Locations of Caves
[edit]Some wikipedia pages show lat/long coordinates for places. This would not be a good idea for caves, and specifically the Horse Lava Tube System, as most of the caves are on private property. Most, if not all, of the owners of the caves would not like people dropping by to check on their caves. Please, no coordinates! Leitmotiv (talk) 00:07, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
Coordinates needed
[edit]Leitmotiv recently removed the "coordinates needed" template from this article, apparently believing that it is not possible to locate this system on a map. that is ludicrous. However, from the above section, and his comments elsewhere, it would appear that he is in fact PoV pushing. The template should be returned, until such time that coordinates are added. - How bout we wait until the discussion at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2011 November 22 is resolved. Until then, posting personal information for private owner's disrupts privacy concerns for landowners. Leitmotiv (talk) 22:49, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
- The "coordinates needed" template, and indeed coordinates themselves, are not "personal information", nor are they private. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:27, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
- Ok that's fair. Although, I would disagree with you coordinates being not personal. It could be proven in a court of law (at least in some countries with expensive lawyers) that it's very similar to a phone number or personal address, Wikipedia and it's policy be damned. Especially if it targets your private property. But you will probably disagree, seeing as how they are only numbers. True, just numbers, much like your phone number and my social security number. But when the coordinates look to be filled, which is the point of having that parameter inserted Pigsonthewing, it will be heavily scrutinized. Leitmotiv (talk) 19:23, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
- "Wikipedia and it's [sic] policy be damned" - thank you for making your position clear. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:46, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah that position! :) Hey, you know Wikipedia is so flawless and perfect incarnate. We both know better than that. Cavers are working on a proposal for Wikipedia. Hopefully, there can be some exceptions made for U.S. Caves regarding coordinates. What do you think? Any pointers? You are an admin of sorts, aren't you?
