Mor Yaqoub Sahada Cross, Pengamuck

[edit]

The Mor Yaqoub Sahada Cross is a historic cross located in Pengamuck, Thrissur, Kerala, India. This sacred site is deeply revered within the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church and holds special significance as it enshrines a relic of Saint James Intercisus (known as Mor Yaqoub M’Pasqo Sahada in Syriac Christianity).

Relic of Saint James Intercisus

The cross is believed to contain a relic of the saint—specifically, a thumb bone of Saint James Intercisus, buried within it. This makes the Mor Yaqoub Sahada Cross a significant place of pilgrimage and veneration for the faithful. Saint James Intercisus was a 5th-century Persian Christian martyr known for his steadfast faith and dramatic martyrdom, during which he was cut into pieces (hence the name "Intercisus"). The presence of his relic in Pengamuck connects the local Syrian Orthodox Christian community to the broader tradition of honoring early Christian martyrs.

A piece of bone from the finger of James the Mutilated (Mor Yaqoub M’Pasqo Sahada) is kept in a golden casket in the holy cross (kurishupalli) dedicated to the saint in the Orthodox Syrian Old Church of St Peter & Paul in Pengamuck, Kerala, India. It was dedicated by Gregorios Geevargese (Parumala Thirumeni) and metropolitan Dionysious Joseph (Pulikkottil II), a native of Pengamuck, who had received the bone at his consecration as metropolitan by the patriarch of Antioch Ignatius Yakoob II. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.70.199.103 (talk) 15:09, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Spiritual Importance

The site is primarily a place for prayers and spiritual reflection. Each year, a 3-day gospel preaching event is held on November 24, 25, and 26, organized under MYM JSOYA Pengamuck. These sessions provide an opportunity for the faithful to deepen their spiritual connection and commemorate the saint's legacy.

Historical and Cultural Context

The Mor Yaqoub Sahada Cross reflects the rich Christian heritage of Kerala, rooted in Syriac traditions. It stands as a testament to the enduring faith of the local Christian community and their connection to the broader history of Christianity in the Middle East and Persia.

Affiliation

The cross and its associated traditions come under the jurisdiction of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church in Pengamuck. The church and its youth organization, MYM JSOYA, are instrumental in preserving the cross and organizing spiritual events. 103.70.199.103 (talk) 14:47, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
