Requested move

[edit]
The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: No Consensus to move, current title is not inconsistent with guidelines. Further discussion on applying consistent to storm titles should take place on project pages. Mike Cline (talk) 20:56, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hurricane RinaHurricane Rina (2011) – Hurricane names are supposed to be disambiguated by year unless they are retired. As of now, it is unclear about Rina's future so the title needs to be disambiguated in case the storm is not retired and the name is used again. Dough4872 23:24, 26 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nah, it's not needed. Right now Rina is the only storm of that name. If it's used again, then we can move this one. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:25, 26 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
But then why is Hurricane Katia disambiguated if it is the only storm to have used that name? Dough4872 23:26, 26 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There is a slight discrepancy, possibly because Katia is more likely to be used (due to being earlier in the alphabet). However, articles do not need to be disambiguated if there aren't more than one of them. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:29, 26 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I looked at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Tropical_cyclones/Style and it says "For storms that were retired, no parenthetical disambiguation is required (Hurricane Katrina); for storms that were not removed from the annual name lists, a parenthetical disambiguation is used (Hurricane Nora (1997)). If the storm is the only occurrence of a particular name (Hurricane Gracie), the year is sometimes left off." So in Rina's case, it seems optional as to whether the year needs to be included. So, in that sense, the article's title is acutally fine where it is. However, we should still see what others think. If the majority agree to no move, then this title can stay as is. Dough4872 23:38, 26 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not per this. Based on that move, I agree that this should be moved. YE Pacific Hurricane
Based on that no-move decision, you mean? But Talk:Tropical Storm Sebastien (1995)#Requested move was closed as no consensus with the closing admin commenting It may be better to look at the names individually to assure their uniqueness one-by-one, rather than en masse. So that decision sets no precedent. Andrewa (talk) 06:21, 3 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Hurricanehink...This is the first time the storm name has been used, and unless it is used again, it should stay at its current page. In the event that the name is used again, we will move the page then...No big deal really. TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk) 23:49, 26 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Comment - I agree with Rye998 if Rina isn't moved to Hurricane Rina (2011) then we would have to go back through all of the articles that have storms that have been used once and change them. I think it would be less work if we just turn Hurricane Rina into Hurricane Rina (2011). STO12 —Preceding undated comment added 00:18, 2 November 2011 (UTC).[reply]

Comment - I mentioned this earlier on the seasonal talk page(not looged in) that if Rina is at the main article, should Richard and Shary of last year be moved back? They follow the same league as Rina. I would support the move, but per WP:DISAMBIGUATION#Usage guidelines, if there is only one topic of ANYTHING, it doesn't need some parenthesis disambiguator. Yes it is more likely Katia will be reused in 2017, but until then, there's no harm in removing the year. Per project policy, a storm only gets the main article if it's retired, if it's the only one (storms like King of 1950, along with Rina and Katia, ect), or if it's clearly the primary topic. Since there are other articles with this kind of issue, could this possibly be moved to the project talk page? Rye998 (talk) 00:57, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I strongly support moving it to Hurricane Rina (2011). It has done NOTHING on land yet. We can't even come close to speculating on land impacts. CrazyC83 (talk) 01:01, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Why does it need the year? Check the usage guidelines as per above. There is no need for it. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:02, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I was just questioning the name of other articles in the same league as Rina, Like Paula, Katia, Richard, and Shary. Katia is earlier in the alphabet and is more likely to be reused than Rina, but still it's the only storm of it's name, so why bother including the year when the one and only Katia is the 2011 Katia? Or the one and only Paula, Richard, or Shary are the 2010 storms? I don't think this type of debate should just go for this article, but rather for every article like this on the project talk page. Rye998 (talk) 01:10, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

We can move the others. The only reason Sebastien failed is because there were too many articles there. Therefore, a storm-by-storm basis isn't a bad option. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:15, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Comment - when I created the page, I thought it was consensus not to create a page with the year added after it unless there were also other storms that had used that name. If that was incorrect, please let me know and I'll add the date to any pages I create after this for cases similar to this one. That one being said, I personally don't object to the move - I'm just unclear what the consensus is in the project. Inks.LWC (talk) 20:32, 4 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Comment:The problem with making this "requested move" is that there are several storms that would need to be moved. Also it would be confusing for readers due to the fact that a storm without a name means that it is retired. Hurricane Igor would be a very confusing article because it was used once and it's retired, the reader wouldn't be able to tell if it was used once, or it was retired, I think that this "requested move" needs to be more thought out before it happens. STO12 —Preceding undated comment added 23:08, 4 November 2011 (UTC).[reply]

Not at all. This request is only for Rina. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:24, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't matter if it was notable or not; if there is any one topic with no other topic to confuse with it, there is no need for the (year) or other disambiguator since it's highly unlikely readers will be looking for anything else. The number of page views an article gets doesn't have anything to do with whether or not it shouldn't have the main article because it's the only one in the first place. Read the usage guidelines I mentioned above. Hurricane Rina might have not been a very notable event overall, but since there is no other "Hurricane Rina" to be confused with, there is no need to have the year until 2017, when there is another Hurricane Rina, and there is no gurantee that season will reach the "R" name. It's not very common to do that. There is no gurantee names used once will be used again because anything could happen between then(the naming lists might change for reasons other than retirement, ect). True, not everyone knows the rules about naming articles, so we can try our best to inform them of naming guidelines. Rye998 (talk) 02:43, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Suggested move

[edit]

As 2017’s TS Rina is expected to be active in the next coming days, I suggest moving this page to Hurricane Rina (2011), and creating a “Tropical Storm Rina” disabugation page. EBGamingWiki (talk) 12:30, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As of right now, this is still the only "Hurricane Rina". YE Pacific Hurricane 14:49, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
2017’s Rina isn’t expected to be a hurricane so no move is needed unless it becomes one. --MarioProtIV (talk/contribs) 15:05, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
