Originated in 1976?

[edit]

"The term was initially applied to Margaret Thatcher[citation needed], nicknamed so in 1976 by the Soviet media for her staunch opposition to communism." - I can confirm that it was indeed used in the USSR in 1976 but I do believe that the term is 1) much older than 1976 and 2) it is not of Russian/Soviet origin. ←Humus sapiens ну? 09:39, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Golda Meir article says that she was known as the Iron Lady before Thatcher was --Leathlaobhair 03:08, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Golda Meir article does not cite its sources.

iron lady
n : British stateswoman; first woman to serve as Prime Minister (born in 1925) [syn: Thatcher, Margaret Thatcher, Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven, Iron Lady]

I believe Princeton University is greater authority than unknown editors of Golada meir article. So it remains to figure out who was first to call her so and when. Mukadderat 18:20, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Update: the Golda Meir article (Allah forgive the contributor) misqoutes BBC News, which said: Golda Meir was the Iron Lady of Israeli politics years before the epithet was coined for Margaret Thatcher., i.e., id did not say she was called so years before; she was so, like many others in our list. Original Iron Lady

[edit]

OK, I think I have found the original Iron Lady. ←Humus sapiens ну? 22:41, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please allow me to respectfully disagree. Your link does not say that she was called so 200 years ago. There is no reason to assume this was nothing more than an occasional journalist's witticism of 1980s, when it was a buzzword. "star of India" + "iron lady" gives a meagre 80 google hits, including Iron Lady Ironing service, Allah is generous :-). Mukadderat 18:20, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Iron Chancellor?

[edit]

Someone added (and I deleted) the unreferenced text:

, and references the nickname of a previous male Chancellor of Germany, Otto von Bismarck("The Iron Chancellor.")

I doubt the Soviet newspaper explained how they coined the word. So it is pure guesswork; removed. Anyway, IMO Soviets knew more about Iron Felix than about Iron Chancellor. Mukadderat 09:40, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What about a link to Iron Duke? Tabletop (talk) 04:43, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Kim Campbell

[edit]

I removed Kim Campbell from this list. I couldn't find a single citation supporting her being here and, having lived through her very short administration, am pretty confident in saying nobody in Canada has ever thought of her as an "Iron Lady." Habfan29 (talk) 16:25, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Golda Meir

[edit]

Golda Meir was called the Iron Lady first. The term of office ended years before Lady Thacter's. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.9.126.190 (talk) 01:25, 23 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thatcher's own self-description

[edit]

One reason why the nickname stuck seems to be that Thatcher herself then used it in a major speech (at a Tory Party conference, I think), a clip of which has often been shown on TV, saying something such as 'Here am I in my pale blue dress and .... , the Iron Lady of the Western World'. Somebody (maybe me, but I don't have the time right now) needs to find the correct citation and add it to the article.Tlhslobus (talk) 17:56, 17 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've now documented this in the article.Tlhslobus (talk) 05:03, 24 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

– Reasonable given the situation with Iron Duke; the term should be redirected to a WP:DAB page rather than a page on the nickname itself. Also, the situation with Teflon (nickname) comes to mind, which is a similar article to Iron Lady as it too lists several persons referenced to with the nickname. It should also be noted that Iron Lady is the top, first link included on Iron Lady (disambiguation) (above Margaret Thatcher) so there is unlikely to be any confusion following such a move. --Neveselbert 20:55, 4 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
