can be expanded to include a bit more information, refer to some of the other Featured lists in this regard. I have removed the merge recommendation; the article should just be renamed to List of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OVA episodes (I was under the impression there was a seperate List of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure episodes article, in which case it should have been the target. It is quite unusual to have an OVA without a regular anime series.) G.A.Stalk 04:44, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
Move discussion in progress
[edit]There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (TV series) which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 04:47, 17 November 2018 (UTC)
Requested move 30 August 2020
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: Moved to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (OVA). (serial) OVAs are an edge case of WP:NCTV, as, by their design, they are limited in their length to what could fit on one item of physical media (typically with a run length of a maximum of two hours) as opposed to the general 13/26/52 order (one can compare this to how the line between miniseries and full series in the US is about six or seven episodes). This brings us into the miniseries special case, and based on the discussion below, how these series are typically referred to in reliable sources, and Wikipedia (uncodified convention), the disambiguator "OVA" (as opposed to the proposal of "1993 OVA series", though I can see the argument for "1993 OVA"). For what it's worth, from my own cursory view, the disambiguator "anime" seems to be only used once on Wikipedia – for Pokémon, which is a special case – and WP:MOSANIME conforms with WP:NCTV, so there is no need to "slap down" WP:ANIME at all. I would also suggest, going forward, that editors at WP:ANIME discuss with those at WP:NCTV to formulate a guideline for serial OVAs for the future, though I suspect such a consensus would, for the same reasons here, just see "OVA" as similar to how "serial" is used for British miniseries. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (1993 anime series) → JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (1993 TV series) – I'm renaming JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (1993 anime series) to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (1993 TV series) as per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (television)#Series television articles. - Oppose, for the reasons stated in the last move discussion. This is not a TV series – it is a direct-to-video original video animation series. No reliable source (and nobody in general) would ever refer to this as a TV series, which is different from examples like Ozark (TV series), which are commonly referred to as web television series. In this case, I support the status quo (which is not perfect), in absence of a broader discussion on the most suitable disambiguation for OVA's. — Goszei (talk) 00:23, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
- Comment: That's why I suggested to name it as JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (1993 OVA series) since it never aired on TV. SpectresWrath (talk) 03:37, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
- Since only "insiders" know what the heck an "OVA" is, better alternatives would be JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (1993 film series) (technically correct) or even JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (1993 direct to video series) (or would it be JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (1993 direct-to-video series)?...). But "TV series" is close enough in this case that it works. --IJBall (contribs • talk) 15:51, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
- Support, if for no other reason to slap down WP:ANIME's continued ignoring of naming conventions (specifically WP:NCTV). Otherwise, propose a unified naming scheme for so-called "OVA's" that is known to a more general audience beyond just anime "enthusiasts". But in this case, "OVA" vs. "TV series" is basically a distinction without a difference, so let's finally move it to "TV series" (with the added benefit of WP:CONSISTENCY with JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (2012 TV series)). --IJBall (contribs • talk) 15:48, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
- Support (film series) as disambiguation. I agree that consistent naming of articles across Wikipedia is important and also see it as a problem that a lot of WikiProjects have their own naimg conventions that don't match up with the larger project (WP:Anime and WP:Comics come to mind), but also disagree with calling something a TV series that was not broadcast on television. Film series is an actually accurate descriptor.--AlexandraIDV 16:42, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
- Reasonable. But because JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (2012 TV series) exists, and there's some confusion because of the whole OVA/film series/TV series issue, it's probably better if this one also includes the year – JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (1993 film series). --IJBall (contribs • talk) 16:59, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
Comment, I can't say I can support the "TV series" title, considering it is an OVA series (which means calling it a TV series would be blatantly incorrect). "Film series" might be appropriate, however I'm unsure of whether or not I'm willing to support something other than "OVA series" (to which such titling already is its own trivial topic). Sarcataclysmal (talk) 01:44, 7 September 2020 (UTC)- Oppose, is what I've decided to go with. The mentioned WP:NCTV argument isn't really convincing to me, if I'm being honest, and is still not correct by definition of what an original video animation is. Such a naming convention just doesn't apply here; and considering the fact that absolutely no one refers to this as a television series, inside or outside of anime circles, there's no sensical reason for it to be considered as such other than consistency with the 2012 series' article. Consistency is one thing, however, and correctness is another. I will agree with Goszei on keeping the status quo. Sarcataclysmal (talk) 07:57, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
- Comment: I'm still suggesting it be named JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (1993 OVA series) since it was made specially for home video release without TV or theater showings. SpectresWrath (talk) 00:39, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
- And "OVA" is still not a valid disambiguator, as nobody has every agreed to it, and nobody outside of anime fans knows what the heck it is. (FTR, "anime" isn't valid either, after an RfC clearly went against using genres as disambiguators.) Alexandra IDV above is correct – if not "TV series", then "film series" needs to be used, as that's a valid disambiguator. --IJBall (contribs • talk) 14:36, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
