List of Emperors

Could someone complete the thankless job of actually confirming whether the emperors listed on the page were born in Illyricum or the Balkans in general? I cannot confirm where Hostilian and Valentinian II were born, and I am considering deleting them from the page. PrehistoricWalker (talk) 15:09, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the emperors on the page include the Roman emperors who were partially or fully Illyrian origin or born in the province of Illyricum.
As far as I remember, Hostilian and Valentinian II were of partial or full Illyrian origin.

PrehistoricWalker Hostilian is usually included among the Illyrian emperors because he was a son of Trajan Decius and Valentinian II may be included as a son of Valentinian. Alexandros17 the definition of Illyrian Emperors includes Illyrian origin, but not all emperors born in Illyricum are considered Illyrian emperors because not all of them are discussed as having fully or partly Illyrian origin. You added Marcian among them, but Marcian is very rarely included among Illyrian emperors.--Maleschreiber (talk) 23:15, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Maleschreiber Yes, you are mostly right in your words. Illyrian emperors also included Illyrian ethnicity, but not every Illyrian emperor was fully Illyrian; because, as far as we know, some Italian tribes settled in Illyria during or after the Illyro-Roman wars, and they were either considered Illyro-Roman or fully Roman. Among those considered Illyro-Roman is Justinian I, and he is often included among the Illyrian emperors. Alexandros17 (talk) 15:14, 14 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This is erroneous. Illyrian here refers to the prefecture of Illyricum, not to the Illyrians. It's a geographical indicative, pretty much like Scythian. A Caliniuc (talk) 20:28, 14 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Puzzled at the word modern – wasn't it always in the western Balkans? – I clicked and learned that "Western Balkans" is a political neologism, which happens to be both obscure and irrelevant here. @Tamfang: "the Balkans" is a neologism as well. It didn't exist before the 18th century and only in the 19th century did it come to refer to the core parts of region we today call "the Balkans". --Maleschreiber (talk) 20:37, 23 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
