Problems with infobox

[edit]

I am having problems with the infobox.

  • The most important problem seems to be |SCOTUS=1975-1981 ? After that there is a huge repetitive error message where it should show the SCOTUS membership.
  • I am not sure how much if any of the |Holding I should fill in. If any, how do I reference it?
  • I am not sure how to fill in |LawsAppliedOceanflynn (talk) 16:06, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

{{Infobox SCOTUS case |Litigants=Hutto v. Finney |FullName=Terrell Don Hutto, et al. v. Robert Finney, et al. |Docket=76-1660 |OralArgument=February 21, 1978<ref name="oyez76600">{{cite web |url=https://www.oyez.org/cases/1977/76-1660 |title=Hutto v Finney}}</ref> |OpinionAnnouncement=June 23, 1978<ref name="oyez76600"/> |Prior=Finney v. Hutto (1977) |USVol=437 |USPage=678 | Holding = |SCOTUS=1975-1981 |Majority =Stevens | JoinMajority = Burger, Stewart, Marshall, Powell | Concurrence = Burger | Concurrence2 = Stewart | Concurrence3 = Marshall | Concurrence4 = Powell | Dissent = Brennan | Dissent2 = White | Dissent3 = Blackmun | Dissent4 = Rehnquist |LawsApplied= }}

Firstly, the problem is not |SCOTUS= but |OralArgument= and |OpinionAnnouncement=. Those parameters expect the URL of the relevant file on Oyez. According to the template page, the URL should be something like |OralArgument=http://www.oyez.org/cases/YYYY-YYYY/YYYY/YY-Docket/argument/. The parameters for the dates are |ArgueDate=, |ArgueYear= and so on.
Regarding the holding, find a secondary source that gives a short explanation of what the court held, summarize that in your own words, and cite the source. Maybe law journal articles or textbooks discuss this case? For the length I'd look at similar articles and see what they do.
Similarly I'd look for secondary sources that explain what laws were applied in this decision. If the question is how to format it, I just took a look at another Supreme Court case and found this snippet of code: {{usc|28|1332}}. That gives: 28 U.S.C. § 1332 I'd use something like that if possible. Huon (talk) 21:56, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Huon.
Holding:I removed the Holding for now. {{ordered list |style=text-align: left; |1= |2= |3= }}

Reliable sources

[edit]

Thanks so much for your edits lethargilistic. I appreciate your expertise. Is http://law.jrank.org, as in this "Hutto v. Finney - The Violations Continue" a reliable source? Thanks.Oceanflynn (talk) 03:14, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I couldn't find authorship information or any evidence of editorial oversight there. They say their content "is from high-quality, licensed material originally published in print form", but not where it was originally published, so we can't cite the original (nor check whether such an original really exists, and since many of their articles are about topics such as "how to find a lawyer in Chicago", I'd be really interested in what "high-quality" print publication published that). So I wouldn't call that reliable. Huon (talk) 13:07, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
