The article is heavily written repetitively and obviously advancing CPU and related articles, its like CPU marketing platform — Preceding unsigned comment added by Count of Iloilo (talk • contribs) 00:33, 10 August 2019 (UTC)
I just dug up a good book with details about Iloilo City's economy circa 1850 up to around 1911, if somebody has time to read up and include some of the information written in it, that would be great. Don't quote the article, by the way - I'm not sure of the copyright status. Just use it to improve the Iloilo City article.

I'll try rewriting this page in a month or two if no one does -- and only then, I'm kind of busy processing papers at the moment, hence the inability to do it myself.
Has anybody noticed or is it just me that finds the Iloilo City article dull and rambling although in prose, it almost is boringly unreadable. I tired of reading after a few paragraphs, I'm pointing particularly at the city's history area.
Great job with the cleanup so far! On the other hand, you need not post the entire parts removed or edited out, just point to the revision history page [[1]], it's already there. Don't forget to use the actual article page and not the Talk:Iloilo City's revision history page. Finally, just post the reason for the edit, or if including it is really important, summarize or use excerpts. :)
For readability, don't include unecessary cruft in the talk page, we have the revision history for that.
@Ady001 I've heard the term "Metro Iloilo" being used in radio, and on some official publications, I'll try searching for them, if you'd like. As always, don't take my word for it, nor on wikipedia itself - double check though, I'm saying this 'cause I don't have the actual evidence. The use however is not commonplace outside government or media, use your own discretion.

I've seen the article of the city of Venice, and a lot, the pattern I used to edit the article of Ciudad de Iloilo/Iloilo City was same as the City of Venice, but not the info box. A22ount (talk) 09:09am, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
Lifestyle section
[edit]I went ahead and removed the "Lifestyle" section. It was poorly written, read like an advertisment, and was too rambling. If anyone considers adding it, give it a _big_ rewrite. Hotdogger 22:18, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Mayor Jerry Trenas Criminal Case
[edit]It is TIME for groups to expose irregularities of Big Fishes. Without fight Iloilo would suffer. Imagine, there is so much poverty in this City, but the Mayor had high time to galivant to Taiwan and of course, these RISE could just sue him for petty RA 6713 violation. --Florentino floro 11:30, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Coal Plant suit against Trenas
[edit]I removed the section about the lawsuit filed against Trenas. It doesn't fit in an generic article about the city. It would be appropriate for an article on the politics of Iloilo or on Mayor Trenas. Here it just strikes me as a political jab.--Bruce Hall 02:42, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Dining
[edit]Obviously to write Bavaria and its facebook is a straightforward advertisement. It is a conflict of interest.
BAVARIA RETSAURANT ILOILO -Our rustic restaurant "BAVARIA", located near the JARO PLAZA, offers typical German, Italian, Spanish and Filipino dishes. Its decoration is inspired by Bavaria, the famous German province, home of the Oktoberfest and the castle of Neuschwanstein built by King Ludwig II. The bar is staffed with a wide range of local and imported drinks, including excellent Weizenbier, Dark beer, Pilsner, and the 8.9 alcohol percent bestseller. Only here can you find Original German and European sausages, pork knuckles and Goulasch dishes and many more. BAVARIA INN is located at the upper floor of the restaurant with air-condioning, hot and cold shower and cable TV rooms. For more information, please visit our facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Bavariarestaurant. THANK YOU!
Iloilo city has a wide selection of restaurants to choose from. There are several native Filipino restaurants, the most notable of which specialize in seafood. Additionally, there are a dozen Chinese, 1 German restaurant called BAVARIA located near the Jaro Plaza in front of the St. Vincent Seminary school, 3 Japanese restaurants (Ohana, suehiro & maki), 2 Korean, 2 American (American Legacy & Freddy's Bar), 1 Austrian (Vienna KafeeHause and restaurant), 2 Thai (Peppy Thai & Krua Thai), 1 Mongolian Restaurant (Kublai Kan's) and 4 Italian restaurants (Alfrique's, Al Dente, Messe, Emilion).
A number of nationally known fastfood and popular food chains also dot the city: Jollibee (8 branches) McDonald's (4 branches) Greenwhich Pizza (2 branches) Chowking (4 branches) Red Ribbon (3 branches) Andok's Manokan (5 branches) Shakey's Pizza (2 branches) Pizza Hut (2 branches) Kentucky Fried Chicken (4 branches) Sbarro Pizza (2 branches) Pancake House

Best Places to Live in the Phillippines?
[edit]The introduction reads Iloilo City recently topped a survey by MoneySense Magazine as one of the "Best Place to Live in the Philippines". But the two footnotes on this sentence do not support this statement. They say nothing about the MoneySense ranking. Also, the only other reference I can find to this ranking is this - http://moneysense.com.ph/editors-note/best-places-to-live/ - which references an article from April 2008. Iloilo City is listed fifth on the list, not at the top of the list. Omc (talk) 15:02, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Jaro Evangelical Church and the Central Philippine University have some historical signicance in Iloilo City and could be conisdered landmarks of the City. However, Doane Baptist Church lacks these qualities, to justify being included in the Cityscape. The "Cityscapre" title should eb replaced with Historical Landmark. Also a specific Mansion is mentioned, which is not as well-known. Other more importance colonial houses should have been included instead. The best way to mention this mansion is to include it as an example of the mansions in Distrito de Jaro. --TLS MMM (talk) 07:44, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
There is no need of a citation for the title "La Muy Leal y Noble Ciudad" since it is already a historical fact. This fact is attestaed also by the seal of the city, the present and the ancient one, both of which carry the title.--TLS MMM (talk) 08:48, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
There was a request for appropriate citation after the phrase "an agricultural experimental station established at La Paz in 1888" in the second paragraph of the introductory part of this article. However, the phrase forms part of a sentence, which already has a proper citation. There is no need to have another citation for the above-mentioned phrase. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TLS MMM (talk • contribs) 08:54, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

Section on Central Philippine University
[edit]The Section on Central Philippine University was shortened. It has a separate article. which could be accessed by clicking the name of the University in that section in this article on Iloilo City. On photos of Iloilo Mission Hospital
[edit]The photo of Iloilo Mission Hospital in the section on American and Japanese Period was removed, since there is also another picture of this institution in the section about Medical Facilties. Having two photos of the same institutions gives a tone of over-emphasizing an institution or the interested group connected to it. This does not give a fair presentation of information regarding the city, and regarding other similar institutions institutions in it, which might be equally or even more significant. It might be good to place the deleted photo in another Wikipedia article, which is solely dedicated to Iloilo Mission Hospital.

Removal of some information in the article
[edit]- Major Investors of Iloilo (diff) - As per WP:CRYSTAL, most of the items in the section clearly fall under product announcements and rumors. Even if there are corresponding sources, I'm inclined to believe these are not especially notable that would warrant inclusion in the article (see Wikipedia:Notability#Common circumstances).
- Initial paragraph in Economy section (diff) - economic might, strategic, excellent, have a major impact, most active - These words inherently introduce bias (see WP:WORDS) and are not neutral (see WP:NPOV). Xeltran (talk) 09:09, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

Include tourism sites outside Iloilo City?
[edit]I removed the lengthy list of tourism sites that are not in Iloilo City. I think that the Iloilo City article should only include information about things in Iloilo City. User:Metro Iloilo Guimaras 888 disagrees, clearly, and reverted my changes without comment. Therefore to avoid an WP:Edit War I seek an explanation a WP:Consensus. Should this article be limited strictly to Iloilo City sites? If there are no comments, than WP:Silence in consent I will revert User:Metro Iloilo Guimaras 888 recently reverts. We need to remember too that Wikipedia is neither a guide nor a directory --Iloilo Wanderer (talk) 13:22, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
- I agree with User:Iloilo Wanderer on this. This article is about the city only. Nearby attractions should be added to the respective LGU's. Alternatively, a comprehensive list may be included in the Metro Iloilo-Guimaras article. -- P 1 9 9 ✉ 17:14, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
- I would not suggest simply moving the lists to another article without editing. After all, Wikipedia is not a place for comprehensive lists. See Wikipedia:NOT, specifically WP:NOTDIRECTORY, which says "Wikipedia is not a directory of everything in the universe that exists or has existed", and WP:NOTGUIDE which says "Notable locations may meet the inclusion criteria, but the resulting articles need not include every tourist attraction, restaurant, hotel or venue, etc. While travel guides for a city will often mention distant attractions, a Wikipedia article for a city should only list those that are actually in the city. If you do wish to help write a travel guide, your contributions would be welcome at our sister project, Wikivoyage." There are other places that have comprehensive list of tourism sites, such as tourism and government websites. We can and should link to those. We should not reproduce their content here. We are an encyclopedia which means to be included material must meet the inclusion criteria. --Iloilo Wanderer (talk) 09:54, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
- With no other comments, it seems that we have reached a WP:Consensus. I will put a second note on User:Metro Iloilo Guimaras 888 page so that he has a change to comment if he wants. I will then remove the non-Iloilo City tourism sites. --Iloilo Wanderer (talk) 01:12, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, User:Metro Iloilo Guimaras 888 has made an edit contrary to the consensus above and has not participated in this conversation, despite repeated invitations. Can anyone entice Metro Iloilo Guimaras 888 to do so? --Iloilo Wanderer (talk) 17:54, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Unsourced travel guide information removed
[edit]Content should be based on independent reliable sources and focus on a succinct summary of the most significant encyclopedic information. It should not include a comprehensive listing of every local business, unless details about significant aspects have been covered in independent reliable sources. These aspects could be added as sourced prose. Also, Wikipedia is not Wikivoyage and does not contain detailed hotel and restaurant information (again except notable cases with independent coverage). Rockefeller image in "American colonial era" - removed
[edit]The recently added image is simply redundant, as the information is already covered in the CPU image caption to the left, and - very detailed - in the main text. The image is primarily decorative, and this specific section is already crammed with several images ("sandwiching" problems of text between images to the left and right). Another image, especially one without unique encyclopedic purpose, just doesn't fit in - and is undue weight for this aspect. I have removed the redundant image once again. Please discuss here. Central Philippine University
[edit]This part of the section on Education was removed due to the fact that the same information is also found in a separate Wikipedia Article on Central Philippine University:
The university ranks number one in Western Visayas region with 2 Commission on Higher Education (Philippines) Centers of Excellence designated programs in Agriculture and Business Administration and 4 Commission on Higher Education (Philippines) Centers of Development designated programs in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, & Teacher Education.[1][2][3][4]
Central Philippine University holds many firsts in the Philippines in some of the units that it established - the CPU Philippine Center for Packaging Engineering and Technology (CPU PC-PET) (first of its kind in South East Asia); Central Philippine University College of Agriculture, Resources and Environmental Sciences (first government recognized agricultural school outside Luzon); Central Philippine University Republic (CPU Republic) (first and oldest organized student government in South East Asia); CPU TV Channel (first university-based TV Channel in Asia); Central Philippine University College of Theology (first Baptist theological seminary in the Philippines); and Iloilo Mission Hospital (the university hospital of the university) (first American and Protestant hospital in the Philippines).
The university enrolls and is widely known to foreign students who wants to study in Panay and Western Visayas with 122 foreign students studying from 15 countries in the world.[5] The university is associated and has produced people who became notable in their respective fields - Perfecto Yasay Jr. (Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines), National Artists Ramon Muzones (for Literature) and Leonor Orosa-Goquingco (for Dance), Leonor Briones (Secretary of Education of the Philippines under President Duterte's administration), Jose Vasquez Aguilar (The first Filipino recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award (Asian equivalent of Nobel Prize) and also first awardee of the said award (Ramon Magsaysay Award) for Government Service category for his work as the "Father of the Community School Movement"), among others."
There seems to be an attempt to overemphasize the figure of this particular University in the section on Education in the Article on Iloilo City, which underrates other institutions. Whatever the intention of the contributor, the attempt gives an impression that the contributor is personally connected with the Central Philippine University. this attempts does not give a true picture of the state of the City's education.

History - The Revolutionary Period (1896)
[edit]"Yet, it was also during this period of Philippine history that Iloilo was more popularly known as the "La Reina Ciudad del Sur" ("Queen City of the South"). This points to the fact that the moniker was associated to the Queen Regent's favor and to the honorary title granted to Iloilo City as Muy Noble Ciudad, due to the loyalty of its citizens to the Spanish Crown.[1]"
__
The above information cites a source that does not support its claim. There is no mention of (1) the city's loyalty to the Spanish Crown, nor (2) the sobriquet La Reina Ciudad del Sur ("Queen City of the South"), in either Spanish or English, in the specified pages (pp. 518, 526) and in the rest of the book.
Information found on pages 518 & 526 in fact gives a lengthy description of the cities of Iloilo (p. 518) and Cebu (p. 526), with that of Iloilo's describing her decline and loss of rank in the precedence of cities, starting off with, "Yloilo [sic], formerly the second port of the Philippines..." and ends with, "Taken as a whole Yloilo still remains one of the most charmless spots in the Archipelago." Either this source was a misplacement from the preceding paragraph, or a deliberate deception to lend legitimacy to the city's stake for the "Queen City" moniker which has been a subject of historical rivalry with Cebu. This should be subject for edit or deletion.

Etymology
[edit]This is an academic source. The tree was scientifically described in the 1800s, but it has always been known as iloilo in the local dialects since pre-colonial times. As the book mentions, many place names in the Philippines are derived from the dominant plant life in the area. Most of them are pre-colonial names, like Naga, Camarines Sur or Iba, Zambales.
This is a wiki, and is not a reliable source. Neither are other folk etymologies from various websites (even government ones), including WP:CIRCULAR sources that were sourced from this Wikipedia page.
The word for nose in Hiligaynon is "ilong", not "irong". Neither the river nor the island in Batiano were ever called "irong-irong" (the island is called Katalman, "a pointed thing"). And I'm really tired of people always claiming that Filipino place names originate from foreign traders (Chinese, Tamil, Malay, Spanish, whatever) mispronouncing something or a story about a "hilarious" misunderstanding. That's one of the easiest way to tell that something is folk etymology. As if our ancestors didn't name our places until foreigners arrived, or that they couldn't communicate with foreigners. Even Pigafetta had no problems learning the names of places when they first arrived (and the names are clearly correct even today - Zamal/Samar, Mazaua/Limasawa, Zuluan/Suluan, Calagan/Caraga, Butuan, Zubu/Cebu, Humunu/Homonhon, etc.).-- OBSIDIAN†SOUL 16:12, 16 April 2022 (UTC)
- On further research, I found this much older source from 1841. Which does identify that the name "Iloilo" is derived from "Ilong ilong". However, unlike the previous entry here, it specifies that "Ilong ilong"/"Iloilo" was the name of the point next to Jaro where the Fort San Pedro is located. No Chinese people involved, no irong irong. I'll make the changes.-- OBSIDIAN†SOUL 17:28, 16 April 2022 (UTC)

History - Conversion to Cityhood
[edit]Not only is the paragraph below written rambling, it is also full of factoids that has been spreading around online for quite some time. The first statement in bold is a baseless conclusion drawn without verification. Cebu was declared a City by Philip II in 1594 (here) thus making it second 'official' or 'royal' city in the colony after Manila. Vigan was also declared a city in 1758 by Ferdinand VI. (here). In fact, Iloilo may even be the last to be granted city status during Spanish colonisation.
"Iloilo was raised from the status of a town to a city through a Royal Decree, and on 7 January 1890, the city government was established thru an inauguration headed by then Spanish Governor-General Valeriano Weyler, and Iloilo became the second Royal City in the Philippines in the Spanish East Indies, after Manila."
Also, is the concept of a 'royal city' a necessary distinction? Examples of city status declarations of cities in Spain and its empire found in the Spanish Archives show that the title of 'City' is in the monarch's gift; yet to see proof of other means to acquire city status. This is a custom that is still in practice in other European states i.e. the United Kingdom.
"In 1893, the royal Spanish decree was ratified through a 2nd (legal) declaration by the virtue of Bacura/Becerra Law."
First off, there is no such thing as 'Bacura'. 'Becerra' is the name of the Overseas Minister, Manuel Becerra Bermúdez, in whose ministry the royal decree was issued. The so-called Becerra Law was issued in 1889 not 1893, and the purpose of which was to grant declared cities in their Asian colony to form municipal corporations or municipalities (ayuntamientos), NOT TO RATIFY declared cities. Hence Iloilo was able to establish its Ayuntamiento in 1890, together with Cebu. What was decreed in 1893 was the Maura Law (named after Antonio Maura Montaner), detailing the operation of these municipal corporations.
I have made the necessary corrections.
