I don't have the time to write about this, but Japan had a lot of influence on China in the early 20th century in the area of science. Once Japan decided to modernize and to adopt a lot of Western science and technology, it did so more rapidly than China. Many Chinese intellectuals studied in Japan (including many of the revolutionaries). One result of this was that a lot of scientific terminology was borrowed by Chinese from Japanese, e.g. the word for "cell" in biology. Most of this terminology was constructed in Japan of components previously borrowed from Chinese, so the fact that these are actually loans from Japanese into Chinese is not obvious. I hope that someone with the time and expertise will write about this.Bill (talk) 03:49, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
